A beautiful little scenic seaside village, which has the main A9 road meandering through it. Easily accessible for all, with a train station too. Provides stunning views out across the North Sea, with the opportunity to capture some local wildlife. The villlage has a well stocked local Spar shop. Take away shops, restaurants, pub and hotel. All the necessary facilities for a break away. Only an hour drive away, is John O'Groats, Dunnet Head and Duncansby Stacks. All are well worth visiting, and easily recahable for all ages. Situated on the NC500, it's a perfect location both for exploring the village, but also the country close to it. Would definitely recommend a visit

Lovely friendly place, lots of manageable walks.

Lovely friendly place, lots of manageable walks. Plenty places to eat tho I’d recommend booking in advance of planned visit if in peak holiday times. Choice of gift shops, interesting museum to look around and explore the history of the area. Different options for accommodations from air bnb self catering to b&b, hotels, and area for camper vans passing through.

    Outstanding little town.

Outstanding little town. Very nice people, lots of history, great river and ocean front, adequate dining (good choices for food, just not a lot of them), fantastic (yet quiet) access to the NC500 route and destinations. Excellent 9 hole volunteer run golf course (clubs available to borrow...it ain't Royal Dornoch!). It's fun, relaxed and runs on donations. Telford Bridge, nearby sea bird watching (Whalingoe Steps is incredible, of course Dunnet Head up north too), Ousdale Broch, Telford Church, Helmsdale River ($$$ fishing) and the beach. We were in Helmsdale 3 nights and could have stayed 2 more.

    Convenient for travelling A9.

Convenient for travelling A9. A nice walk around Harbour after driving. A working kitchen just down the corridor. Easy for making toast in morning or cooking breakfast if you wished to do it. A washing machine was available to use for a small charge unless staying for a period when it was free.

    Pleasant town on the coast.

Pleasant town on the coast. Disappointed neither of the pubs were serving meals to non locals (apparently staff issues), however found Thyme & Plaice and had a lovely meal there. Dog friendly, relaxed and informal venue. No alcohol licence but happy for you to bring your own.
