FAQs about hotels in Alghero

Sardinia’s Catalan Gem

The walled town of Alghero on Sardinia’s west coast has an altogether more down-to-earth vibe than the more exclusive Emerald Coast on the opposite side of the island. In fact, it feels more Catalan than Italian.

The seafront walls and defensive towers surrounding the historic centre were actually built by the Catalans in the 16th century, and many residents still speak a dialect from that era. However, Sardinia has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the Nuraghe di Palmavera stone dwellings outside the town are evidence of this. Another nuraghic site is Anghelu Ruju, near Alghero Fertilia Airport.

South of the airport is sandy Maria Pia Beach which continues all the way to Alghero harbour and is lined with beachfront hotels, bars and restaurants offering tasty seafood, including local lobster. Boat trips leave the harbour to Neptune’s Grotto along the coast. Next door is Nereo Cave, supposedly the largest Mediterranean sea cave and a popular diving spot.

Also worth visiting are the pedestrian streets of the old town, packed with shops and pavement cafés. Also here are 16th-century Palazzo d’Albis and the cathedral with its mixed architectural styles.

The Alghero accommodation on Booking.com includes 5-star hotels with pools, cheap B&Bs and apartments with parking.

Fabulous place which exceeded our expectations.

Fabulous place which exceeded our expectations. Safe, plenty to do and lots of good places to eat. I would recommend hiring a car. We did from 'Casual Van'. It was great to see the surrounding coast. Really stunning scenery. Would recommend Regina Margherita and La Bottega for meals and Jo'pier. We got to and from the airport by taxi which we pre booked.

Lovely, charming, walkable little city that makes you feel like you're on holiday but it doesn't feel like a tourist toytown. We were there in mid October so it may well be much busier in the summer, but it was not at all crowded and was one of loveliest holidays we've had. Good food, everything is walkable, excellent city and a boat trip to the grottos.

Litter appalling. Waste bins not emptied and rubbish out on streets for days. Foothpaths appalling and dangerous especially for older people. Vsited Maria Pia beach most days by bus. AF bus service quick but did not seem to stick to a timetable especially on Sundays. Great places for eating. Hotel staff inHot la Magherita were fantastic and recommended many places to eat and very helpful with queries we had.

Alghero is a beautiful city to visit with plenty of beach's to choose from. Load of restaurants and bars. Depending on the time of season you pick it can be busy and crowded or it can be peaceful and relaxing in late September early October.

What an alluring old-world city with some of the best restaurants and cafés in the world. Our meal at Mabrouk was unforgettable, as was watching the sunset at Ristorante Angedras while sipping limoncello spritzes and waiting for Mabrouk to open. We will definitely stay longer the next time.

Fantastic modern, complete new and beautiful apartment. Only a 6 minute walk from city center. Everything you need and more is there. 2 balconies, with launching area + umbrella. 2 very well equiped bathrooms and bedrooms. And a very modern kitchen. Absolute fantastic and sweet owner who proactive informs you with video's about the key, private garage and how to find your way. This was the best apartment we had during our round-trip in Sardinia. We can recommend everybody to go here. (Especially the private carpark in the garage is a luxe)

Great apartament, great location and great host. The apartament was close to the city center, the beach, supermarket and the bus station. It was very clean, with a new furniture, clean towels, bed sheets, kitchen and a small balcony, like in the pictures. Giuseppe is a great host, kindly and asertive person, who give me all the information about the best places, restaurants and everything I need. The house is incredibly clean, fragrant and well decorated, located in the historic center of Alghero. Daniel was extremely kind helping us with check-in and check-out and recommending tours, beaches and restaurants. He also welcomed us with typical Alghero drinks and snacks. Maria Pia beach surprised us with its fine white sand and paradisiacal blue sea, this beach is approximately 35 minutes walk from the house. We had a very pleasant 5 day stay and we recommend this accommodation to everyone.

All the experience was fantastic! From the checking (I arrived a little late for checking, but even so, the host waited for me, with pleasure), to the checkout, everything went beyond my expectations—one special emphasis on my host, Michelle, who was fantastic. He gave me so useful tips about the city, which saved a lot of time and make me enjoy my stay in Alghero, even more. The breakfast was divine! The best Cappucino in Italy! For sure, a place to book again, when back to Alghero!

This place is in a rather quiet residential area, but still within walking distance from the old town. There are also some supermarkets less than 200m away. This is not a hotel, so power is not turned off when you leave the room. Not sure why people still put up with this nonsense anyway. In order to remind you that Sardinia is rather mountainous, the rooms are on the 3rd floor.
