As a former inn keeper I know that sometimes things are not what one might expect, but how you deal with this is a true reflection of how client focused an establishment might be.
I had booked two rooms and my room was exactly as expected, bright cheery and had a great view over the harbour. The bed mattress was a little too soft for my liking and I think might slowly sinking towards the end of its life. That said I did sleep well. The bathroom sink had a loose hot tap as the plastic washer had snapped underneath it. I imagine that trying to get a simple thing like that fixed on Islay is an issue and it caused no problem as the tap worked fine but I would worry how long it might be before a leak happens. The crew who serviced the rooms did a fantastic job and cleanliness was top notch.
Breakfast was simple but tasty and there was a good selection of choices. All the staff I engaged with were delightful but a special mention must be given to the ever smiling Kim on reception.
Despite facing the main road in Port Ellen the hotel was quiet. Th weather was unseasonably warm and dry and the sun shone long and hard; thus the view from the front of the hotel was fantastic.
My friend was disappointed in his room choice. Nothing wrong with the room but simply too small for him and he had selected the wrong room. As the hotel was full he was unable to move room for two nights thus he decided to check out and move to the Islay hotel. No 1 Charlotte Street had no obligation to offer him a refund as it was his choice. However they choose to refund the two nights he had not stayed which is simply 'above and beyond'.
If you want a reasonably priced in Port Ellen I would heartily recommend this place and do say hello to Kim from me.....she is a commensurate hospitality professional with many years experience and is also extremely charming.

Lovely, small and scenic, set around a beautiful bay and also with a ferry terminal (note, this was main reason I selected Port Ellen for the destination of my final 3 nights on Islay; unfortunately, just before the trip, CalMac had announced that all ferry trips to/from Port Ellen would be diverted for the period from early Sept through mid-November to Port Askaig (on the eastern side of Islay). Since traveling that direction via bus can have a more difficult bus schedule to coordinate with the early ferry (for connecting at Kennacraig on the mainland to bus to Glasgow), so I ended up booking a Loganair flight back to Glasgow for 9/28 to ensure getting there in time for my early a.m. long-haul journey GLA/AMS - AMS/SFO on 9/29.
In general the town has wonderful dining options, scenic walks, both a small Co-Op and a Spar as grocery options, fantastic aged stone buildings, and the paved whisky trail at the far end of town to get to Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg on foot or bicycle, and if you have the energy (and often good rain-gear), you can keep going a few miles further on foot to the historic Kildalton Cross and Chapel.
And I would be remiss to not mention the lovely flock of swans at the north end of White Hart Beach!!!

The food at the Islay Hotel was superb and very reasonably priced. The service was excellent too. We also ate at the Seasalt bistro and this was nice too, slightly more expensive than the Islay Hotel.
If you arrive on a Monday like we did you may not be able to get into the Islay hotel unless you have booked in advance and the Seasalt is closed Mondays. We got a Chinese takeaway from Ellen's Wok - the food was good but we found the rice a bit stodgy.
The other thing was for 2 meals we ended up with 4 plastic take away boxes with lids and food remnants that we couldn't recycle. Apparently there is no food recycling on Islay at the moment which means that everything goes to landfill. However this should change in the near future. The litter bins in the street were full of everybody else's take away meals too!
My recommendation for food is to book in advance to avoid disappointment!

Port Ellen is a wonderful place. A great beach. Just the right number of places to eat. It has a smashing traditional Pub called The Ardview where visitors can meet `The Locals` all in all a first class base to visit the rest of Islay.

Port Ellen is a tiny village on the south of Islay with a mainland ferry port. However, sometimes the ferry is cancelled so be prepared to travel back up to the north of the island if this happens. The village is extremely picturesque but if you like hustle and bustle Bowmore is more touristy. However there are 3 main distilleries within a few miles and the beaches are superb. If going remember to take clothes for all seasons as in Scotland the weather can change in seconds, from a blisteringly hot day to freezing and wind-buffed. But scenery is out of this world.
We arrived after quite the kerfuffle having had the ferry cancelled and then booked on to another one, which then went to Port Askaig instead of port Ellen - but to be greeted to a lovely calm guest house made all the difference. There was not problem with our delayed arrival. Breakfast with Laphroaig waffles was off the charts wonderful!!! Probably the best B&B breakfast I've ever had! If you're in Islay and wanting to visit the Port Ellen distilleries this is the place to stay.
The setting is beautiful. You can walk through the golf course to the beach and it's like having your own private beach. The rooms are comfortable and clean (not luxurious but cozy). I don't think any hotels on the island are that fancy so this is definitely one of the nicer and more spacious ones (rooms are not huge but at least they aren't tiny). The food at the restaurant was pretty good too which is convenient. Staff and people on the island were extremely nice.
Excellent hotel which has fresh decor and brilliant staff and very close to ferry terminal. Hotel has a lovely large guest sitting room which is great on wet days/evenings. For the sunny days they have a large outside garden area across the road with plenty of seating. A generous breakfast is on offer. Our room was quite small however it was very clean and had a wonderful comfortable bed. Great hotel and I would recommend it.
We stayed on the ground floor, amazing location in Port Ellen, 2 mins from shop, pubs, ferry and beach is opposite. Basic accommodation however had everything we needed comfy twin beds, table and chairs, TV, kettle, plates, cutlery and small fridge which was amazing! Hosts very lovely , friendly and accommodating. We will definitely stay here again. Perfect location for staying on Islay with 3 distilleries within 4 miles.
Port Ellen is a great location to stay on Islay. The view from the room over the bay was great. The continental breakfast kept us going all day, and having the back sitting area & use of the kitchen at night came in very handy as covid restrictions meant it was hard to get in to a any place to eat.
Cala Sith Guesthouse provided very nice accommodations. The location in Port Ellen is great with 3 minute walk from the Ferry terminal. The guesthouse is welcoming, comfortable, and clean. The proprietor’s communications before arrival were thorough. We very much enjoyed our 2-night stay on Islay.
Niall was so welcoming and accomodating and the room is exactly as described with a gorgeous view of the beach and a stones throw from a restaurant, takeaway, pub, and post office! It is a perfect location to explore Islay and just around the corner from the start of the 3 distilleries walk.
A really great stay! Excellent host who makes you a great breakfast each morning that you get to choose, and he can give you information about everything on the island. The rooms are small but well equipped and comfortable. Perfect location in Port Ellen.
Staff and proprietor couldn't have been more helpful, friendly and accommodating. Accommodation was very comfortable and warm which was much appreciated after being outdoors in poor weather. Good and varied continental breakfast.
The hotel was small and charming. The staff were helpful and informative and incredibly welcoming. Very convenient for getting around Islay. The room with the sea view was wonderful. Will definitely stay here again.
Well-equipped kitchen with everything needed for cooking and cleaning. The property is well situated with a quick drive to Port Ellen and many of the distilleries on Islay.
The people were super nice, the food was incredible- especially the breakfast. It was cozy, and you really can't beat the views out into the Port Ellen harbor. I loved it!
