The suggested walking route took in the majority of the historical buildings in the town. The centre square is very interesting - don't forget to rub the monkey statue by the town hall on the head!

This city may be not at your radar screen and may be easily eclipsed by Brussels, Gent or Antwerp - but if you decide to visit Mons, you will be surprised how many things it has to offer. A plethora of restaurants and bars, magnificent churches, interesting museums (Mons Memorial, Doudou Museum, Mundaneum, art museum - well, now in renovation but organising events, the Belfry and more) and, most of all, a great atmosphere of a typical Waloon city, the streets that can lead you to new discoveries... I was really enchanted! And it will be even better as one can see a lot of restoration works in the city ongoing, including a, well, imposing, railway station. This city has a potential, indeed.

Mons is the site of the first contact between the British...
Mons is the site of the first contact between the British Expeditionary Force and the invading German armies in August 1914. The British were stuck in a difficult position owing to the fact that their flanking French allies had retreated without informing the British, and they had to dig in along the Mons-Conde-Charleroi canal, which they held against all odds for the day of 23rd August 1914. Not only were the first shots exchanged here, but also the first two Victoria Crosses were won during the battle. If you have a good guide or guidebook, the greater part of the battlefield is largely unchanged, and after a day of looking round, you have the town square of Mons, where the troops rested before moving up to contact. The square is unchanged, and anyone who has seen any of the photos taken at the time will be able to situate themselves easily - while enjoying a beer of a meal at any of the town's excellent bars and restaurants. I recommend the Lebanese restaurant on the main square.

The area around the railway station is under contruction (for years); however this small city is charming. The central square with a renaissance city hall and many terraces is beautiful and lively and there are some interesting sights to see (museums, church, belfry). On the other side of the station is a big modern shopping mall.

This was just a stopover on our homeward journey. There is a HUGE redevelopment at the station just opposite the hotel, although they had stopped work when we got there. We might come back in two years to see the work when it is finished. Right now it looks like a giant spaceship!

Rather lovely city to walk in and enjoy the cosy streets.
Rather lovely city to walk in and enjoy the cosy streets. The Belfry and historical city hall and surrounding buildings are very nice to see and visit. The city offers big brand shops but also smaller niche stores when you look for it. Great chocolate milk by the way at the Texas café :)
We arrived earlier and they let us take our luggage in the room so we can leave for our trips. It has a nice terrace outside and a garden for kids to play. The breakfast was good. The room was clean. The staff helped us getting a taxi. They have a restaurant and serve lunch and dinner which is great if you don’t want to pay for taxis to get in the city and back . If you have kids there is plenty of games, puzzles and books you can keep them entertained ( in our case the second day was raining so we stayed in) .
We very much enjoyed our stay! The room was beautifully decorated and the bed was very comfortable. It was nice to have access to a kitchen while staying there. Clear check-in instructions were provided for us prior to arrival as to how to get into the building and our room when we arrived if no one was around. When we met the owner Serge on our day of checkout he was incredibly kind and you can feel his passion about renovating this property. The free parking on site is a huge bonus.
Dear Robert and Francoise, thank you so much for a best accommodation ever. You made me feel like a part of your amazing family, no words to describe how comfortable and inspired I felt in your fantastic apartment. Everything in this place made from heart and filled with love and soulful energy. Art is everywhere- paintings, books, furniture, design and a way of human being. Dream hotel! Amazing hosts! ❤️
I will always remember your kindness and this remarkable experience.
Great location, close to the Grand Place, grocery store, and major routes. This is a beautiful apartment, with a bright and spacious living room offering views of the Mons Belfry. The kitchen was very well equipped. It was very comfortable and surprisingly quiet. The area is very safe. The owner was very nice and accomodating when we we had a special request. Thank you very much! We highly recommend this apartment and would definitely stay here again.
Everything! Our host Mathias was very nice, he gave us all the necessary details about the location, how to get there and upon our arrival, he greeted us and provided us with all the details about Mons, its history, sights, food... Even though it was just a short stay, it was unforgettable. We highly recommend the Mons Dragon House to anyone who is planning a visit to Mons.
We liked EVERYTHING!
The apartment was renovated, clean, with nice and modern furniture and with beautiful mural art. Fully equipped kitchen, large fridge...
Clean and beautiful toilet and bathroom with shower.
And it's location was great, around the corner from a popular town square and a hundred steps from Grand Place, the city's beautiful main square.
Stylish, spacious, very comfortable and beautiful room, with everything one needs for a perfect weekend getaway in Mons. The location could not be better, walking distance from the train station and near all Unesco landmarks. Warm welcome at the reception and overall fantastic experience at Hotel St Georges! Loved it and hope to come back!
The hotel gym was surprisingly good, I enjoyed being able to workout here. The A/C worked great and the showers had good water pressure. The bar and the separate restaurant were exceptionally great. Food was delicious, drinks were well made, and there is a great beer selection.
Very nice hosts friendly and helpful. The house is in a perfect position walk distance from the city center and the trainstation. Very big room with an amazing view!
Very nice hotel, convenient resturants very local and polite staff, being English in a Belgium hotel, they spoke the English and was brilliant all round
