Cozy hotel, right by the Ichinose Family ski area. The staff is absolutely amazing, 100% focus on making your stay pleasant. We went there for a ski trip and it was really convenient. The public bath is great for after skiing, and both dinner and breakfast buffets were excellent, with many good quality choices.

Hotel Japan Shiga, hotel in Yamanouchi

Located 5577 feet above sea level, Hotel Japan Shiga is located within Shiga Kogen in Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, 328 feet from Shiga Kogen Ski Resort’s Ichinose Family Ski Area where guests can...

We stayed in the caravan, which was a trailer home on the slope. We could almost ski directly from it. The place was well set up for people who want to make their own food, of which we brought a lot. It had a big refrigerator, microwave and electric kettle. We ate on the floor from the coffee table, but there was a sofa that you could also eat on. The trailer had its own internet router which worked very well for streaming Netflix; something not typical for Japanese ski resorts. The hot water heater worked very well as well, meaning nice hot showers. The room had a small bath but there was a small but clean indoor hot tub at the hotel that is free to use. The place is very close to the Ichinose bus stop. You can take the bus for free to any Shiga Kogen area slope. But frankly it was not necessary as we were already right on the slope.

Wafu-no-Yado MASUYA, hotel in Yamanouchi

On just a 5-minute drive from Yudanaka Station, Wafu-no-Yado MASUYA features beautiful Japanese-style rooms, hot spring baths and free Wi-Fi. Some rooms boast a private outdoor hot spring bath.

Wonderful wonderful stay! From the moment you enter this beautiful place you enter another world to immerse yourself in a traditional Japanese setting. Leave your shoes at the door and slip on provided slippers. Escorted to your room and given your sized Yukata robe for wearing around the hotel and meals and Onsen. You absolutely must sign up for the half board meals. We were met at the floor 2 elevator stop by our personal waiter. He showed us to our private dining room and brought course after course of delightful foods (artfully presented and many delightful tastes). Some things we recognized but most we did not, but it as all good. We reserved a private Onsen each evening at 10pm that was the perfect ending of the day. We’re in our 70s so we opted for the traditional bedroom and the beds were comfortable and we slept well. We decided to walk to and from the Monkey park but could have taken the hotel shuttle. On our arrival and departed the hotel transported us from/to the train station. (Hint, the little coffee shop (Tea Salon Milano) directly across the major street from the little train station has excellent coffee and cheese cake). We can’t wait to go back to Wafu-no-Yado MASULA! We really hated to leave this wonderful place where we felt pampered by the staff.

Shibu Onsen KOKUYA, hotel in Yamanouchi

Japanese-style hotel Kokuya offers comfortable rooms that boast a private outdoor hot spring bath and free internet access. The hotel features 2 restaurants, a spa and spacious hot-spring baths.

This Ryokan was our favourite experience on our trip and one we will never forget. Every detail was unique and lovely, and every person working here is fantastic. We were picked up from Yudanaka station right as we arrived, which was so generous and good. Then once we arrived we were shown to our rooms and also served dinner by Hiro who was an exceptional host. The private onsen room we had called "Ayame" was quiet, comfortable and peaceful. Despite being surrounded by baths everywhere there was no humidity and it was fresh and cool. The rest of the private onsens throughout the ryokan were each so unique and interesting, with the larger open air baths being my favourite. You can reserve these if it's during busy times or if it's low traffic you can just go into any of them and lock the door behind you, meaning you can go as a mixed sex group or couple. If you have breakfast and dinner, these are extravagant and large multi dish meals full of variety, with everything being high quality leaving us feeling fueled and refreshed. I could go on forever about how great Kokuya is, but it's better to go there and see firsthand how amazing the building, the people and the onsen village of Shibu is! There are some things to be aware of that might be unusual for others booking who aren't used to Ryokans or Japan The tatami mat sleeping arrangements are hard, but I like this and anyone who prefers hard mattresses and sleeping on your back will enjoy them. Also note that the meals are large and varied, there is a western style breakfast available but to really enjoy this Ryokan you should be prepared to dive into Japanese Kaiseki dining with everything that it involves, from the raw fish and raw egg to the sea urchin and everything between. If you are too fussy and dislike most of the things it would be a big waste and loss for you. If you enjoy this, you will love it!

Might be better in winter, but in spring only thing to see was monkey park, and that only takes a few hours ( mostly travel time) as it isn’t very big. I was of impression it was a whole mountain, but it is just one small area you see the monkeys from. I’d suggest staying in nagano which was nice, and coming to Yamanouchi for a morning.

