Faside Estate, hotel in Musselburgh

Around 10 miles east of Edinburgh city center, the 14th-century castle on Faside Estate provides luxurious bed and breakfast accommodations.

We throughly enjoyed our stay at the Fa’side castle. It is definitely a unique experience to stay in a building with so much history. The location is excellent as well. It is a quick 20 min drive to the city of Edinburgh. I really enjoyed the hospitality offered by Sue and Ian. The breakfast spread in the room allowed us to start our day exploring the Scottish highlands and Edinburgh on the right note.

The Ship Inn, hotel in Musselburgh

Located in Musselburgh, within 1.2 miles of Portobello Beach and 5.4 miles of Edinburgh Playhouse, The Ship Inn provides accommodations with a shared lounge and a bar, and free WiFi.

Bit of a curate's egg of a stay this - excellent in parts but far more things going against it. Excellent first evening with a very friendly and attentive check-in and excellent drinks and food enjoyed in the restaurant. Yet after that things got increasingly worse... I had chosen The Ship Inn as our stay at the next door Ravelston House the previous month included cold early morning showers. I DO try to support local businesses wherever possible and try to avoid the 3 Premier Inns in the district. But at least their beds are comfortable and their showers are always hot. Good options for carry-out dining in the town, and also along at Portobello.

The Scotsman Hotel, hotel in Musselburgh

Overlooking Edinburgh Castle and Waverley Station, the 4-star Scotsman Hotel was originally built in 1905. This majestic, listed building was once The Scotsman newspaper.

The overall property is beautiful - stunning reception area, the Grand Cafe was equally as beautiful and the rooms were incredible. Everything was elegant and stylish but not at the expense of comfort.

Just very disappointing, nice looking pictures online but the reality is far removed. Probably ok for 4 lads looking for a place to crash and go into the city but the slightly more discerning amongst you will find this second floor property, complete with ghetto style entrance and stairways rather lacking.

Only ever gone for the horse racing but already looking at a long weekend here as it is only a short hop into Edinburgh and not too far from North Berwick, so good central point. I still need to see more of the old historic Musselburgh too.

I was born in Musselburgh and come to visit family.

I was born in Musselburgh and come to visit family. However we do activities while here. Musselburgh is a typical Scottish town with the road going through the centre of shops. Like many towns a lot are closed. It is pleasant with the river running through and many places to walk. It is close to the beach which is relatively clean. It is a good based to get into Edinburgh and a bus service which means you don't have to take the car. On the other side is the coast road which takes you to some lovely places. Alao a bit of history there.

The town seems a little run down in places but the racecourse and the harbour looked good. Train links to Edinburgh and the east coast. Close to A1 motorway and Edinburgh bypass. Has a good selection of supermarkets quite close together, Aldi, Lidl, Tesco and an Asda just off A1 motorway. Navigation around town fairly easy and driving through also.

    Needed transport into Edinburgh.

Needed transport into Edinburgh. Had to ask reception about this although had looked online before hand but obviously not familiar with the area. Nothing available about this in a folder. One of the receptionist was new and didn’t know the answer but another did. Musselburgh was ok on day we visited but just a small town. Nice walk along The Forth of Firth to Joppa and Porto where you could get a drink/cake or an ice cream.

    Gorgeous historical building and grounds.

Gorgeous historical building and grounds. You can get a bit lost around all the stairs, so be sure to ask for a ground or first floor room if you have needs and/ or like access to outside more. Room and bathroom was a little too hot and small but better than cold I guess! Just felt a tad claustrophobic in single wee room that was located through quite a lot of passage ways - good for some people but not for others. Just be sure to speak to the hotel about room needs. There was some sort of fan or something going on through the night, not sure if outside or other room. Hotel was a wonderland and staff are fantastic, kind and courteous. Due to the things I mention above I feel it was a little over priced. But I guess your paying for the up keep of such a beautiful historical building and its staff.

this was our final stay after 10 days in Scotland. The property and the rooms were super clean and well maintained. the staff were very accommodating and changed our dinner reservation on the fly (highly recommend making reservations if you plan to eat). The lounges were super posh and we had a nice relax after dinner. next time we would likely stay here 2 days the next time we’re in Edinburgh.

It was a great opportunity to stay in a renovated castle, with the use of two floors & the roof top which had excellent views over Edinburgh & Blackness Bay. The 7ft bed was really comfy & basically we had everything we needed including loads of breakfast & lots of hot water for a relaxing bath after a long day. Our hosts Iain & Sue were also lovely and made us feel very welcome indeed.

The view is just gorgeous here. The location is great for getting into Edinburgh on main bus routes. Beds were comfy and showers good. The living area was super comfortable and the dining area was great, with a well equipped kitchen. We travelled with 3 young children and had more than enough space and it was a lovely comfortable place to relax when we weren’t out.

What a fabulous place. Steeped in history with so many areas for guests to enjoy, both inside the hotel and outside in the grounds. This is the perfect location for a getaway to either just find a comfy sofa and read, or get out and about in Edinburgh, the Borders or the Pentlands. Good food, nice staff and very comfortable. We will definitely go back.

The best place in musselburgh to stay in. Very clean tidy and amazing host. Alice will make sure you’re feeling welcomed and at home. We took a large room with multiple beds. Amazing view. Great breakfast and very close from shops. If you like to walk it’s 30 min to the train station or down the street for a bus ride.

The cottage is twee however I was expecting that, its charming and in keeping with the period of the property. The garden is indeed beautiful and being in time for the tulips was an extra bonus. Great location for exploring Edinburgh and East Lothian.
