With arguably the most impressive Roman heritage outside Rome, Nîmes is truly a sight to behold. Its most awe-inspiring structure is the virtually intact Roman amphitheatre. The gladiators are long gone, but a matador statue outside gives an idea of its current use, which is most celebrated during the annual Feria.
Another amazing Roman monument is the Maison Carrée, a colonnaded temple. The Temple of Diana is less well preserved, but still maintains some of its arched roof and interior details. The peaceful, surrounding Fontaine Gardens cover the grounds of the former Roman baths and still contain elegant water features.
Also water-related is the incredible Pont du Gard, a triple-arched Roman aqueduct across a river north-east of Nîmes. Other Roman remains include the Tour Magne, and 2 gates that allowed access through the city walls.
The Nîmes Archaeological Museum in the former Jesuit college provides background to this history and also houses the Warrior of Grezan, a pre-Roman statue. Another museum houses a fine art collection, and the simple cathedral is also worth visiting.
In addition to plenty of restaurants and bars, Nîmes has a good range of accommodation. Booking.com’s options include luxury hotels by Parc Expo Nimes, and cheap apartments near the train station, all easily accessible from Nîmes-Alès-Camargue-Cévennes Airport.

So many historical attractions to visit, all within easy walking distance from the Royal Hotel. Public Transport was plentiful as was the bars, restaurants and cafés. Favourite place we visited was the Arena, we also enjoyed a visit to the Roman Aqueduct, a 30 minute drive away. Everything else, we walked to. A really good variety of restaurants serving very reasonably priced meals, plus our hotel had a restaurant. Nowhere to avoid in our opinion, everyone we met was happy, helpful and kind. We would happily visit Nimes again in the future and recommend the city.

Full of Roman history, monuments in Nimes are within a walkable distance. Worth buying the Discovery pass which gets you into the amphitheatre, Roman museum, Maisonette Carree and Tour Magne. The pass can be bought from whichever site you first visit.
Also visit the Jardins de la Fontaine. The park is extensive and very impressive and you can see the natural spring that used to be the water source. We found the Castellum where the Romans brought the water supply into Nimes via the Point du Gard. From a central chamber the water was fed out to areas in Nimes through lead pipes. It's amazing to still see where the outlets for the pipes were.
From the bus station in Nimes we went on bus number 121 to Pont du Gard. This is one trip that's a must!! We got off at Vers Pont du Gard. The bus stop names are well displayed on the bus well in advance of the stop. From there was about a 10 minute walk to the visitor centre and another 10 to the aqueduct. There is a cinema and museum in the visitor centre. The museum was quite interesting but the film in the cinema seemed a bit pointless.
We also took the 130 bus to Arles. We bought a Liberty pass that got us into 4 monuments and 1 museum. We did the amphitheatre and the theatre, where we sat with our picnic lunch. The cryptoportiques, where you get to wander in the underground cellars, was more extensive than we had thought it would be. We decided on the Alyscamps for our 4th monument visit. Tombs of Roman and Christians lined the avenue leading out of Arles. Would have liked some more information on what some of the inscriptions could have been.
In Nimes visit Les Halles. This indoor food market has a superb display of produce and even if you are not buying, is well worth the visit.

Nimes is great for a few days; enough museums and Roman history to keep anyone amused for a couple of days (including children) - the town itself is relatively small but has good connections by bus and train to other areas worth exploring. The Tourist Information will provide advice on how to get there.
A combined ticket for the Roman remains and the museum is great value - especially if you engage with the audio guides.

