Probably the largest room we had throughout our trip in Japan. This was a traditional Japanese style room with tatami mats, a low table and floor seating as well as western-style table and chair. It also has a fridge and an electric kettle. Free bicycle rental was amazing and we used their bikes to explore the shores of lake Kussharo. Staff are excellent and speak English very well. The hotel also has a public onsen that is open 24 h (you get a yukata, slippers, and towels in your room), a small souvenir shop, some games etc. Overall may appear a bit outdated, but the level of comfort is high. You can also order breakfast. Walking distance to the JR Mashu Station (about 1 km) with connections to Kushiro. Public transportation here is somewhat limited, but we managed: bus/train to Kawayu Onsen to see Mt. Io, bus to Lake Mashu 1st observatory + hike to Mt. Mashu, then return by hitchhiking, Wakoto Peninsula and Kotan Onsen by bike.

A 3-minute walk from Kawayu JR Train Station, Hotel Parkway features a hot spring baths, karaoke. Free Wi-Fi is available at the lobby, and laundry facilities is on-site.

Breakfast and dinner was adequate and delicious. The outdoor onsen was lovely ... while the indoor onsen was a little rundown but was good enough for a warm relaxing bath. Area is relatively quiet but it is a good midpoint to visit the beautiful Lake Mashu and Lake Akankoso region.

Surrounded by mountains, lakes and the great wilderness of Hokkaido, Mashuko Youth Hostel offers simple accommodations with free WiFi access. Lake Mashu is a 16-minute drive from the hostel.
