The castle/hotel is great.. with lovely rooms and preserved features around the hotel. This was our 2nd visit and the food and service was excellent yet again. I feel the whole package is fantastic value for money and we look forward to returning again.

The Ball Alley, hotel in Chester-le-Street

Located in Stanley, in a historic building, 3.2 km from Beamish Museum, The Ball Alley is a bed and breakfast with a garden and bar.

We stayed for two nights and used for a base to visit Beamish and other surrounding Roman sites. The room was comfortable and all the staff and Landlady were very friendly. The pub itself is very welcoming and the locals were very friendly and the noise was barely audible upstairs even with the live music on the Saturday night (which was very good by the way). The breakfast was really good with cereal options and full English with toast. We went to a pub called the shepherd and shepherdess inn a short drive or 40 minute walk away for dinner. Food is excellent and reasonably priced. We would definitely stay again when we are in the area.

We were attending the Monument Festival so the location was ideal. The staff were very friendly in all areas. The shower was hot and powerful, just be careful of the step up which is a bit dangerous.

Easy to find, good location and easy parking. The evening meals were good value and the menu varied. Our room had been recently decorated and was very clean, although they might regret using plain carpets, there were already some coffee stains.
