This is a very special destination with potential for a small luxury hotel, located around 10 minutes drive out of the village of Barisciano. It is a place to be if you seek peace and tranquility (there is nothing else but forest anywhere near), located at just above 1000 m above sea level, which makes it a welcome escape from the heath down in the valley. The hotel is - as the name implies - indeed a former convent, superbly renovated and still showing many features of the old purpose. The room was charming and warm, nicely appointed, with little sweet balcony overlooking the valley, though the style of the bathroom did not match the overall style of the room and hotel, and the fittings in the bathroom would need replacement from technical point of view. The breakfast was luxurious, offering local cured meats and cheeses, a collection of sweet pies and pastries, several types of (mixed) fruit juices, and coffees to order. Eggs can also be ordered. The staff was genuinely pleasant and helpful, they also sent us detailed instructions to reach the hotel well in advance. A short drive up the road from the hotel there is a beautiful little village of Santo Stefano, and if you continue onwards, you will get on to a great panoramic road through the beautiful Gran Sasso national park. The hotel is also half an hour drive from the city of L'Aquila, which is worth visiting - don't miss the Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio. (If you decide to go to the city, park for free at Napoli Terminal main bus station, from where a free of charge shuttle bus takes you to the historic city centre.)
The guests would, in our opinion, very much appreciate a fridge/minibar in the room. The hotel does, however, offers self-service style tea-room (coffee and tea), since the hotel (I guess because of its remote location and small size) does not have staff present after 8pm.
The house was well appointed, and clean, the location was perfect, and the parking space was just right. The kitchen was well supplied, rooms comfortable with plenty of bedding, and the bathroom shiny and spacious. Good lighting. Breakfast supplies were good.
Proximity to Rocca Calascio, a local restaurant and a short walk to 2 bars. The outdoor setting was perfect, and park nearby was a bonus.
Excellent view, beautiful old style apartment, location was great for seeing the fortress. 2 restaurants just a few steps away. Locals were very kind and welcoming. Breakfast at the hotel was good.
