The property in in a great location…with quick access to the beach. We found the staff friendly and engaging.. and quick to help out . The hotel responded in a friendly and helpful manner when we were given a much smaller room than the one we had booked. They immediately corrected the problem by relocating us to a better one. The best thing about this property is the off site restaurant that serves the included breakfast. This beach front location is right across from the hotel and serves great food and the staff is attentive and friendly. We ate 4 different meals there and all were excellent. If you are looking for a hotel with a ‘surfer’s vibe, this property provides a party atmosphere around the large inner courtyard with 2 pools and many areas to relax in comfort.

A sweet, unpolished beach town. There are no huge multinational hotels on the beach, just low-rise local hotels and apartments. The strip along the beach feels relaxed, calm and slightly down-at-heel. It's easy to explore on foot. As two solo women travellers, we felt safe throughout our stay, though we didn't leave the tourist area. The beach itself is huge and very long, with incredible surf waves. There is a small beach area at the north end where it's possible to swim, but the waves are still quite big, especially for children. There are lifeguards all along the beach. There are nice restaurants right on the beachfront, all serving the same simple food. We only stayed two nights - I think at least four nights are needed to really relax and get used to the pace of life here. There are also several excursions nearby which would have been fun if we'd had more time!

A huge long beach, Zicatela is a lovely place but will change very soon with all the development and construction going on.
Already lots of bars, restaurants, shops and hotels, but still relatively chilled at the moment.
Beware of what you carry, police search anyone they can on the beach to extort money!!

Even if a relatively small town the neighbourhoods are very different; Centro where the hotel is, more local people, Bacocho (a bit more hipster was my impression), Zicatela the touristic part with a lovely beach and Brisas de Zicatela where its mostly backpackers and surfers (its just off Punta Zicatela where the best waves are)

It grew on me. I didn't love it at first.
It grew on me. I didn't love it at first. I think its more suited to younger people than people in their mid 40s + who have already done the backpacking thing. Also I live on a beautiful beach in Australia so it's hard to be impressed by grey sand of Zacatelas beach.. However Carrizalillo beach was beautiful. I recommend visiting that beach while you are there.
I felt like a bit of a sellout as Puerto is not the real mexico, there are more Australians and Americans there than Mexicans it seems. So if you want an authentic Mexican experience you should go to Puebla or Mexico city, but if your looking for a chilled vibe on the beach then you will probably like Puerto.
You'll find better food in other parts of the country also - Oaxaca city, Meixco city, Puebla etc.
It's very hot there. but there's nothing much else to do than hang at the beach.

Overall was great trip.
Overall was great trip. The town feels more international compared to other places I’ve visited in mexico, it lacks that authentic Mexican feeling. The hotel was great, tucked away from the Main Street, very peaceful.

Best falafels and hummus et El Sultan on the Rinconada.
Best falafels and hummus et El Sultan on the Rinconada. Best whole bean coffee as well as cappuccino and cookies at Binisa Cafe. As expats living in San Agustinillo, an hour away, we find things in Puerto that we cannot find in San Agustinillo, Mazunte, or Zipolite. We found some really excellent sharp cheddar cheese at Super 69 grocery on the Rinconada, cans of white meat whole tuna packed in water also at Super 69, bought beautiful Talavera tile for our bathroom at the Talavera store on the Rinconada, and picked up health food products like chia at one of the many small health food stores in Puerto that sell bulk goods.

