This Grand Old Dame of English seaside hotels is in sparkling condition throughout. She is not cheap - but she is an excellent hostess and she will fulfil your every wish if you let her. Some may find her old fashioned - but that is a major part of her charm. From Martinis in the afternoon to sunsets over the sea in the evening, she has everything you need for a relaxing weekend. The sound of the waves playing us to sleep at through an open window was an added bonus!

Our flight was delayed so we arrived after the restaurant closed. The owner and his wife made us welcome, even though they had closed for the night. They very kindly opened a bottle of wine and made us a wonderful dinner. Throughout the stay their hospitality was amazing. The owner would not let us walk to the bus stop, instead he very kindly drove us all the way to Sidmouth in his own car! They really could not have done more for us!

The staff was very very helpful. They gave us a room with an excellent view along the Esplanade. The breakfast was really good. We also liked that it was shoulder season and had fewer people. It was really nice walking into town and along the coastal trail.

Good choice of hotels and good shops in the town if the weather isn't great. (Loads of really good charity shops!)
Not many restaurants are open in the evenings (especially early in the week) so you need to book in advance. Myca, Pea Green Boat and The Loft are all good. Much more choice at lunchtime and good coffee/tea shops with lovely cakes. The Scott cinema and Marine theatre are both sweet and worth a visit.
Buses go to a few places if you don't have a car - and seem to be very reliable.
Jacobs Ladder beach and the Connaught Gardens are well worth visiting and are nicer than the town beach yet still very close to the centre.
Be aware that rocks etc can fall from the cliffs! The Jurassic coastline is amazing but it can crumble suddenly.

Sidmouth was a beautiful little seaside town with plenty of places to eat and drink!
Dog friendly beach in winter and lots of dog-friendly pubs/cafes! Beach is shingle/large pebble so not for everyone, but there’s a promenade/path the whole way along!
Lots of nice little independent shops & charity shops!
Parking gets very busy so you’re better off parking in the ‘weekend and walk’ car park slightly outside town - not far at all!
We visited in February but I’ve been told is gets very busy from May onwards.
There is a folk festival on the first weekend of August every year which I hear is great (but very busy)!

There's nothing there but the countryside.
There's nothing there but the countryside. Great for a solo weekend trip, but probably 1 week was too long. Especially when the accommodation was disappointing.
And from London, I don't think it's worth the drive.
Having stayed in two hotels and two B&Bs on our Cornish trip I would rate the B&Bs much higher than the hotels for bed comfort, hospitality and attention to the guests. We had a nice quiet bedroom which helped a great night’s sleep. Breakfast choice offered was huge so one would have to go a long way to beat the choice for a non cooked breakfast. Hospitality and help was also good so would recommend to anyone who wishes to stay just outside Sidmouth
LOVE THIS HOTEL, and the AMAZING staff, truly a 'throwback' to an earlier more genteel and mannered time. From the moment Anthony, in his dapper suit & panama hat, met us at the curbside we knew this would be a special stay. It is worth splurging to get a room at the front of the hotel with views of the sea. Sidmouth is incredibly charming, without massive crowds. We are from California, and we will make the journey to return here!
Room described as compact double was perfect for us. Even a partial sea view. A window you can open for fresh air and to hear the waves and smell the sea. Isn't that what you want when you are by the sea. Everything we needed and very comfortable. We had dinner and breakfast in the hotel. Great quality food and we liked the all the staff we met. Hotel is close to everything you might want to access in Sidmouth.
Everything was superb! the welcome, the staff, the room, the food and good to have a carpark. The hotel is a 5 min short walk either to the seafront or the town and shops. The owners were just so welcoming throughout the whole stay.
The hotel is so clean, quiet and inviting. Bonus it has it's own private garden with chickens freely enjoying the space.
A BIG thank you to The Woodlands Hotel for a great holiday!!!
We had room 35, perfect size , and bonus to us they allowed dogs, the room we had , was clean and had easy access to outside so that we could take our dog for a walk without the worry of disturbing anyone in the early hours. Right next to the hotel is a lovely walk along the river Sid. Room was very comfortable and breakfast was perfect, location also great , 5 min walk to Sidmouth coast
What a fantastic hotel! Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Spacious, stylish room, with a great ensuite bathroom, and stunning sea views. Beautifully cooked breakfast along with lots of choice of cereals, fruit, yoghurt etc. We ate supper in the hotel almost every evening as the food was so good (and excellent value too). Will definitely stay here again next time we visit Sidmouth.
Ideally situated, for us, for a stay in Sidmouth. Hotel was a short walk from town .
Lovely room, spacious and clean with comfortable bed.
Staff were really nice , friendly and helpful .
Very good choice at breakfast and cooked breakfast was excellent . We also had an evening meal which was very good and good value for money .
We were a family party of ten and had a large table for all at breakfast and dinner. The service was always prompt ,food excellent and the dining room is so pleasant with its views down the coast. Have stayed here numerous times and will come again! Best value hotel in Sidmouth.
five minutes from the sea front but quiet location. great sleep, spacious room, dog friendly, great swimming pool. super friendly staff providing great service. very tasty food and eager to accommodate various dietary requests. staff went extra mile to cater for our dog as well
The staff were very friendly. The hotel had a very relaxed atmosphere. It was decorated to a high standard and the bedroom was good size and well furnished. It was in a great location being near the wonderful Byes river walk into Sidmouth
I love this hotel,I've been before and don't feel out of place being on my own. Staff are wonderful and nothing is to much trouble, location excellent. Sidmouth is a gentile resort and is perfect at this time of year for a relaxing break.
Lovely B&B in a peaceful setting just a couple of miles from Sidmouth. Wonderful breakfast with an unusually wide range of choices. Comfy bed, large room, nice big shower. Liz is a wonderful host--very welcoming and helpful.
Breakfast and evening meals all excellent and not expensive. Room was comfortable and well appointed. Staff attitude and helpfulness could not be faulted. Would recommend as a base for walking in and around Sidmouth.
Friendly and efficient welcome. Choice of rooms. Large comfortable bedroom. Good beer selection and quality. Attractive menu. Good food on the whole. Nice breakfast room and selection. Relaxing vibes. Dog friendly.
The location is really nice and it has a sea view, also the night sky was amazing, you could see all the stars on a clear night. Also loved that the property is dog friendly and it's close to the donkey sanctuary.
Breakfast was well organised and good quality cooked breakfast was provided. The location of the hotel is perfect for accessing the seafront in Sidmouth. The staff were polite and friendly.
Dan and Megan where the perfect hosts, excellent breakfast cooked by Dan with their own chicken eggs. This is definately a hotel I would return to time and time again
