Neidin is the Irish word for Kenmare and translates to Little Nest. A Little Nest is exactly what was envisaged in 1790 when The Lansdowne first opened its door.

Although old, as it's a historic hotel, the bedroom and bathroom were refurbished to a modern and comfortable standard. The common areas of the hotel ( lounge, dining room etc) retain there olde world historic charm. I felt the lack of maintenance in some areas ( outside of hotel had a scruffy look, with weeds growing around the entrance area) let it down a bit. The food I felt was of a very high quality. We ate in the main dining room for dinner as well as breakfast, and also had a light meal in the bar area. All the food was exceptional. I would really like to compliment the chef/ food and beverage staff. I did feel thought that the inflexibility around hours that meals are served in the pub area vs dining room were limiting, and necessitated us having to seek food outside the hotel as we had to go off on an evening activity, and needed to eat around 6pm non evening.
We had a half hour in the Thermal spa garden. It was a lovely space, and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. Unfortunately the next day it was fully booked.
Just by way of contrast though, regarding value for money, we received complimentary access to such facilities at the previous hotel we stayed at...which was a 5 star hotel, compared to Eccles hotel's 4 stars... And the room rates were the same... Thus I felt the value for money wasn't quite there... especially as we stayed mid week.

Denis was an accommodating, caring and friendly host. Accommodation is tastefully decorated, plenty of storage for clothing. Ensuite bathroom was lovely, clean and excellent shower. I felt welcomed as a lone traveller and would recommend this as a great base for anyone looking to stay in or explore the Beara Peninsula. Excellent views over Castletownbere itself and a very peaceful spot behind the main high street, on the hillside, which allowed for a very peaceful and comfortable night's sleep each night.
