FAQs about hotels in Canterbury

Heavenly Heritage and Literary Legend

Canterbury’s religious and historic significance has inspired literary greatness. Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’ were based on pilgrimages to the bygone shrine of Thomas A Becket, who was murdered here. The Marlowe Theatre is named after the 16th-century playwright born here, and the Canterbury Museum has an exhibit on Rupert Bear, whose author lived in this River Stour city.

River cruises and punting provide fantastic views of the striking weavers’ houses right on the water, and of Westgate - the UK’s largest city gate. Other sections of the city walls remain, and there are also ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, named after the 6th-century saint who brought Christianity to England. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury, but the modern-day seat is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral, dating to the 12th century.

From the same period are the Norman castle ruins, occupying the site of a wooden fort constructed by William the Conqueror. The mound they sit on in Dane John Gardens is thought to be a Roman cemetery, and an original mosaic is visible in the Roman Museum.

In the Buttermarket half-timbered houses and historic inns are interspersed with shops, and big name brands line the Whitefriars Shopping Centre. The Canterbury accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap hostels and city centre B&Bs.

Loved the town, especially the cathedral - naturally! Lots to do for a couple of days as there's SO much history in and around the town. Everything is in pretty close proximity and therefore in walking distance which made planning easy. It's very picturesque with a variety of things to do for any age group - children and families and dogs seem to be well catered for. Entrance fees are commensurate with, or even slightly cheaper than, similar sites elsewhere. We had lunch at The Refectory - totes delish and reasonably priced. We had Sunday supper at The Parrot - go early if you want a roast dinner, it's VERY popular and sells out fast! Whitstable is beautiful and only 6 miles down the road, so worth a visit too using Canterbury as a base. We also drove to Sissinghurst Castle - that was fabulous and well worth a visit, So lovely driving through the Kent Downs to get there.

Vibrant cathedral city with a wide variety of shops and eating places. Sadly two of its three city centre department stores have gone. Plenty of tourinst attractions including a sizeable theatre with a varied programme of shows and concerts.

The staff are very helpful and attentive. The rooms are well presented with plenty of towels in the bathroom. The restaurant served a really good breakfast and I also enjoyed the choice of evening meals. I would recommend this hotel as being good value and would stay again when next in Canterbury.

I know Canterbury very well as I used olive there for 6 years. it is well worth visiting, but can get very crowded. Best to visit at quieter times of year, not in summer. Easy to get around on foot. Good bus service to other parts of East Kent. Eating places to suit all sorts.

Gets a bit crowded like London you get a lot of tourists to see the cathedral, but I have never seen so many shops in the high street and loads of pubs and places to eat. Lovely walks around the park and river you can go punting on the river

The cottage was very clean and tidy and had free parking. We arrive at 10:00 on the Friday night, after a 5 hour journey, to be greeted by the lovely Brian, who made us feel very welcome. The property is situated close to the centre of Canterbury so we could walk into town easily (10 mins). The property had everything we needed for our short stay. The garden at the back the hotel has a lovely seating area. We would definitely stay again.

The hotel is comfortable and easy to find, and provide an extremely nice breakfast. The lovely centre of Canterbury is approx 12 minutes walk and very easy access The manager provided a good nap to use, but thus wasn’t really needed. There is a small car park attached to the hotel, but you may need to park elsewhere if it is full. We didn’t use the pool, but it looks lovely