This is not a luxury hotel but it is very well designed so that you have everything you need and are very comfortable. For example, the aircon is quiet and effective, there are spaces to sit and relax, there is a kitchen to making drinks and snacks (with a fridge full of water, beer and soft drinks available to purchase through an honesty system), there are screens on the windows, the pool area is clean and nicely planted. We really enjoyed it.
We liked how spacious the place was, starlink internet, the rooms had fans and AC, kitchen was big and fully equipped. Compared to other hostels, this felt on the higher end side. Good if you are working remotely.
It was at a 20min ish walk to the beach, it’s an alright walk. Additionally, unlike the majority of hostels we’ve been in Mexico, no noises at night from dogs, roosters or neighbors which was actually very relaxing.
Booked a nights stay on a whim and I was pleasantly surprised. Actually wished I stayed a bit longer, booking included breakfast. I haven’t been getting on well with the food in Mexico and everything I ate at villa bonobo was amazing. Staff are lovely especially Sorrel she goes above and beyond and really understands what exceptional customer service is! Well done team keep it up! I really lucked out with this booking!
Definitely the rooftop terrace with an amazing view! The host Steph was very helpful, gave us a good recommendation of an authentic local taco place with the most spicy salsas we had in all of Mexico. Wifi was strong and reliable. Also the place somehow attracts guests with a very laid back vibe. The neighbourhood is not touristy, we enjoyed that. The colectivo to Puerto is running regularly from closeby.
It’s surprisingly quiet. My room was really close to the pool. In 3 days, I’ve never see a party. Guests were really respectful.
You will meet a lot of people from everywhere in the world in that pool. And thrust me! You will be happy to have it. PXM is fuckin’ hot!
A/C was perfect.
Wifi works well in “Mexico standard”
The room have a fridge. Big advantage. You will drink cold water and beer!
Our stay at Hotel Santa Fe was very nice. Rooms are comfortable, clean and with all the amenities. The beds could be a little more cushy, for the price you pay for the rooms, but I think this is the most common complaint, all around, when travelling in Mexico. The staff are very nice and very attentive and the location is very convenient and with lovely views of Zicatella beach, great for sunsets!
this property is gorgeous and in such a good condition. The staff and the owner are amazing people, so friendly and helpful. The offered sport activities are great and absolutely affordable. You can book many activities with the staff since they are well connected. I loved the pool area and in general the open minded vibe of this place. my best stay within 6 weeks in Mexico.
This was my favorite stay in Mexico. i had the private room. I spent over double on other boutique hotels but they didn’t compare in value. very clean, housekeeping every day. ac amazing. staff very helpful and speaks English. has a kitchen & common area where you can meet others. can walk to 3 beaches, chedraui, zicatela or riconada. near bus & transport depots.
The location was great for the beach and restaurants. The young man running it, Carlos is a wonderful person, nothing is too much trouble and his English is brilliant. The room was very clean and there was a cooker, fridge and a coffee machine too. Which is unusual on my travels in Mexico. Most places don't even have a fridge. I would definitely stay there again
I loved this hostel so much. It was my favourite from my time in Mexico. It's really social but also has a kind of family vibe in the sense that you get to know lots of the other travellers staying there. Big shout out to the volunteers, and especially Fidel, for creating such a greate atmosphere. #Sorryball2022
the room was great, with a straight view from the balcony to the ocean. however being so close to the bars and clubs it was quite loud at night from thursday to sunday. the pool is gorgeous and always at perfect tempature. although very little staff spoke english, we were in mexico so it's expected!
The swimingpool is a need because of the heat and it‘s good. The hotel is simple, old but perfect for what we were looking for and for what we paid for. Not luxury at all but it‘s perfect, location too. The beds were big (2 double beds) and very confy (first time in mexico I slept all night long!)
I was absolutely in love with Hotel Gallo del Mar. It was such a serene and relaxing stay, tucked away but right next to the main road of Punta Zicatela.
The two ladies at reception were incredibly helpful and welcoming. Would recommend to anyone staying in Puerto Escondido!
Best location - short walking distance from the beach, shopping mall and many small shops, ATMs, and bus station. The hotel is clean, quiet and has everything needed, incuding hot shower, which is luxury in this part of the world.
We stayed just for one night (returning from chacahua and next day traveling to Oaxaca). Choose this hotel because of good value for money and it's location. For a longer stay I would book an accommodation at zicatela.
