The grandeur of the building and the quality of accommodation in the Deluxe Single Room, which was more spacious than I expected, with good lighting and work space, a really comfortable bed and quality bedding. Staff were great throughout. I also liked the evening food options in the bar, and breakfast, with its buffet and cooked-to-order options.
In the heart of the city centre, this elegant Victorian hotel offers stylish rooms with 32-inch Freeview flat-screen TVs and free WiFi. Carlisle Train Station is next to this property.
There is a great boutique grocer on the way in to town.
There is a great boutique grocer on the way in to town. We dined at the Green Hill Inn 8 miles distant and had a wonderful dinner. The next morning, we had a short drive into the Lake District. It’s a gorgeous place in the country.

Dalston is a delightful little village just outside of Carlisle. There is a central "square" and this is where the accommodation is. There's various shops including an excellent co-op, butchers, gift shop and fish and chip shop. There used to be an excellent pub and restaurant on the square but sadly this has closed. There are also a couple of cafes. The one opposite has a Paddington bear sat outside in all weathers. You don't do that to teddy bears so I wouldn't go in! Outrageous.
There is a lovely walk down by the river. You cross the road and head towards the white bridge over the river. Go past until you see a turning to the right. Carry on down there, past a large chimney and turn right again across a bridge. Then take the little path down to the path beside the river. It's a lovely walk back and only about 20 mins/half an hour.
