The Royal Hotel Campbeltown, hotel in Campbeltown

Boasting a beautiful location next to the harbor, with rolling hills in the distance, this hotel is 5 miles from Machrihanish in the heart of Campbeltown.

We were arriving a bit late. The lady working the desk called to make sure we were getting along alright and then inquired if we had anything to eat. She said the restaurant was closing right about when we planned to arrive. I told her not to worry about it and we went on ahead. Once we arrived she said she kept the restaurant open for us so we could have a meal. This is exceptional customer service and we are very grateful.

John was exceptionally attentive and helpful when I had a bronchitis and was considering seeking medical care. That was before I ever reached his property. My daughter and I were offered two rooms, both spacious, and well appointed there were a variety of snacks, yogurts, and drinks available in each room. The sitting room is lovely and filled with good reads.

It was just right, not too busy and not too quiet, unfortunately the ferry from Campbeltown to Ardrossan had been withdrawn so we had to endure the long journey back which was not in our weekend plan. So if you are coming make sure the ferry is operating.

The town is on the downside of things but back on the way up. The two distilleries in town were excellent: Springbank and Glen Scotia and we toured both. Actually there is a small third one, Glengyle as well. There used to be over 100 distilleries before WW1. This is an area known also for its outstanding salmon and cheese. It's relatively undiscovered by tourists as well. I would recommend it and hope to be back again. Getting around in town was done with taxis.

Campbeltown is a very cozy, and very friendly little town!!!

Campbeltown is a very cozy, and very friendly little town!!! We loved the people there! People would go out of their way to help us with directions or any questions we had. The Harbour is so beautiful, breathtaking!! The town still has an old feel to it with a lot of the original buildings around 1700 to 1800’s still standing and in use!! Gorgeous architecture!! Be sure to tour around town on a rented e-bike or car. Well worth it!!! We had a wonderful stay in Campbeltown!!

I like Campbeltown, it's a lovely place with great food etc.

I like Campbeltown, it's a lovely place with great food etc. and I would encourage more people to visit. It may seem inaccessible as it's so far from everywhere else, so going out of your way to get there is well worth it.

I haven't been to Campeltown for 20 years or so and we visited on our mini tour of southern Scotland. A great base to venture out to Callander, Saddell and Machrihanish. We ate at No.42. The food is delicious, the staff engaging and welcoming but it's a bit pricey.

Cambeltown is the southern point of the kintyre 66 route.

Cambeltown is the southern point of the kintyre 66 route. It has an interesting working harbour and 2 distilleries to visit. One, Springbank, is right in the middle of the town. Nearby are a couple of golf courses, links I believe. A drive will take you to the Mull of Kintyre lighthouse but once you park there’s a steep hike and the road is challenging and not for long vehicles.

I've stayed at various locations in Campbeltown as I travel for work. I've stayed in B&Bs, Air BnBs and hotels, however Gowanlea has set the standard so high that anywhere else will now be a disappointment. John is a brilliant host and really goes above and beyond. Full English breakfast was perfectly cooked and their attention to detail can be seen anywhere. It's more like a Boutique Hotel than a B&B and the photos on the site really don't do it justice. Hands down the best place to stay in Campbeltown.

Brilliant location for exploring the South of the Kintyre peninsula, only a short drive from Campbeltown, (or walk/bus if you prefer). Apartment has everything you need to feel at home, we settled to the place the minute we walked in the door. Although situated near a road, we had no problem at all with traffic noise, and enjoyed a peaceful sleep every night. Lovely unobstructed views over fields to the hills.

Bruce and Tracey run a great hotel. They have opened up their huge mansion of a home and are friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable of the Campbeltown area. You must try the full Scottish breakfast and also check-out Bruce's very special bar. The hotel sits at the top of the main road into Campbeltown, with a short ten-minute walk getting you down to the shops and distilleries (Glen Scotia and Springbank)

Perfect location pretty much in the centre of Campbeltown, a short walk across the main road to the harbour. The apartment was spotlessly clean, with WiFi and all the amenities you would need. Really comfortable beds too! I emailed Sam and George asking for a slightly earlier check in. Had an answer within an hour accomodating my request. Perfect hosts.

An excellent location in the heart of Campbeltown. Parking for about 8 cars in the rear. Room was a decent size and the bathroom was large with some toiletries provided (soap, shampoo). The restaurant has a small menu; the food is great. Good bar. The whole staff was very friendly. Easy walk to distilleries.

Kirsteen was welcoming and an incredible host. Great care was shown to present the room in an inviting way. Although the rooms were warm, due to unseasonably warm Scotland weather, they were comfortable and we had everything we needed.

The Royal Hotel in Campbeltown was closed due to Covid so we were transferred to the more beautiful area of Machrihanish which we loved, although we were not there for the golf! The Ugadale Hotel was super.
