While Nagano is best known outside Japan as a Winter...
While Nagano is best known outside Japan as a Winter Olympics host city and a favourite place for people to ski in Winter, it is also the site of the Zenkō-ji Temple.
As one of the most important Buddhist sites in Japan it is extensive and beautifully landscaped. Despite the large number of visitors we felt calmed each of the times we walked through the grounds. You can also purchase a ticket (¥1,200) to climb the Niōmon Gate, visit the main Hondo and walk through the dark tunnel, turn the giant storehouse that contains a complete set of sutras, and see the museum in the war memorial pagoda at the rear of the complex.
Nagano itself is a nice prefectural capital surrounded by forested mountains. In the good late autumn weather it was beautiful and we enjoyed wandering the small streets finding little restaurants and stores, and looking at the interesting mix of old and very new architecture.
We didn't visit any of the popular museums and galleries as after almost 4 weeks in Japan we were "museumed out", but did stumble across the Nishinomon-Yoshinoya Sake Brewery which is well worth a visit, and had lunch at Unaginoyado Sumiyoshi - a well-regarded unagi restaurant.
There are also lots of scenic and nature locations to visit in the surrounding hills, but you need more time than we had to enjoy them.
Overall, Nagano was a bit of a surprise package and being just 1½ hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen I would recommend a visit as part of any Japan itinerary.

Handly location to use as a base for surrounding areas like Matsumoto and Obuse. Just be aware the train to Obuse is not on the JR or the IC/Suica/Pasmo and you'd need cash to buy the ticket.

Many different activities available in the area - cultural, historical, and natural. The Togakushi Shrine Pilgrimage and Kamikochi National Park were my favorites. Excellent souvenir shopping on the street in front of Zenkoji Temple. The city is very walkable. The train from Tokyo provides easy access. During hot summer months it is cooler in Nagano.
I love this property! We arrived late in the evening and had to leave the next morning so we didn’t get a chance to visit the onsen but the hotel itself is located on a very cute street in Nagano with lots of grade restaurants, and the train station at five minute walk away. Also, they had snacks in the fridge and also they serve free noodles at night which I thought was really cool but sadly we didn’t get to try those either. I want to come back here for the full experience!
Really good size room with a lovely big bed that we haven't found in many of our Japanese hotel stays - so definitely appreciated the space :) breakfast was amazing, incredible view of the city and mountains with a lovely selection of breakfast food, drink, and desserts! Lovely staff, and good location (10min walk from station) with nice shops and food market. 10/10 and would definitely love to stay again as very affordable.
The ryokan is only steps away from Zenko-Ji temple and thus very convenient to go to the monks procession and chanting at 5:30 am.
We had a traditional Japanese room and it was a nice experience. Also enjoyed the public bath house in the ryokan.
A bus from the train station took about 50 minutes to get to the beginning of the 2 km. walk up to the snow monkeys park. There are a few food places and restrooms.
If you want to stay in a comfortable hotel when you are tired from travelling all day and don't want to spend any more time hassling around with transfers and luggage - then stay here. It's directly connected to the station, there are small nice restaurants nearby and the staff are helpful. Rooms are comfortable and a good size for Japan. They have onsite parking if you have car.
The hotel is right opposite to the train station, and from my window, I can see long-distance buses waiting at bus stops to pick up travellers going to Habuka (ski resorts) and Kamikochi (mountain highland for trekking).
The room (at 8th floor) is generally quiet throughout the whole night.
You can have a spa bath at level 2.
Next to the hotel is a 7-11 that opens 24h.
Perfect ryokan in remote Japan. The experience was beyond expectations. The shrines in the area are superb! Everything was perfect and the hostess was very helpful. The food is amazing (but there's too much!)! The ryokan can be easily access by car from Nagano. It is a 35min scenic drive. I suggest nissan-rent-a-car right next to the train station. Everything went smoothly.
This is the perfect accomodation if you're planning to go to Hakuba for the snow, when you get back to Nagano the accomodation is directly across the road from the train & bus station. Very central location & extremely clean. The hotel staff were friendly & we were able to do laundry on-site. The room was a bit small but still bearable with our large luggage.
The rooms were very clean and comfortable. The rooms are smaller in size which is the norm in Japan which was fine with us. The breakfast was very good. It provided various options, whether continental, American or Japanese. The locations was ideal since it is in walking distance from train station and we walked to Zenkoji Temple at night and felt very safe.
Incredible location, feet from the Temple. Was blown away by the modern room at this Ryokan, incredible breakfast, inviting staff... what a trat for our final night in Japan. It's interesting , loaded with food choices, close to ski/board resorts (by rental car or train to a nearby town ), Obuse (onsen, Hokusai museum ), Snow monkey park
Good location close to train station so you can explore Nagano/take the bus to snow monkey park/explore the region; solo room suitable for 1 person, English instructions to use AC/comcast TV/bathroom; convenient lockers to store suitcases after check-out, kettle in room, gift drinks at vending machine, helpful staff
The location of the hotel is fairly close to the train station. Easy walk, or take a bus for a stop. 7/11 across the street is nice. Pretty close to the bars in the city. Loved that they had washer dryer in the building. Rooms were nice and clean. Free coffee and manga rentals, if you could ready japanese.
Super near to Nagano Station (just across a street 3min walk).
Hotel check in and out is easy, using a self help machine.
Hotel is clean, good amenities, room size is larger than most Japanese hotel. There's also a laundry room. Good service from staffs. .
Price is super affordable. Just perfect!
Very close to the station, one of the main exits is in front of it (turning left when you exit from the Shinkansen).
Staff were nice and spoke English.
Was pleasant to find out the final price was cheaper than what I had booked, by 1100 yen.
7-Eleven right next to the hotel
Near the Nagano train station. There're a lot of restaurants around. The room's was Japanese standard which had enough space but not spacious. They had pillow of choice and amentities at the first floor for guests.Western style breakfast was delicious.
Excellence location. Just 2 minutes from Nagano Station. From the East Exit, cross the bridge, go down the stairs, see a 7-11 and the hotel is next to it. Super convenient. Room is old style but very spacious which is a plus point in Japan hotels.
The complimentary breakfast was a pleasant surprise for us. We liked it a lot!
The hotel is a few minutes walk from Nagano station. There are many restaurants to choose from around the area.
It’s a relief to know that staff can speak English.
The location is very near the Nagano train station. It was an easy walk to the Zenkoji temple too.
The room was spacious, bigger than the 4 star hotel we stayed in Tokyo .
Breakfast is good too.
Nice hotel with a spacious room (by Japanese standards). Short walk from station. Helpful staff. Easy walk to restaurants around the station. Would stay there again.
The hotel served our purposes very well. It was centrally located to the train station and very quiet and comfortable for getting a good night's sleep.