A very clean well presented city , easy to walk around when in the old quarters. Good for shopping , eating and historical places . We visited Le Maison Carree . The arena , the Jardins de la Fontaine. On a triple combined ticket purchased on line . A very pleasant stay
Great location, wonderful apartment, but if you are driving in, it is really difficult to find because of the one way streets. You would do well to come into Nimes on route D999, then Ave. Jean Jaures and park at the public lot at Jardins de la Fontaine, only 3 blocks from the apartment, It is much easier to walk to than to drive to. The apartment offers parking for a fee, but the space is so small (we had a Fiat 500 and it was a squeeze to get it in) you would be much better off to use the public parking. 13.40 euros a day and worth it.
L’Imperator delivers excellent service from beginning to end!
This hotel is well located near Les Jardines de la Fontaine. The room was spacious, well designed and it had a view of their beautiful courtyard! The food was delicious and served with care.
We loved all the details and care of how our stay was handled, including a little treat we were welcome with called La Simone.
We would love to stay at this hotel again and we highly recommend it to others travelling to Nimes.
This place is amazing!! We loved that it was right in the middle of the "centre-ville" next to everything. 3 minutes to the Arena, 3 minutes to the Maison Carré and shops all around. The apartment had everything, was beautiful and we absolutely loved the balcony. The air conditioning worked great and we slept better than we have on our whole trip in France. The host was nice and the building is beautiful. Definitely will stay here again on our next trip to Nimes!!
This place carries the spirit of southern France so well, that if you want to experience a very authentic stay - this should be your stop. The house is located in the outskirts of Nîmes and has a beautiful huge garden with all sorts of trees and herbs, that not only add to the atmosphere, but also appear on your plate at breakfast (either fresh or as a tasty jam). The true soul of the place, however, is the host himself who made everything feel very natural.
A lovely small hotel in a quiet neighborhood but only 5-10 minutes walk from the train station. Very convenient. Staff was very welcoming and kind. Gave excellent local information and suggestions for dining. The room was spacious and very comfortable and cozy. The bed super. Electric kettle in the room with teas, infusions and instant coffee. A nice touch. And Netflix ! A very very nice stay. Thank you !
Everything was great, as shown in photos!
Also to Highlight that we were left with plenty of cold water bottles which was a really nice touch considering the extreme hot weather in Nimes those days. We would recommend the place. We found a parking spot in front of the apartment and left the car there during our hole stay.
Beds were comfy and the AC worked perfectly too.
The hotel is in a backstreet in the historic part of Nimes. Inside is areal mix of old and new. Our queen room was modern, spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was excellent. The hotel doesn’t have a restaurant and we didn’t book breakfast so I can’t comment about the food, but I thought the hotel was good vale for money and I would use it again
The hotel is an easy walk from the train station with our suitcases. Our room was a huge apartment, very comfortable with views across the large city square, and we used laundry facilities on a lower floor. The hotel staff are friendly, and we noticed quite a few pets staying. Nimes is an amazing city and is full of surprises.
The hotel has its own secure parking, swimming pool and spa. The room is very spacious and was very clean. The staff at the reception were very courteous, welcoming and helpful. Upon arrival, we were upgraded to a room with balcony. A very pleasant stay. If back in Nîmes, will definitely stay there again.
Central location and very comfortable and spacious with everything we could need or want. The owners are exceptional, wonderful and attentive to our needs. Had a garage available for the car, which was wonderful since everything to see in Nimes is walkable from this location. A perfect and magical stay.
Location was an easy walk to the historical old town. Breakfast was good with very good variety. Hotel has a long driveway so is setback from the traffic and noise. This gave it a bit of an oasis setting, but it was a bit more difficult to find. Lots of free parking. Room met our needs.
Its as described. Straight forward. The rooms are nice and clean. Andrew the hotelier is great. Kind and informative. We had a little balcony over the street. Its a few minutes to the square. A very nice experience and 7 minutes walk from the gare.
The space, the peace, the cleanliness and the private garden. Ludmila is the most wonderful host who really cares that her clients are comfortable and enjoying the property. The location for visiting Nîmes is superb with public transport close by.
A great place for the weary traveler. The location could not be better, across from the train station. Very friendly and helpful staff. I generally like France and some stress-free aspects of being there, here is an excellent example.
Great location in the city center of Nimes.
Friendly staff (they even called us when they thought we hadn't checked in already)
Hotel has a lot of character (some floors are uneven, which adds to the experience)
Parking was beneath the hotel and fairly cheap at only 10 Euro. Shower n the room was great, best in our trip of 5 cities in Spain and southern France. Very near to the coliseum and Parthenon buildings.
Room was clean. Bathroom modern. Secured parking. 40m walk to Nimes arena/amphitheatre.
Staff good. Bar very nice. In the middle of a good commercial centre with a Lidl just behind hotel.
Rooms impeccably clean.
Bar, lobby, restaurant, pool, spa - perfection.
I will only stay at this hotel on any future visits to Nîmes.
Highly recommend.
