If you like the countryside and walking then this is a great place to come. Dartmoor is a beautiful place and the river here at South Zeal adds to the charm. We only had one nights stay but managed a three hour walk and a trip to the Finch Foundry which was most interesting. Furthermore, there was a Quaker cemetery and nice garden at this National Trust property. We wanted to visit the nearby market town of Chagford but didn't get time, a great excuse to come to this neck of the woods again. We accidentally found Fernworthy reservoir which was a sight worth seeing.

There are numerous walks in the area and as keen walkers we loved doing those. Also the village itself is very interesting. Some of the buildings have great history.
We have relatives there so it was nice to visit them. Dartmoor is easily accessible from South Zeal too so if you’re interested in walking there is plenty to do.
It’s also not far from Okehampton and a little bit further to Exeter.
a beautifully maintained historic inn in a lovely village. we were warmly welcomed and stayed in a very comfortable well appointed room. the hotel bar and restaurant were superb. we stayed two nights and had all our meals in the hotel. breakfast were superb freshly prepared with plenty of choice. we had two dinners - one in the restaurant the second in the bar. menu is varied and interesting. all the dishes were nicely presented. we loved our two day stay and can’t wIt to go back.
Attractive, comfortable room, well-appointed, and with an excellent folder of information. Our room, and the whole building are full of character and historic interest. The location is beautiful, and the hotel provides free leaflets of walks from the door. We walked the lovely 5-mile Belstone Cleave circuit, along the wooded river valley, taking in the edge of the moorland and fabulous views from the pub in Belstone. Nearby roadside parking was easy.
Food at the hotel was great, breakfast was really nice. the position of the hotel is very good for visiting the moors and National Trust places. We also loved the history of the hotel and its age.
The staff are lovely and Lyn makes you feel very welcome. The garden is great for enjoying a drink and relaxing.
We loved the location, which meant we could go for a lovely walk straight from the hotel. The old, historical building was very interesting and our room beautiful. The food and service in the restaurant for dinner were excellent - eating in the Snug by the roaring fire was lovely.
Bed was very comfortable and breakfasts were good. The location is very quiet at night. It is also awe-inspiring to stay in a hotel with such a rich history.
The meal we had in the restaurant during our stay was superb quality.
We loved the history of the building and the village of South Zeals. We also liked the fact that it’s location in a partially unknown area of Devon made it less touristy.
The hotel was steeped in history and well cared for. The staff were pleasant and helpful. The bedroom was spacious and very comfortable and also steeped in history.
Wonderful stay ,in a wonderful hotel . Staff were really friendly. Very clean and comfortable. Evening meals are amazing and good value . Highly recommended !!
