The chalet was in a great location, was dog friendly and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. This included, a great pub, The Steamboat Inn just a short walk away along the beach. The log burning stove kept us cozy even when the weather outside was stormy.

The property is very clean and modern throughout, love the Neon signs. Clean outside. Great rooms very big, fantastic bath in room for a romantic stay or a up lifting solo night. Room was clean, decorated to a high standard even if there was some noticeable improvements to some painted walls in the corridors up the stairs, it did not effect how we felt about the property, we loved how each room is named after historic places in and around Dalbeattie. Great big TV, when windows were shut up couldn’t hear a thing but we loved having ours open to hear the river and the quietness off the street. Great WiFi, staff were amazing, helpful and friendly. Breakfast was included and my gosh it was incredible. Extremely dog friendly which is a plus, I would 100% recommend to anyone and we would stay again!

Our room looked out over the beautiful grounds and was very comfortable. There was plenty of choice at breakfast and the staff were willing to make things if they'd run out on the buffet. We ate there twice in the evening, and the menu choices were pretty good. The receptionist managed to print a train ticket for us which was very helpful.

We had an excellent cooked to order breakfast. Our room was spacious, quiet and coomfortable. Hotel is well back from the main road so there was no traffic noise. We had a lovely cooked to order dinner on arrival and the staff could not have been more helpful.

The setting of the cabin was very nice, very rural and tranquil, with nice views (if weather had been clear).
Nearby towns very grim although rural route to Castle Douglas was very picturesque in the snow, if a bit dicey. Visited Kirkcudbright on Sunday which was much more pleasant but literally nothing was open. All shops and eating places appeared to be open only Monday to Saturday.
Ate at the Steamboat Inn at Carsethorn on Saturday evening, service was very friendly, food was ok but pricey for the quality, chef refused to cook steak well done which was extremely pretentious for a pub, and meant I didn't enjoy my meal. The room we were seated in was cold and lacked atmosphere, beer selection was very average.
There are no shops nearby so best to take provisions with you.
Overall our options were limited due to snow which is just bad luck, and we would have had lots more outdoor things to do if it had been clearer weather, such as walks on the beach to Southerness, but on balance would be unlikely to visit the area again given the better alternatives closer to home.

There is not very much to Kirkbean, but nearby New Abbey and Carsethorn are lovely. There is a fantastic place to eat in Carsethorn - the Steamboat Inn.
We visited most of the small towns locally, and absolutely loved Castle Douglas with all its gallery shops and places to eat.
Despite loving Simmer Dim, on our next visit we would stay further to the west.
