Embark on an authentic Indian joyride into mad Mumbai’s chaotic streets with its revving rickshaws, bustling bazaars, timeless temples and colonial history. This melting pot of Indian culture features a mix of rich Bollywood wannabes and the city’s slum dwellers, all residing together in India’s most populous city.
South Mumbai is a useful starting point with the symbolic Gateway of India in Colaba welcoming local Marathis and tourists alike. Opposite is the impressive Taj Mahal Palace & Tower Hotel. The Art Deco Regal Cinema underlines Mumbai’s colonial heritage.
A top Indian curry comprises key ingredients and your Mumbai experience should also include a menu of fashion, film and nightlife. Leopold Café is a place to be seen and there are many other chic bars and clubs. You can do a Bollywood tour where you can even feature as an extra in a film!
During the day, take a trip by ferry to the Elephanta Island with its caves and then spend the evening people watching on Chowpatty Beach in the south or Juhu Beach in the west.
Booking.com has hotels in Adheri in the west, around the fort and train station in the south or nearby central Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, amongst many others.
We loved Mumbai. We had heard many negative stories about visiting Mumbai but we found everyone we interacted with friendly and trustworthy. We used the Uber App to order taxis and always found the drivers reliable and helpful and never once did a driver try to overcharge us. We ate at a range of establishments and found everyone helpful and accommodating, even when we asked many questions about the menu - even if they did not speak any English they kindly tried to assist us. We stayed in proximity to the Gateway of India (Colaba) and were able to navigate this area easily by foot, it felt safe even late into the night as many people were still out at later hours. We were in close proximity to tourist attractions (Gateway of India, Taj Hotel), restaurants of various price ranges, a nice brewery, Starbucks, tourist markets, boat rides, pharmacies, convenience stores and more...

Mumbai is an amazing city with lots to see and do.
Mumbai is an amazing city with lots to see and do. The city is on the waterfront and has a great vibe. It is easy to get around in the cheap and plentiful taxis although few drivers speak much English so you need to know the name of where you're going. Food and drink is easy to find.

Mumbai is chaotic, people, vehicles everywhere.
Mumbai is chaotic, people, vehicles everywhere. If you like a bit of chaos there are some good experiences to be had. I enjoyed, but my wife didn't. Get someone to show you around - don't try to do it yourself. There is lots to see and experience.

Great city, very busy and traffic is crazy.
Great city, very busy and traffic is crazy. Best to explore with a tour guide to save time. I spent three day trying to see everything and it's tiring. Sitting in traffic takes up a lot of time.
Use reputable tour guides and state upfront whether you are interested in shopping - else they will stop at each of their friends' shops to try and get you to buy something (I'm sure they get commissions).
The people from Mumbai were mostly friendly, but I did at times feel shop owners try to take advantage of me.

Mumbai is too big.
Mumbai is too big. Beautiful colonial buildings are used by government officials. Tourists and taking pictures were not allowed there. There are not so many things to do or to see in Mumbai. Don't waste your time. Two days are enough for Mumbai.

We were up-graded to the old tower ( a tower which was built in 1903 ), thanks to the Booking.com's genius loyalty program.
I would say this hotel is one of the best hotels in Mumbai, a luxury hotel well managed. All the staff were well trained, the breakfast was lovely and the stay was very comfortable.
