Was in the 18 bed dorm and was surprised it was an exceptionally comfortable stay. The dorm was quiet through the night. Lights out at 10pm in dorm room. The bunk bed was comfortable and stable. Clean linen was provided for you to make up your own bed. Provided with a swipe card for exterior door after hours access and a padlock with key for a large locker in dorm. I used the correos luggage transfer to/from here and it went smoothly. Great place to stay if doing the Camino Del Norte (it's about 2 blocks off the camino trail). Mason Leioa restaurant just a few doors down does cheap pinxtos. In the morning after about 6am the albergue has free coffee and cake. The albergue has a lounge and dining area with TV but quite a lot of people also lay on their beds with their phones as there looked to be 2 power outlets per 2- bed bunk (eg. One outlet per bed). Ladies bathroom had 2 toilets and 2 showers. The guys had the same. They have a room where everyone's hiking shoes (and any wet clothes etc) go so that the bunkroom doesn't smell bad. Seems to be a lady and a man who run the place, both lovely. She speaks some English.
Pension Norte, a property with a shared lounge, is set in Portugalete, less than 1 km from Vizcaya Bridge, 7.4 km from Bilbao Exhibition Centre, as well as 12 km from San Mamés Metro Station.

It is a grand old building. Staff were helpful. We were able to leave our luggage for the day after checking out.
This hotel is a former palatial home dating back to the 18th century, situated close to Arena Beach and 20 minutes' drive from central Bilbao.

The hospitality and friendliness were just so good. The kind of treatment that makes you feel bad if you didn’t leave them a good review haha! The room, toilet, the whole hotel, everything was clean and nice. Definitely would come again if I’m around the area in the future.

There’s a lot to see in Portugalete - plenty of information at the Tourist Office. The nearest beach is just minutes away
The hanging bridge (puente Colgante) is an extraordinary piece of engineering and is the most predominant feature here
There’s a produce market - fruit/veg/flowers and plants three times a week.
There are boat trips too but these only operate at weekends from 15 September
We found a great Mexican restaurant in the old town

The bridge is interesting, but you can't spend a week looking at a bridge!
El Bote tour around the bay and up river to the city center is very good value for money and highlights the contrast between the depressed industrial wastelands and the modern developments in the city.
Many of the attractions in the Tourist office leaflet were permanently closed, ie Getxo Aquarium and the Salazar Tower, so check websites first.
Although there are lots of bars and cafes, we had problems finding restaurants open within elderly walking distance. We had a great lunch in Náutico Berria but when we went again one evening without booking, found that the kitchen is only open in the evenings at the weekend.

It was the festival to celebrate 700 years since the founding of the town, so there was a lot to see and do. Portu is an interesting place down by the river and Puente Colgante. It is easy to get to Bilbao and other places. There are lots of friendly bars and people.

Location great for access to Bilbao and for the ferry to Portsmouth.
However, Portugalete is not geared up for tourists. We stayed Monday night, which is never the best night for eating out in Spain, and we could not find any decent place to eat.

People seemed very uptight.
People seemed very uptight. There was no variety of food in the area we were staying. We were there for three days the weather reminded me of London. Prices were higher than the rest of other cities I have visited in Spain
Such a beautiful hotel in a really fantastic position overlooking the river and right in the centre of Portugalete. We were incredibly fortunate to coincide with a festival and the gentleman on reception gave us very helpful advice to best enjoy the celebrations. We had an amazing evening. The beds were huge and very comfortable. The breakfast was delicious and beautifully presented. We stayed here as a last night treat before getting the ferry back to the UK from Santander - it turned out to be a highlight of a very lovely holiday!
Beautiful apartment, very clean and as described. Had everything we needed for our week. Great transport links. There’s a supermarket right next door open until 9pm. Short walk to Portugalete metro station (buy a Barik card and top up from the machine in the station) and short walk to the bridge over to Getxo (for the beach) and you can use your Barik card for the crossing. Great play areas close by if you have little ones. Host was lovely.
This hotel is close to the Puente Colgante, a historic transporter bridge built by one of Eiffel's disciples in 1893. That was a bonus we weren't expecting. The hotel has a historic feel, its main entrance facing the pedestrian walk along the river rather than the street. Our room was very nice, with a balcony from which we could see both the river side with the bridge and the street side, with sidewalk escalators coming up the steep hill!
The location was perfect for travel to the factory I was visiting. The room was spacious, clean and very comfortable, although the lighting above the desk could have been brighter. The view was ok, I was at the side of the hotel so overlooking the main road, but the view beyond that was good. The last time I stayed at the Pedra Bela I had a room, with balcony, at the rear of the hotel, that view was great.
We had a wonderful stay at the Albergue Bidd-Ona, the whole staff was very welcoming and gave us great advice to visit the areas. The place is very friendly and we got to meet some great people.
The bathrooms and the kitchen are very clean and convenient.
Portugalete is also a nice town, directly connected to Bilbao with the bus and metro.
I loved this place. Welcoming receptionist who spoke good English. International standard hotel room with balcony and good view of the Vizcaya Bridge. Right on the edge of the old town and next to the Camino de Santiago for convenient morning departure. Good wifi. Safe, bar fridge and espresso maker with pods. Comfortable bed. Clean.
The hotel is in a great location across from the hanging bridge, but unfortunately not very close to public transit. We had a view with our room which was wonderful, and the hotel itself was really beautiful. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the buffet had good choices.
The apartment is very comfortable and spacious, full of light. Great views. Best location in the old centre of Portugalete, literally 2 min walk to Puente Colgante, Town Hall and Santa Maria church.
It’s fully refurbished, with a modern and practical layout, ideal for a large family.
Absolutely just a bed, with a pin to get into the room and thats it, wifi was there, the room was very very small, there were no desk to sit and work,
All in all like a ghost hotel, with nothing else than a bed and a hot shower
would i do it again
no
Welcoming hosts. Spacious, clean and comfortable flat among Portugalete locals. Free parking for our car (potluck for a nearby parking space but we were lucky). A short walk to the metro. A 15 minute walk to the river in Portugalete.
The hotel has had a complete makeover since our last visit. It has been a very tasteful upgrade with lots of thought and planning going into it. The room was well maintained and the river view and bridge were a bonus.
Li stink Location Location near the Camino! Perfect stop in Portugalete!! Gorgeous facility. I had a goth re its room with a wrap-around balcony. Spectacular views of the UNESCO World Heritage Site ferry!!
Great apartment in the center of Portugalete, near the Bizkaya bridge, well equipped with everything you'll need for a family of up to 5 people. There is a foldable bed in the living room.
The place was very clean and the hotel as a whole was clean and large. There was a room for meals and the staff left some food in the kitchenette for visitors to take.
Beautiful hotel. Perfect location with exceptional views of the Bizkaia Bridge. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The restaurant offered delicious meals.
