Great city to visit if you want to hike up Gunung Ijen for sunrise. It's an icnredible hike, not too difficult, with some of the best views we have seen in all our 8 months travelling Southeast Asia. Banyuwangi was a very clean and friendly city with lots of cheap restaurants and we felt very safe walking in the evening. Stay at Snooze Ijen if you visit here!

There are plenty of lovely places to visit in Java and Banyuwangi is not one of them. However if you drive 30 minutes into the mountains there was some lovely homestays with views of the padi fields and dense forest which I would recommend.

Banyuwangi is one of the best place to be as it is not crowded like Bali or Jakarta or Bandung or even Surabaya. It is an underrated tourist destination which is more relaxing with much cheaper hotel rates and food. You can find Rumah Apung Bangsari, Bajulmati Reservoir, Baluran National Park, Savannah Bekol, Bama Beach, Kawah Ijen Sunrise, Blue Fire Crater, Jagir Waterfall, De Djawatan Forest, Mongrove Swamp, Mustika Beach, Pulau Meran Beach Sunset, Gandrung Dance and many more.
There are plenty of hotels and home stays and a heaven for culinary. It is the place to be and not in Kuta, Legian or Seminyak. Look for something different. Come over to Banyuwangi.

Banyuwangi just like a lite version of Bali and Java. Lot of thing you can do in here, hike mountain, got relax in beach, local food (mostly my favorite is pisang goreng), etc. There was lot of helpful person who helped me reach to my destination.
Wooden Kemiren is an economical, quiet and "feel at home" guesthouse. Imam is a wonderful host and his kindness is amazing. He can also organize tours for you, and thanks to him we had the BEST tour of Kawah Ijen, with the most amazing guides. Beyond that, the guesthouse is perfect to explore the beautiful, authentic surroundings of Banyuwangi (with a scooter Imam will arrange for you, naturally 😉). 100% recommended if you're looking for a budget option that will make you happy!
The bed is very comfortable, the bathroom is spacious and the water pressure is great, the AC works well, the place feels secure (there is a big sliding gate with a camera above it to close the property). The location is perfect, it's right next to a couple of delicious and affordable restaurants (Hanasta, SMJ, Surya..). The owner is very helpful and gave us great advice to enjoy our time in Banyuwangi. The wifi works very well also.
If you are a solo traveler who likes to meet some new friends, this place is perfect for you. The host was so fun, friendly, and helpful. You'll definitely enjoy having a chitchat with them. They made Banyuwangi feels like home :) also they can arrange some interesting trips for either solo or group traveler at affordable prices: Ijen crater trip, city tour, coffee making trip, beach trip, national park trip, etc.
Illira is a modern hotel with comfortable rooms, nice views over the forest towards the volcano or the sea, and a good base to explore some of the attractions around the Banyuwangi area. Staff were helpful and it was overall a smooth experience. For early check in there is an extra charge, though they did allow us to leave our luggage securely at no extra cost after check-out.

If you want crossing Bali this place also very near to Ferry Harbour, just walking distance across the road.
Beautiful hotel grounds, lovely swimming pool, restaurant served delicious food for dinner and breakfast. Very peaceful and relaxing ambience. My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful Bali massage at the spa. We would definitely stay again if we return to Banyuwangi!
Great place to stay before the Ijen trip or before heading to Bali. The owner picked us up from the train station (Banyuwangi Kota) and they provided a small but great breakfast. Clean, with air conditioning and fan. A lot of places to have a dinner around.
