I loved the fact I had my own little type flat in the court yard. Really comfortable also nice sitting area downstairs with a tv and a bathroom to the back. Very clean and comfortable, the bed on the top landing was very comfy, will definitely try and book again. As for the breakfast it was outstanding.

This is an interesting alive village.

This is an interesting alive village. There is a railway trip that goes from Alston to Scallywag from the station in town and from here you can explore Hadrian's Wall and Bowes Castle. As it is high in the Pennines, some amazing views of the local area.

Lovely oldy worldy place to stay.

Lovely oldy worldy place to stay. Lovely walks from the doorstep. Good selection of cafe's and pubs for dining out. Local co-op and spar shops for buying food and a handful of lovely independent shops. Beautiful scenic location, We stayed for 4 nights and didn't use the car once as everything we needed was on the doorstep. Would definitely stay again in Alston

Alston is a beautiful and unspoilt authentic tyneside...

Alston is a beautiful and unspoilt authentic tyneside treasure, nestled in the south tyneside pennines. It is perfectly located to some of the most stunning scenary in the UK. Whilst it is central to the C2C route, it is just slightly off the main tourist areas to offer wilderness and solitude balanced with easy reach to primary historical AOB. Hadrians Wall, stunning Penrith, Ullswater, narrow gauge Tyneside railway, are just a few of the amazing things to do and places to visit that are on offer for a packed holiday or break. Cracking traditional pubs, super friendly and warm locals, and outstanding wildlife.

A beautiful and tranquil small town with awesome countryside...

A beautiful and tranquil small town with awesome countryside and beautiful walks. Unfortunately, many local businesses have closed but there is a great take-away shop (Jack's) and a fantastic pub (The Cumberland Inn). The locals are fighting back and I wish them well with their Enterprise Town. If you are looking to get away and experience some beautiful solitude this is a great place to visit - just be careful and don't choose the accommodation I did (see my review). There are lots of hills, even in the town, and the pavements can be tricky. It's a long way from Melbourne, Australia but I hope to be back one day. I hear that there's a steam train that runs in the summer and I would love to experience it.

When 2 grandparents are travelling with a teenage grandson,...

When 2 grandparents are travelling with a teenage grandson, it’s not easy to find a place that it warm and inviting and meets all our needs. Lovelady Shield House Hotel was perfect! The online ratings for this property were out of date - it was perfect in every way. The rooms were lavish and beautifully presented with the best quality fittings and fixtures. This property has been recently upgraded and restored sympathetically with its history. The staff were so warm and friendly and made us feel at home. The breakfast was amazing and although they are not currently serving dinner the pub just a mile down the road was brilliant. Located near the geographic centre of the UK there is so much to see nearby with Hadrians Wall Romans Forts and much more. We loved this property and cannot praise it highly enough 10/10.

A beautiful town with some lovely pubs and restaurants.

A beautiful town with some lovely pubs and restaurants. Cumberland arms was our favourite with nice food and amazing views on the beer garden /large balcony outside. Very quiet, chatty, friendly staff at the pubs but not a lively late night nightlife. We went for peace and quiet which is exactly what we got. Some. Beautiful walks with Ashgill waterfall a few minutes drive. Most impressive waterfall in seen in the UK! We got to stand behind it and touch it which I've only done at niagara! Will definitely be returning here
