At the hostel, the rooms are fitted with a patio with a city view. The rooms are equipped with a private bathroom and a shower, and some units at Museu Mafalala B&B have a terrace. All guest rooms feature bed linen.

If you want to get out of the city center/coast and experience genuine Maputo life for the everyday person then this is quite an experience. Mafalala is bustling with life day and night, there are people walking the alleys, all kinds of street vendors, mosques blaring, church sermons on the street down the street from bars playing Amapiano, a marketplace to buy coconuts and kids playing on a football field. All within a short walk of each other. Many people were friendly and said hello to me, I walked around alone, took some video footage and did go to the closest ATM. I had no problem, but the area has a bad reputation. I was told not to walk around after 10pm. Like many places in Africa you wouldn't want to have expensive items exposed. Then again the hostel was always ready to send me out with a staff member or even go and get anything for me. And within the hostel was safe. The area lays claim to the likes of Samora Machel and Joaquim Chissano, footballer Eusebio da Silva Ferreira, and poet Jose Craveirinha. The staff can arrange for someone to take you around for some kind of tip. Or there are paid tours by established companies. I got one of the cheaper rooms. For comfort I would get the larger room with bathroom next time. There was a window looking out over Mafalala. And from parts of the hostel you can get an elevated view looking over the neighborhood. There are nice art works around the premises. The area is a short and cheap ride to the city center with taxi app.

Looking for a hostel?

Budget travellers know that there is no better way to make the most of their trip than by staying at a hostel: save money for exploring during the day, and swap stories with fellow backpackers in the shared kitchen or bar in the evening. Dorm-style bedrooms with shared bathrooms are standard hostel fare, but private rooms are also available for those willing to pay a bit more.

Staff were helpful, the bed is comfortable, the air conditioning works well, nice view of the city, towels provided. The staff told us about the Yango app which is cheaper for getting around than using a tuctuc or a taxi. The location is inside the Museu Mafalala (the location on booking.com shows something different) which feels safe and is nicely decorated.

It was my second stay at Base Backpackers. Location is really good, there aren't many options in center of Maputo at such price. Area seems safe place there is a petrol station near. Generally good value for money

Great and extremely friendly and welcoming host, amazing breakfast, nice pool in the backyard, very good recommendations for restaurants etc. Almost being a part of the family. Was supplied with water, milk, cookies and fruit during my 2 nights there. Central Maputo, ATM, Restaurants, views of the Bay is all in walking distance in a safe area. Not as private as a hotel, but not like a backpackers. More like a good mixture between private rooms and easy possibilities around the pool for breakfast to meet others.

This was possibly the cleanest hostel ive stayed. Also 24/7 security makes it one of the safest. The staff were kind VERY relaxed. THEY HAVE MOSQUITO NETS.

Safe location in business district (close to ministries and embassies), just above one of the most famous local restaurants - a must try. Comfortable bed and pillows. Well-stocked kitchen and a small supermarket nearby. Cheap and quick ride to the airport by taxi (pre-booked by host, so no tourist overcharging) - 15-20min, 8eur. Currency exchange across the road offering good rates, better than interbank rates on credit card. Last but not least - nice artistic decoration all around the place and many green plants.

This is a budget hotel which provided more value that what is paid for. Do not go expecting five star services for the little amount you pay. Yes there are some issues, like the European style shared external bathroom (which was specifically outlined). Pay a few extra bucks and you get to stay in a suite with your bathroom. It has a great location, and easily accessible by taxi, facilities were fair, the breakfast was amazing and the staff was super.