While Yamanouchi is known for its proximity to snow monkeys, it wasn't what stood out to me about the area. The snow monkeys just have too many tourists to be truly enjoyable. Yamanouchi has beautiful mountain views, charming winding streets with quirky decorations, and onsen hopping among different ryokans is something to look forward to. If you look behind the main street, you'll see many stairways leading to many shrines. We had dinner at a sushi restaurant ran by an elderly couple, on traditional tatami floors. It felt like eating at someone's house, and they absolutely stuffed us with delicious sushi. Two nights would probably be the best to fully wind down.

Amazing amount of terrain in the ski fields.

Amazing amount of terrain in the ski fields. Need to have better maps (in English) available for the runs. A (live) board showing which lifts and runs are open would be great, prior to entering the areas. The snow was amazing!!!! Restaurants were good however the area appeared to be directed at locals (Japanese) rather than tourists. We had to do a lot of work to find somewhere to eat. It would be great to have some public onsens available in the area.

Our stay at a ryokan just couple miles from Snow Monkey Park...

Our stay at a ryokan just couple miles from Snow Monkey Park was the absolute highlight of a trip filled with highlights. Specifically we stayed at Onyado Hishiya Torazo, and loved everything about it - the room, the food, the staff, and the oh so relaxing onsen! We made the mistake of only booking one night and the short turn around combined with outside temps down in the low 20’s (F) meant we never did try any of the public onsen. Trust me - two days here is the minimum! Snow Monkey Park ended up being another highlight (and between my wife and I, we have about 1,000 pictures to prove it!). Before going we were concerned that it might seem contrived at best and a bad situation for the monkeys at worst. But they were absolutely there of their own free will and happily making use of the large onsen on a cold winter’s day. Get there early - we got there about an hour after opening and wished we’d been an hour earlier. It started to fill up about 20 minutes after we got there. Here’s the weird thing, and the only downside - and I don’t quite know how to explain it. The town was basically closed! And we were there Jan 26-27, a decent snow had fallen a couple days earlier and a light snow fell the morning of the 27th. I thought this would be big tourist season, but we barely saw another sole in town. And those few we did see were almost all tourists out taking pictures in their yukata. This made for a very quiet morning, which was great. But we had planned to pick up our luggage at the ryokan after visiting the monkey park and meander through town stopping to eat, drink, or shop as we made our way to the train station. But nothing was open so we caught an earlier train and ate in Nagano while waiting for our Shinkansen.

The Ryokan Biyunoyado was just fabulous. They have shuttle bus to and from station. also to the snow monkeys. We were late and they returned to station to collect us. Onsens were great. The food was amazing and plenty of it. Japanese style room was very comfortable and beds made up when we were at dinner. Definitely stay here when you come to see the snow monkeys. it’s the best.

Its a great spot for visiting the snow monkeys and a quick snow board at Ryuoo Ski Resort. A walk through the older Shibu Onsen town is also fun for people who like that. We went to three different restaurants in the town and they were all good. The negatives were that the roads and paths were slippery with ice, so bring appropriate footware if visiting in winter (although your hotel might have some). Almost all places were cash only.

Loved my stay. Staying at traditional Japanese hotel was a really cool experience. Room was cozy. The onsen was beautiful. Not too far to walk to the main little town. They were able to pick me up from the monkey park. Really quick with their responses when I had asked to change my pick-up time. They don’t know too much English but it’s not hard to communicate with them. Just be patient with them and they’ll be patient with you.

Very cozy traditional Ryokan. Beautiful garden and private onsen, room with view of the beautiful garden. The owner is incredibly friendly and helpful! Breakfast was delicious, a feast. Definitely do the 9 public onsen tour in the traditional clothing they provide. I stayed there over Christmas and it was the perfect way to celebrate in the snowy beautiful Shibu Onsen at night. Everything was perfect! The room was wonderful and it was so fun staying at a traditional Japanese hotel. I loved picking out my Yukata. Undoubtedly, the best part was the private onsen on my balcony. It was pure heaven. Second best was the amazing and traditional food. This hotel was a wonderful highlight to my trip. Clean, comfortable and very convenient for Ichinose ski lifts, the Tappa Room (the only bar in Ichinose), Prince Hotel West Wing restaurants and the bus stop. Good onsen/ public bath. Basic but decent breakfast included. After the first day we got the room warmed up really well - heating is on from 3pm to 10am, and is very hot when it's on.
