Alofa, as its name suggests, is located on the beach and is near local villages. The accommodation is basic, but has its own special charm. Our local hosts, Glen and his sister, were very kind and helpful. While the menu options were limited, Glen's fried chicken and chips were quite decent. We really enjoyed swimming at the local beach where the locals swim. More luxurious resorts offer more comfort, but we felt we experienced the real Tanna staying at Alofa.

Becky and Glen were absolutely lovely, so helpful when we had an issue as soon as we arrived and great throughout the stay! The bungalows were right by the beach, spacious and had private bathrooms which was a luxury too! Definitely good value for money and really enjoyed! Breakfast was also included, simple but tasty and filling.

Great location. Veronika is an excellent cook. The price for transportation to the volcano is 3000 watts less than in the surrounding resorts. Veronika's husband took us to a local village with a Kava tasting and indigenous dancers. I highly recommend.

Very local experience. No 5 star comforts here, but that’s not what you come for. Hypnotic sounds of the ocean waves interrupted by the rumble of the volcano. Sleep broken by home cooked meals or an exciting genuine experience on a day trip. Walk to the local village. Nothing contrived, no pressure. Discover hidden heated rock pools. You decide. Walk up the hill towards the village for ‘signal’ if you really really think you need it.

As we were travelling on a budget and keen to meet the locals Alofa Beach bungalows was the perfect balance of comfort and friendly hospitality. Simple, relaxing and authentic looking bungalows with ensuite, running water and hot showers. The host were lovely and ready to help with whatever we needed. The food was nice. Pancakes for breakfast :) The bungalows are near a long stretch of coral strewn beach typical of Vanuatu and close to the local village. Perfect alternative to the resorts if you're after a more authentic experience.
