FAQs about hotels in Tokyo

See It to Believe It!

The capital of Japan, Tokyo is a vast, teeming metropolis nestled between mountains and Tokyo Bay. It’s so huge that you’ll have to come to grips with public transport and maybe even experience being pushed onto a train. Yes, it does actually happen!

Get your bearings by ascending the Tokyo World Trade Centre near the waterfront, and savour the fantastic views taking in the red-and-white Tokyo Tower and Shinkuju’s skyscrapers. North is Ueno, home to the best museums (including the Tokyo National Museum) and a large park bursting with cherry blossom in spring.

Equally tranquil are the Chiyoda Imperial Palace and Gardens, surrounded by water. Also in gardens is the Meiji Jingu Shinto shrine in Shibuya, a youthful district where neon abounds.

For more traditional Japanese culture, head to Asakusa whose Sensō-ji Buddhist temple is Tokyo’s oldest temple. Markets in the grounds sell a variety of wares, though shopping in Tokyo is, of course, fantastic wherever you go.

Whether you stay in a Japanese ryokan, luxury Tokyo hotel or a hostel, don’t fly out of Tokyo Narita Airport or Haneda Airport without having tried sushi. Another Japanese institution is the sento (public bath) and onsen (hot springs bath) – a must try. Also incredibly popular are Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, Asia’s 2 most visited theme parks.

As expected Tokyo was super clean and relatively quiet for such a big city. It is huge and I only saw two parts of it Askusa and Ueno. Lots of great restaurants and the food was very reasonably priced.

Tokyo is great if you check what transit lines are near you.

Tokyo is great if you check what transit lines are near you. The biggest waste of our time was trying to get between places. We made sure to avoid the peak rush times in the transport system, but it still took forever to get anywhere. Pre-planning where you will likely eat is a huge time saver. Look at Google and filter for restaurants in your radius and set the budget. This is helpful for weeding out restaurants that you will be disapointed getting to and realising you don't want to pay that much. 7-Eleven is your friend for drinks, snacks, ice creams and money changing. Don't bother with Travellex - 7-Eleven ATMS have better transfer rates. If you find yourself with a bunch of change at the end, go to 7-Eleven and dump it in their cash register to give you back the least amount. Then spend it on an Ice Cream! If you are going in Septemeber, don't get tricked - it is HOT! We needed to invest in neck fans, umbrellas and ice fans. Copy what the locals do. September is also Typhoon season, so be aware that your plans may change quickly. Have back up plans! Make sure to download the Rain alarm app. Book ahead for any activity you can. Some things you can't book until you are in the country, but make sure that you do everything in your power!

Sunroute Plaza is what we expected with regards to room size, it couldn't possibly have been smaller, then again TIT (This Is Tokyo). A bit disappointed that there was no safety box and that the restaurant, which was only sometimes open, charged extortionate prices: 30 bucks pp for breakfast, halo!! But the most disappointing issue was the theft of one of my wife's dresses and one of my beloved shirts which we discovered on our return. And, no, we did not forget to pack them, the size of the room makes it impossible to forget anything. Won't be going there again unless they solve the sticky fingers problem.

Lovely clean and vibrant hotel in a quiet area just out of Shinjuku. As first time travellers to Tokyo it was a nice calm base to return to each day. Delicious on site bakery which included vegan options for those requiring. Younger clientele but not backpacker. Lovely park opposite with Starbucks. 5 minute walk to local train (Tochomae) which was 1 stop from Shinjuku station. A5 is the closest exit - took us a while to figure out. Easy commute to all areas of the city. Some local restaurants and convenience stores nearby.

Great location, it's a short 5-10min walk from Shibuya JR Station and the subway. A lot of shops and food options within the Miyashita Park complex, plus always something interesting happening at the park itself. Great cafe inside the hotel. Rooms are modern, comfortable beds and clean. Great to have a park view as well. The staff were also very attentive and friendly, and assisted whenever we needed help.

Perfect location, 1 min walk to Oedo line Higashi Shinjuku, 12 min walk to JR Shinjuku, can easily get to anywhere by train or bus. Also, the room is quite clean. Even besides a main road in downtown, the inside is quiet once the door is closed. The queen bed is soft. I booked this room for my family to stay. They are satisfied with the fully equipped desgin. The hotel provide every utensils needed.
