The hotel was very close to lots of great hiking. The beds we had had automatic controls for reclining the mattress, That was cool. The staircase is very clean and has cute decorations along the stairs in a “down home Harz” kind of way.

The first impression of Landhotel Alte Aue is obviously the charming exterior which matches the quaintness of the village. Most importantly, though, the reception was welcoming and kind. Even though the man was unable to speak English, he made every effort to ensure understanding, and there ended up being no issue with the language barrier. Which brings me to say, throughout my entire stay the staff were exceptionally kind and helpful, and the service was efficient and to the highest standard.
In terms of cleanliness -- absolutely spotless. I tend to be a bit on the germaphobic side, and I've never felt more comfortable in a hotel room (it is important to note, this especially includes the washroom, which was sparkling). On that note, the water was hot and the shower had good pressure. I also had some laundry to do, and the heated towel rack dried my clothes in no time.
My sleep was restful as the room was warm, equipped with extra blankets, quiet, and dark. In addition, it felt safe: guests not only can lock their own room, but also may lock the building itself with the same key.
Finally, the breakfast (included in your stay!) the following morning was exceptional. Delicious jams and spreads with fresh bread, fruit and yoghurt, charcuterie, and the best coffee I've had so far in Germany. In short, I am so thankful to the staff at the Landhotel Alte Aue for such a pleasurable stay. They well deserve each of the ten stars I've given, and I'd highly recommend their location for a beautiful stay in the Harz mountains.

Really spacious apartment on the ground floor. 1 big room that can sleep 4+ and another bedroom with a double bed. 1 bathroom, big kitchen and living room/entrance, huge lounge. In a small town, but can walk everywhere you need to be for groceries, restaurants etc. Well equipped kitchen with a microwave and dishwasher. Small garden to the back. The lady who came to let us in and clean at the end was very lovely, despite the fact that we couldn't really communicate with each other due to the language barriers.
I liked the fact, that the flat (because it had a big room, separate kitchen and a bathroom) was quite big, warm, had a fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. The owner was very welcoming and helpful.
I stayed there in order to visit Harz mountains. I wish I had more time to spend in this place and see the local village and the neighbourhood.
I was hiking the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg and stayed one night at the B&B Orchidee. For me it was a convenient place to jump off the trail for a nights accommodation. Richard the host was very welcoming. My room was spacious, the bed was very comfortable and the breakfast was good.

Room was way bigger and had more facilities than I expected for the price. Beautiful location in the Ostharz with hiking routes easily accesible. There was a vending machine store with basic necessities and a bank nearby.
The hotel is ok and the prices are fair. Not a luxurios hotel. It has a good location, right in the midle of Altenau. Good parking place. The breakfast was ok, but a little bit dull.
Location is excellent for the Harz region. Altenau a bit dated but still worthy of a stay if you’re out and about. The family room was perfect for our two adults and two children.
