The location of the hotel is fairly close to the train station. Easy walk, or take a bus for a stop. 7/11 across the street is nice. Pretty close to the bars in the city. The breakfast was quite acceptable. It was included with the room charge. The breakfast room was a little small, but this kept the buffet from being too big.

While Nagano is best known outside Japan as a Winter...
While Nagano is best known outside Japan as a Winter Olympics host city and a favourite place for people to ski in Winter, it is also the site of the Zenkō-ji Temple.
As one of the most important Buddhist sites in Japan it is extensive and beautifully landscaped. Despite the large number of visitors we felt calmed each of the times we walked through the grounds. You can also purchase a ticket (¥1,200) to climb the Niōmon Gate, visit the main Hondo and walk through the dark tunnel, turn the giant storehouse that contains a complete set of sutras, and see the museum in the war memorial pagoda at the rear of the complex.
Nagano itself is a nice prefectural capital surrounded by forested mountains. In the good late autumn weather it was beautiful and we enjoyed wandering the small streets finding little restaurants and stores, and looking at the interesting mix of old and very new architecture.
We didn't visit any of the popular museums and galleries as after almost 4 weeks in Japan we were "museumed out", but did stumble across the Nishinomon-Yoshinoya Sake Brewery which is well worth a visit, and had lunch at Unaginoyado Sumiyoshi - a well-regarded unagi restaurant.
There are also lots of scenic and nature locations to visit in the surrounding hills, but you need more time than we had to enjoy them.
Overall, Nagano was a bit of a surprise package and being just 1½ hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen I would recommend a visit as part of any Japan itinerary.

Handly location to use as a base for surrounding areas like Matsumoto and Obuse. Just be aware the train to Obuse is not on the JR or the IC/Suica/Pasmo and you'd need cash to buy the ticket.

Many different activities available in the area - cultural, historical, and natural. The Togakushi Shrine Pilgrimage and Kamikochi National Park were my favorites. Excellent souvenir shopping on the street in front of Zenkoji Temple. The city is very walkable. The train from Tokyo provides easy access. During hot summer months it is cooler in Nagano.
Conveniently located across from the Zenjoki entrance/exit of Nagano Station, the hotel has a Family Mart attached to the building as well as a restaurant. Around the corner, you'll find several other restaurants and izakaya to fulfill whatever cravings you may have. The bed was comfortable although the pillows were a bit thin. The staff were all super friendly and accommodating.
The lobby included a shampoo bar offering various types of shampoo for you to use instead of the standard shampoo that was in the room.
We had a fantastic time at 1166 Backpacker.
- Location: It is perfectly located to explore the city (the famous Zenkoji Temple is a 5-minute walk away) and is also a 20-minute walk from the train station.
- This is a traditional Japanese house with futon beds, super comfy, we had our best sleep in Japan there.
- The team was super kind and friendly, and we enjoyed chatting with them.
Merci Etsuko, c'était un plaisir de parler avec toi :)
The kindest host, Maki-san. The most delicious food I have had in Japan. Lovely ryokan home. Incredible hospitality. Just 10 out of 10. The Togakushi shrines are right nearby. Seriously, the food alone and the relaxing Onsen were so delightful. Thank you, Maki-san. (For non-Japanese, be sure to understand a little about how ryokan works and what the traditional inn is like. But Maki-san will teach you all you need to know!
This is a clean and comfortable place to stay right near Nagano city train station .
The eating options in the area are good and it is a pleasant walk to the Zenkoji temple from the hotel .
I only stayed for one night but after over two weeks of straying in traditional Japanese guesthouses staying one night in a western style hotel with a Japanese breakfast included was highly satisfactory .
The hotel is right opposite to the train station, and from my window, I can see long-distance buses waiting at bus stops to pick up travellers going to Habuka (ski resorts) and Kamikochi (mountain highland for trekking).
The room (at 8th floor) is generally quiet throughout the whole night.
You can have a spa bath at level 2.
Next to the hotel is a 7-11 that opens 24h.
Perfect ryokan in remote Japan. The experience was beyond expectations. The shrines in the area are superb! Everything was perfect and the hostess was very helpful. The food is amazing (but there's too much!)! The ryokan can be easily access by car from Nagano. It is a 35min scenic drive. I suggest nissan-rent-a-car right next to the train station. Everything went smoothly.
- Beautiful ryokan in a perfect location to explore Nagano, directly next to Zenkoji Temple and easy to get to Nagano Station by bus or walking
- Spacious rooms with beautiful traditional decor and well equipped with comfortable beds, nice bathroom and good heating
- Friendly and attentive staff that are very helpful
- Delicious Japanese-style breakfast
This is the best imaginable place to stay in Nagano. Perfectly located between the train station and the famous Zenkoji. Japanese style rooms in a authentic hotel, with a common hot bath. Travelling as a family with a 1-year-old, we were very happy that the charming owners gave us one of the baths for family use. Next time we will eat dinner there, too!
Location - just few mins walk from Nagano Train station and right next to a department store
Room - bigger than normal Japan business hotel
Staff - friendly and speaks English
Checkin / checkout - smooth and automatic. Even have free drink when checkin
Breakfast - my price includes breakfast and it has quite a big variety with such a bargain price
Good sized room by Japanese standards, comfortable bed and great location right at the station. There are lots of delicious quick food options and a bar in the food court below the hotel. The Zenkoji Temple is within walking distance or a short bus ride away. Loved being able to access the station so easily to catch the Shinkansen Bullet train
Superb hotel ! Value for the money. Location is near to Nagano Station hence we walked to the hotel. The open air onsen at roof top is really cool. You will surely like it. Also, after 9:30 pm they provide free ramen noodles with limited portion if you missed to have dinner. Overall experience was really nice !
A one-of-a-kind Ryokan with kind owners and in a great location. Lots of wonderful restaurants nearby. Bus stop for Nagano Station is near the entrance. Hangout in the lobby or sit on the sidewalk bench in front of the building to experience the culture of the Zenkoji pilgrams and Nagano's city life.
Hotel is just a little walk away from train station. You can walk to temple and restaurant from there. Hotel provides a lot of amenities like tooth brush, shavor, face masks, shampoo, selection of different pillows etc.
Rooms are not too spacious but big enough to open a big suitcase.
The staff were extremely kind and helpful. They helped store my luggage before my check in window and when I checked in and when to my room, the luggage was already there! It's very close to the station and easy to find. The room is a little bigger than the average hotel rooms in Japan.
Good location!! Very close to the train station and Zenkoji temple, the main attraction of Nagano city. There is a big supermarket next to the hostel which runs 24 hours. The bathroom was super clean so it was very comfortable to use.
Good location close to station. Typical Japanese hotel with all the usual amenities. Room was very compact but ok for one night. The breakfast was excellent with a good mix of Japanese and Western foods available.
Good location, many nice and affordable restaurants around. The hotel is right in front of the Nagano Train station. Complete set of amenities, love the skincare kit provided.
Hotel is less than 10 minutes walk from the train station. They let us leave our bags as we arrived at 10a.m. Check-in and check-out were easy and the staff were efficient.
