The room was lovely and overlooked the gardens. I was upgraded to a double room and so was pleased to have the extra space and larger bed.
The breakfast was lovely and much enjoyed. There is a lovely lounge which we were able to sit in during the evenings away from the bar and have a few nightcaps

Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.
Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

A wonderful city of charm, beuaty and history. Great for real ale pubs, don't miss Vennels Cafe or the Cellar Door restaurant, and many other small independent shops, restaurants, pubs and other traders.

Durham is a great city with lots of great places to eat.
Durham is a great city with lots of great places to eat. The Beamish museum is a short car journey away and is a great family day out. The cathedral and castle are an amazing visit to Durham's past. Expect to do a lot of walking, and most of it uphill. Durham like most historic city's has beautiful cobbled streets so good comfortable shoes are recommended.

Durham offers something for everyone.
Durham offers something for everyone. Even more for those who wish to explore the historic castle and Cathedral and surrounding streets. The city offers a comprehensive range of food and restaurants. It is accessible by road and rail.
If you find steep streets challenging there are still plenty of places to pause and browse or rest and eat or drink.
It is a beautiful city to visit.

A lot of pubs where the students go were scruffy and uninviting ( ripped furniture etc). Loved the areas around the cathedral, castle, town square and the river. Tour of castle was limited to 4 areas due to students living in the castle which we were not informed about when we purchased tickets. Thought it was a total waste of time going.
Some nice places to eat such as the Spice Lounge just off the square,Turkish kitchen near the cathedral and the Boat Club near the river.

Durham is a great place for a short break.
Durham is a great place for a short break. Plenty to do and see. The Cathedral and Castle were amazing. The walk along the river was lovely, especially when the sun came out!
Lots of places to eat. Would highly recommend.
Very nicely stylishly furnished property. Wild garden. Comfortable beds. Quiet, pleasant location. Very convenient for amenities such as shops, pub, take-aways and small supermarket and vet all nearby. Beautiful woodland walk (Aykley Woods) a few minutes away with amazing views of Durham Cathedral. 30 mins drive to wonderful beaches. Good bus connections or you can walk into Durham City Centre in about 25 mins. We had a few family members over to celebrate my granddaughter's 18th birthday. Handy for Durham University. Very dog friendly.
The hotel had the basic amenities. Everything was clean and well maintained.
Please note that I was here for longer than the average stay ( I was there for 14 or so days)
I cannot praise the staff highly enough. I had a couple of personal crises with family members and the staff helped me to navigate the situations very competently and professionally.
Aside from that, the staff were always receptive, helpful and attentive to any needs I had.
I spent 2 weeks at The City Hotel and really enjoyed my stay. The room was very spacious and beautifully decorated, with a large bathroom, everything in very good condition and very clean. The staff is exceptionally nice: manager and housekeeping person were always ready to help me and treated me very well. The location is perfect; right in the centre of Durham, and a short walking distance to Durham University. Wifi works well. Fully recommend.
I liked the young, warm, and friendly staff. My room was very comfortable; also, I ate most of my meals here and they were good. Durham, was a bit overwhelming for my first time, but members of the staff helped me get oriented so that I could walk to the train station and the cathedral. Both were easy enough to get to for anyone who is used to walking a bit. I would recommend this place.
Tradional hotel 10 minutes from the train station 10 minutes from the city centre located at top of a hill with great views of the city with outside garden for my dog.
After lots of research, the only decent dog friendly hotel in Durham City.
Stayed for two nights was in the area to get a new passport which is also only 15 minutes from the hotel to durham passport office.
Great small cottage - ideal location to explore Durham . Also within 20 mile of some nice quiet beaches for walks . I can also suggest local picnic area, with old railway tracks lovely place to chill less than 5 minutes away . Host was helpful and recommended local venues to eat . Great pub over the road .
The room was comfortable, well equipped and clean. The Continental breakfast was diverse, tasty and well presented. The pub is a short and pleasant riverside walk from Durham city centre and is also served by a pretty frequent bus service into Durham.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Twin bed room relatively small in size. There is parking space available to the hotel which is a great advantage because Durham can be quite tedious in terms of parking in the city centre. Location very convenient.
Great location and really friendly staff! It was a great value for its location in the center of Durham. Check in and check out processes were very smooth, and I was able to leave my luggage there for several hours after the check out time.
Quiet location close to the main road network (so easy to get to Durham., coast, etc.) with facilities that meant we could be comfy there when the weather was bad, make up picnics, and even cook an evening meal easily.
Our stay at Ushaw Historic House Hotel was simply amazing! The setting is stunning, the staff welcoming, and the breakfast exceptional. Highly recommended for a delightful getaway!
For the price, the hotel is kind of well located: a easily accessible bus that got to city centre of Durham and close to getting out onto A1. Shower is hot and strong.
The location to the city centre was great, the hotel rooms were stunning and very quirky, we celebrated our engagement New Years Eve was fabulous thank you
