Get there early and head to the Osuary complex so you can have it all to yourself. Most people go the other way. The night show was cool, but not required, the daytime is a requirement for every explorer!

Stay in Valladolid and drive-- or better yet stay in Piste- and walk to the ruins and get there when they open at 8am. On the Sunday morning we arrived at 830am, there were less than 25 people that we could see-- total-- and no vendors yet. Our photos of the main pyramids have literally zero other people in the background, and we saw lots of colorful birds and enjoyed the empty grounds.
By the time we left at 11:30am, there were 3 or 4 thousand people there, mostly arriving on tour buses from Cancun, and the vendors were aggressive and noisy and it was less appealing of a destination. YES get there as early as possible.

Always impressive to visit but too crowded and touristy the last couple of times. The parking lot was only available for tour vans and buses so struggled outside to find a parking spot. Had to walk 600 meters to get to the ticket booth. Next time I'd go as early as they open to avoid crowds, heat and parking issues.

Chichen Itza is amazing!
Chichen Itza is amazing! Well worth suffering the heat and bugsI (even in February)
There are lots of vendors selling their wares. I've read that they are not usually handmade, which would explain why so many things were only ONE Dollar! Heard someone say not to buy wooden masks etc as they would not pass customs.
Bring: hat, bug spray, sunblock, water.
C.I. is very isolated. There are tour buses that take you from Cancun to CI.
It's a full day and usually about $120 dollars. Be careful not to confuse dollars and mexican pesos. At this time the peso is about 20 cents so 100 pesos is $5 dollars. I recommend bringing a debit card and some mexican $. ( Can be purchased beforehand at AAA)
Wear sturdy closed toe shoes as it is very dusty and rocky. No stairs, however. If you take a tour, they will feed you lunch about 2 pm. Bring snacks if you are accustomed to eating lunch earlier.
Be on top of your email and messages as the tour originally said they would pick me up at my hotel, but changed to another hotel the day prior to the tour.
If you don't take a tour, I would rent a car. Bus and taxi connections aren't the best. I took a taxi from Mayalands hotel to Valladodid for about $35. Then I took a bus to Cancun central bus station, then a taxi to the airport. I spent about $75 and it took the better part of the day.
Taxi's from Mayalands to the airport run about $200 US.
BTW, the tour takes you to a cenote where you can swim. Bring your suit and a towel, plus water shoes. The trek at ILKIL was about 100 stairs and slippery.
One last thing, as of February 2022, one must wear a mask in Mexico ALL THE TIME.

It’s definitely worth it booking a tour guide as there’s so many details that need to be pointed out in order to appreciate the experience. Though most guides seemed to be asking for 900 pesos, which felt too steep. So we were actually very lucky to find a guide called Miguel who goes around in a little car (as he’s disabled), who charged us 500 pesos and gave us an amazing tour.
Also, you’ll find there’s LOTS of art & souvenirs for sale, and they’ll quote you double the price if you can’t speak Spanish… so I’d suggest waiting until the end and buying whatever you like after you’ve seen all the stalls and haggle!

This ancient Mayan ruin is well preserved and maintained.
This ancient Mayan ruin is well preserved and maintained. Kukulcan is amazing but you cannot access or climb it. Doing this ruin with a guide was essential as the experience would have been much less without the knowledge a guide has.
Very impressive Hacienda building with comfortable porch for relaxing and pleasant pool/common areas. The bedrooms are set around the garden or pool and very spacious. Good bathrooms too. The breakfast was good although perhaps a bit expensive. We ate dinner here one night and it was a nice experience even if the food wasn't outstanding I'd recommend it for the atmosphere and service. Good cocktails too! Pool area nice. Very well located for Chichen Itza (5min drive)
Huge room, nice pool. Friendly supportive staff. Dream-location near the temples, with the sounds of the jungle.
Restaurant appeared to be very good and we returned there even. We don't do that normally. Also, during the day
you can have lovely snacks/drinks at the pool which is great when you come back after some hours at Chichen Itza, which
is really nearby and you can be there, long before the crowds come. We loved it !
We used this hotel for 1 night before we visited Chichen Itza ruins (in walking distance, about 2,2 km ) and super beautiful cenote Ik- Kil (about 6 km). Small pearl, hidden in center of town Piste. Comfortable beds and friendly staff, free parking in closed garden. Small pool for using and refreshing. Supermarket in next corner. Recommend.
Great pool area, conveniently located. The closest hotel to Chichen Itza!! Super nice breakfast and they serve early (7AM) which is great for an early start of adventures. Staff are super nice and always helped when we needed it. Beds are soft, not hard. People with long hair: bring conditioner and your own shampoo. Very good place over all :)
Nestled in a lush garden, Hotel Chichen Itza is a gorgeous and affordable hotel hosted by a kind and attentive staff including Armelo, the very friendly manager who was quite flexible with our schedule. Their wonderful restaurant, the yummy drinks, and the close proximity to the wonders of the Mayan world make this a must stay hotel!
The location is fabulous for an early visit to Chichen Itza - less than 5 minutes by car. Breakfast is served from 07.15 onwards, so you can have breakfast and arrive at Chichen Itza at 8.00 am, which is great. The hotel is good for a one night stay if you want to visit Chichen Itza early in the morning.
The property was gorgeous, secluded, and very comfortable. Staff was friendly, and helpful when I needed directions around town. Really enjoyed the restaurant, and would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to visit Chichén Itzá - staying a five-minute drive away from the site was perfect.
Luis is an amazing host, he welcomed us with fresh lemonade, prepares amazing breakfasts and has great advice on what to do around Chichen Itza.
We absolutely loved his garden, his dogs and recommend anyone to come and stay with him and his family.
The hotel is in beautiful buildings in landscaped grounds and really close to Chichen Itza. The staff were very helpful and arranged our trip to the site and organised a guide (all very reasonable). They provided transport too.
We loved this modest small hotel. Operated by a family in the outskirts of Pisté, the small town near Chichén Itzá, it was comfortable and in a good location. The family was very friendly and helpful.
The hotel is amazing, you feel like an old time explorer and a bit like Indiana Jones.
The view of the observatory building at Chichen Itza through the doorway and stairwell window is awe inspiring.
Vanessa and Joel were fantastic. Short stoll into Piste. The room was perfect and the pool area was perfect for chill out time after morning at Chichen Itza. Superb and thank you!!!
The hotel is very close from Chichen Itza it was very convenient to go at the opening time
The pool is so nice
The rooms are beautiful and confortable with good AC
Really close to Chichen Itza. Nice, and Clean. Nothing fancy. Has everything you need from a comfortable bed to a hot shower. The pool was a big hit with the kids.
