The location is perfect - it is up in Pueblo Yumuni and therefore has amazing views (we could watch the sunrise from our terrace!) and is close (10min walk further uphill) to the restaurants and bars in the town. There is a big uphill climb to get to the hotel from Puerto Yumuni where the boat drops you off … this is completely worth it compared to staying in a hotel in the port but please, don’t make the mistake we did and bring large or heavy bags! Bring a small backpack and store your big luggage in Copacabana.
The room is spacious and comfortable and the owner Angel was especially kind and hospitable to us. Every morning he cooked a simple but delicious breakfast for us of eggs, bread, jam and fruits with coffee and always helped answer our questions about the island with patience and knowledge - he was a lovely calming energy every morning (the whole island feels like this!).
Recommend staying at least two nights on this magical island if you have the time … on our second day we took a boat from the port up to Challapampa in the north and hiked to the Incan ruins and then back to Yumuni via the camino Norte
- Sur, it’s a challenging (altitude!) but rewarding hike. We loved it here

Wonderful getaway!
Wonderful getaway! The island has no cars, but lots of donkeys and llamas. We were able to find a couple good places to have dinner and watch the sunset. We also were able to explore the island, walk to the ruins and the viewpoints and just relax. While walking up the first set of stairs, I took off my sling bag to take a couple layers off - the sun was out and I was overheating. I forgot my sling there and noticed that it was missing about 10 minutes later. I re-traced my steps and couldn't find it, so I chatted with a couple of the locals and showed them a picture of what it looked like. Within 10 minutes of chatting with the locals, my sling was located and I was able to pick it up a little further up the trail. I thought that experience spoke well of the locals and what they are trying to promote - an enjoyable, safe, relaxing experience. We will come back to the Isla del Sol on our next visit to La Paz.

The island is small but to hike all of it you need a full day or two. There's a beautiful sunset viewpoint at the top (pack some layers as it gets colder as soon the sun sets!) and some ruins scattered through. I didn't really get to check out the community itself; there were some restaurants close by that we just ate at instead.

You have a lot of restaurants around, although the next time I would go in a place in upper yumani because there you have the afternoon sun, and the best view. If you have big luggage with you, and you can afford 20 Bolivianos, I would recommend you to take a porter, who is carrying your bag, as it is going up pretty steep!
