Lyon is a perfect destination to sample the food of the region. With its own gastronomical culture, be sure to try several Bouchon in the area. Spend a full day on the island, a full day in old Lyon and another full day exploring the gardens and the upper part of the city (we missed this last part so that we could have stayed an extra day). The town is a little expensive, so you don't want to wait too long if you are on a budget, but if you can stay centrally, you will have better access to the whole city.

Vieux Lyon was lovely to stroll around. We didnt know what to expect going there but we really enjoyed the break in lyon. The food was very good, huge selection of restaurants to chose from. Anywhere we went for dinner, or lunch we found the staff in the resataurants very pleasent. The boat trip was very enjoyable and it showed us the scale of how big the city is. There is plenty of shops, and open spaces. The city is easy to walk around. Fourviere has some amazing views of the city and the basilica of notre dame was well worth a visit.

The riverside walk was rather too urban but the return walk on the other river was much nicer & we were able to walk up to the church & the funicular back down was great. Even saw 2 curry houses but that’s for another time.

Lyon is a very friendly place with lots of energy from walkers, runners and bikers. We were surprised from the how well the path/trail system is in the city. The food, bakeries, cheese/charcuterie shops are amazing. Love the energies from all sorts of people hanging out late at night!

Lyon is a beautiful city that has everything you could want for a short stay - culture, food, shops, museums, parks and lots to do.
It's very walkable and we bought a Lyon City pass so we could jump on trams/metro when we got tired - no need to think about buying individual tickets all the time.
The pass entitles you to enter so many attractions for free or for a reduced fee - well worth the money.
Lyon people are so welcoming and many speak good English but if you speak a little French are so delighted and encouraging!

The location was very good to reach various points of interest with a short walk (e.g. Vieux Lyon, Place des Jacobins, Place de la République, Notre Dame de Fourvière, etc.). Staff were very friendly, reception is manned 24/7, the hotel shows eco-awareness.
This was our 4th nights stay in different hotels in France. it was the cheapest, but by far the best.
