There is not really that much to do in Salta from a tourist perspective. Better to spend your time in the surrounding areas such as Purmamarca, Tilcara, Humahueca and Salinas Grandes north of Salta or Cafayate (highly recommended) to the southwest of Salta via the Quebrada Las Conchas. Stop at the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) and El Anfiteatro (the Amphitheatre) for spectacular scenery.

We loved the historic neighborhood we stayed in, but others might find it a bit tawdry. No one spoke English, so brush up on your Spanish. We got along ok. Close to whatever we needed. Be sure to go to the market. Day trips were awesome. Buses were questionably reliable and usually full. Grocery store near us had everything we needed. We usually cooked at home but found a good bakery, pizza place and empanadas nearby. Be aware that if you need to do laundry, you take it to a bodega where they do the laundry for you. That was a new one for us. Walking on the pedestrian area with stores galore was a highlight. The plaza de Julio was awesome. Be sure to go there. Leave enough time if you are a detail oriented person. We stayed 16 days and it wasn't enough.

Salta sits in a valley surrounded by amazing natural beauty...
Salta sits in a valley surrounded by amazing natural beauty in every direction. The city itself is a bit run-down, narrow broken sidewalks, poor street drainage after rains, old buildings. But it has it's charm!
There are a few great neighborhoods for food, bars and cafes. Nice teleferico to see city from, great museum of High Altitude with preserved Inca children. And going North to Tres Cruces or South to Cafayate will astonish your eyes. Gorgeous natural scenery!!

Salta is a nice, tranquil, smaller feel of an Argentinian...
Salta is a nice, tranquil, smaller feel of an Argentinian city than say Mendoza or BA. It is a tad run down, broken sidewalks, bit more trash on streets than other cities, but it has charm regardless. The people are very friendly, never once did I feel unsafe anywhere day or night, and the surroundings/nature/beauty of the landscape is gorgeous! It is a great city to base from and explore all that the province has to offer.
Without a doubt the best restaurant with the best prices is on Calle Balcarce and called '802 Cocina a las Brasas'. I ate there 4 times!!
Also go to MAAM and see the preserved frozen Inca children found on a mountain top in 1999.

Lots to see and Lucas helped us to get settled.
Lots to see and Lucas helped us to get settled. He was great. Gave us information about the most important museum and organized tickets.
We went to the restaurant neigbourhood and saw oena dancing and music.
Breakfast was very complete every morning and enjoyed the toast and eggs and fruit. I was there for a week so could have used a bit more variety. Location was great right across from a park and easy walking distance to all the sights and the main square. I like to run so having the park close and the main street nearby also has a bike running median. Lastly the appearance of the hotel is truly boutique, very attractive and loved the staff. One staff member helped me with opening a bottle of wine and got me a very nice glass to use!
Perfectly located, between the main Plaza 9 de Julio and the Balcarce peñas for going out at night. This hotel is gorgeous. It’s located in town, but the rooms are completely silent at night. The staff were very helpful, and we loved the egg and avocado toast breakfast. The medialunas were also
memorable. My partner loved the music selection in the lobby: jazz, which is enough for him
to love the entire experience of staying here.
The location is perfect. The street is nice, and typical Salta. The hotel is very nice. Everything was great. The room; wow! We liked it a lot! And the small garden is good to relax. The reception lady was very kind. She helps you and give you the possibility to store your bags and to use the garden earlier (if you arrive too early). You can also stay in the garden when you check out.
This is such a gem! The hotel is great, and the staff very helpful. It has all the facilities that you need during a short stay such as a little gym and a pool. The rooms are very spacious and comfortable. The hotel is also located on a quite side street. Easy access to all the main tourist attractions. Try the massage! the Massage therapist was wonderful!
The owners Flor and Ivan were lovely and helpful throughout our stay. It was our first stop in Argentina and they provided lots of recommendations for restaurants, bars etc in the area. We also needed to buy Argentinian currency on our arrival here and they offered help with that too. Nothing was too much trouble. Can’t thank you enough!
We had two separate stays here, before and after a tour around Northern Argentina and Bolivia. Excellent hotel, very new, beautifully decorated. Good breakfast. Staff were extremely welcoming and helpful.
The location was great: right next to the park, close to the cable car and bus station, and a 10-minute walk from the main square.
There’s something lovely about good, old fashioned Hotel Management! This hotel is in a great location and has all the services you’d need - it’s very well run. Our room was nice and large and clean. It’s ideal to wander around central Salta during the day and up to Calle Balcarce restaurants and bars at night.
Hotel Colonial Salta is a charming small hotel located downtown, in Plaza 9 de Julio. You will live in an old building, with all the facilities, decorated with stylish furniture. The architecture is amazing, and the atmosphere is one of the best I have seen in my travels.
This hotel is for those willing to forgo some luxuries we usually expect in a hotel in order to have a decent price. That being said, I would stay here again. It's a relatively cheap price, with a pool, some breakfast, and not to far from the center of town.
excellent central location near the Plaza. Staff were exceptionally kind and helped us arrange transportation. older hotel with lots of character. Quiet room with comfortable beds and everything we needed. Excellent breakfast.
I really enjoyed my stay at Selina in Salta. It was easy to meet people and the facilities were like a hotel. Wifi was a bit slow but there were lots of people (remote workers) trying to use it, so this might be why.
Nice Hotel, pleasant staff, excellent location and free parking. Room was comfortable. Towels were large and fluffy. Breakfast was good and the staff ensured the buffet was always replenished in time.
Great location and place for a short stay in Salta. The room we had faced the road, so it was a little noisy in the evening/morning. The check in process was super easy and the room was very clean.
In no exaggeration, this is the hotel with the highest cost-performance ratio in Salta. It comes with breakfast, has a kitchen, friendly owner, and attentive staff!
everything about this hotel was lovely: the room, the property, the breakfast, and the staff. would absolutely stay here again! thank you for the lovely vacation
This is an old but mighty, bright house adapted as a lovely family hotel. The location can't be beat. The staff are AMAZING. Sweet, and super helpful. :)
