Set on slopes by Lake Geneva, Lausanne is a laidback and liveable city. The views of the lake and dramatic peaks of the Alps are simply stunning, especially from Sauvabelin Tower in the northern woods.
Surrounded by vineyards, this is an outdoor lifestyle city great for sports including sailing, cycling and hiking. In fact, many international sporting governing bodies and the International Olympic Committee are based here. There is also an excellent Olympic Museum. In winter, Lausanne skiing options include the Jura Mountains to the north-west, and the Valais canton south-west of the lake.
By the lake (Lac Léman in French) is the Ouchy port area, home to many of the Lausanne hotels and restaurants. To the north is the Flon district, known for its lively nightlife popular with students.
The cobbled Old Town – the Cité – is a Swiss Heritage Site on a hill at the city’s highest point. It houses the castle and Lausanne Museum, both watched over by the multi-spired Notre-Dame cathedral. At the foot of the hill are 3 squares with markets, one of which – Place Riponne – is on the Metro.
This is the world’s smallest city with a Metro, an indicator of the wonderfully efficient Swiss transport system, meaning that Geneva Airport (the closest to Lausanne) is easily reachable.
Lausanne is centrally located for French Switzerland.
Lausanne is centrally located for French Switzerland. You can explore the beach front, visit a castle on its shores, and take a 100 year old small gauge train to the mountains where snow remained in late May. The nearby towns of Montreau and Vevey are charming and accessible in 10-20 minutes by train. We also saw Bern in 1.25 hours by train - a lovely preserved medieval city much higher up. Trains are fabulous. Subway up the steep grade that is Lausanne are FREE and come every 4-5 minutes, so no worries about knees.

The quaint city is an hour away from Geneva.
The quaint city is an hour away from Geneva. Being on the banks of Lake Geneva, Lausanne is easily accessible to Evian by ferry. The lake edge is really stunning and allows one to spend a lazy day walking around. The Olympic museum is quite fascinating, and the aquarium at Aquaticusis very interesting for both adults and children. Do not miss the Farmer's market in the centre of town every Saturday morning where you can get some of the freshest produce possible.

We really enjoyed visiting the old town starting from the Cathedral, which although its undergoing restoration you can still go inside. The walk from the cobbled streets outside the Cathedral down to the train station is worth it, but you'll need comfy shoes to navigate the steep descent to Lausanne Station. The lakeside is a must see including the Olympic museum.

Try to avoid staying over on Sunday.
Try to avoid staying over on Sunday. All the shops are closed after 6 pm to 6.30 pm from Monday to Saturday and close on Sunday. So we feel wasted 1 day on Lausanne as it is Sunday. We only can walk around visit Churches and window shops on Sunday.

Lausanne is a fantastic city.
Lausanne is a fantastic city. The lake is simply stunning and if you are a tourist I think staying by the lake is possibly better than being in the city as it is so beautiful and changes all the time. The city has some nice upmarket shops and some lovely restaurants. There is a great metro service to get you up and down the hill and most hotels give you a free pass for this. There are lots of young people in Lausanne and all the restaurants and bars are very busy. We visited Montreux by train and Gruyeres by bus and Evian les Bains across the lake by boat.
Hôtel du Marché delivered on the facilities promised. The rooms do not have en suite baths, but the shared shower & WC rooms were more convenient than I expected. The rooms are small but very clean and having a mini kitchenette was handy. The hotel is convenient to the metro and buses. And in the incredibly hilly city of Lausanne, having a hotel with an elevator to our 4th floor room was great! Staff were friendly & helpful. The hotel offers a free public transportation card for your stay - a nice bonus.
The staff was very friendly and helpful during our stay in Lausanne! Our stay came with a free city transit pass, which was a nice surprise and useful because the city is built onto a hill, so if you want to go down to the lake for dinner, it's quite a hike; however, there is a metro station a two minute walk from the hotel, which takes you right down to the main city center at the lakefront! The location was great and the room was spacious for the price.
Starling Hotel was a wonderful experience and I will certainly come back when in Lausanne. The staff was amazing and friendly. I really loved my room and I can say it’s a super comfortable and well appointed hotel, which even gives you choices for the kind of pillow you want! Overall, if you are headed to EPFL Science Park, Starling Hotel is your only and best choice! On a sunny day, the view of Lake Geneva is simply amazing.
The Carlton Hotel is ideally located in a quiet area in Lausanne as it is very near to the metro to take you up towards the cathedral or down to Ouchy .
As we were two adults and a child we had an executive suite with separate seating area and a small balcony .It is a lovely hotel dating back to the turn of the last century and is particularly comfortable as it is air conditioned , which we really appreciated .
Our Amazing Room - On arrival the Hotel was full and we were lucky enough to be upgraded to The Coco Chanel Suite which was amazing, we were speechless as the verandah, room and view were the best we have ever stayed in on our travels around the world. We were so greatful it has been the highlight of our trip. "Thankyou Lausanne Palace".
Our room we had originally booked also looked amazing!
Good Ibis Hotel close to the center of Lausanne. Room is clean, bathroom was a real bathroom, not a plastic box like in many other Ibis budget hotels. Beds were comfortable, personel nice and friendly. Wlan was good and breakfast buffet a good mix of tasty things (breakfast buffet available from 6am to 12am).
I booked a special offer at booking.com with breakfast.
We (my partner, our dog & I) have spent one night at this hotel. The hotel and the rooms are very cute and we loved the Switzerland theme which is all over the place - it gives a really cute charm (especially for non-Swiss travelers). Also the location of the hotel is extremly good and you can easily enjoy Lausanne by foot from there.
My husband and I enjoyed our stay so much, we tried to come back the following weekend. The hotel and location are beautiful! Check in was quick and easy. The staff was super friendly. We enjoyed the air conditioning in the room since it was very warm outside. Next time we visit Lausanne, we will definitely be staying here again.
Very great location and the hotel is nicely decorated. The staff is great! They have a superbe rooftop to have drinks at night. We were happy to be able to park our car 5m away and the hotel offers a 50% discount. It was only 15€ for 24h (with the discount) so very affordable and cheaper than parking in Paris where we are from.
Business hotel just for tourist or workers. Ideal location for a short stay can be a cheap solution and a good alternative to other more expensive hotels. This hotel do not represent the real Switzerland trend and quality, of course for people searching emotions travelling in this great regions, the Vaud and valais.
The hotel is nice enough, but very expensive for what you get. Almost €300 for a night without breakfast and a very average room - maybe it’s just because everything in Switzerland is expensive. nothing wrong, just feels more like €150.
Very nice hotel on the lake front and 50m from the Olympic Ouchy metro stop. Comfortable room with a lake view. Several restaurants near by (as well as the hotel's). Happily stay here again.
You have everything you need: a kitchenette, a bathroom, dining table, desk, bed and a nice terrace. Mine was facing the Lausanne Cathedral so that was a big plus.
We loved the helpful trilingual staff! Very cute room. Comfy beds, very nice tub. Very helpful staff getting us acclimated to Switzerland. Very kind and helpful.
Everything regarding this hotel was fabulous. Location, Room, Staff, Breakfast
Excellent. One of the best places to stay in Laussane rather Switzerland
