Straddling the border between Europe and Western Asia, Istanbul acts as an ancient crossroads of cultures, religions and civilisations.
Greek, Persian, Byzantine and Ottoman influences can be seen across the city. The mesmerising Hagia Sophia, for instance, stood for over 1,000 years as an ornate church before being converted into an Imperial Mosque, which it remained as for over half a millennia. And there’s Topkapi Palace, a lavish complex of halls, courtyards and terraces with commanding views over the Bosphorus Strait. Today, both structures are religious museums attracting millions of visitors every year.
The Blue Mosque is another glinting example of Byzantine-Ottoman fused architecture, with its domes, towering minarets and blue İznik tiles that adorn the interior. For a full view of the mosque’s design, enter through the crumbling remains of a Roman-era hippodrome in Sultanahmet Square.
Yet Istanbul’s oldest monuments could easily escape you. Deep beneath the ground are several hundred ancient cisterns, where water was once delivered via 20 kilometres of aqueducts from a local reservoir. The largest of these is the Basilica Cistern, which you can explore along raised wooden platforms.
Back on ground level, the Grand Bazaar will entice you with its maze-like network of craft stores and cosy teahouses. Go explore a little, before treating yourself to a Dürüm wrap on a street corner, or a mouthwatering meze in a bistro-style restaurant in Sultanahmet.

Our stay was very pleasant.
18 April 2024
Our stay was very pleasant. The price is very affordable for the quality of service and location. There is public transport nearby. Ideal hotel for singles and couples. The staff is very receptive and attentive.
The location of the hotel was excellent.
18 April 2024
The location of the hotel was excellent. It was a short walk to the tram stops which take you to the "old city". Buying a tram ticket was not easy requiring help from the locals. You can use a credit card to buy a ticket but only a MasterCard. Visa does not work? I really enjoyed the Hop-on Hop-Off bus for a three hour tour of the city and immediate surrounds. It was hard to identify where the bus stops. One thing to be remembered you can only buy a ticket online and not when you catch the bus. Istanbul is a great walking city and walking across the bridge to the "old city" was enjoyable. As a solo traveller the Galata MGallery Hotel provided recommendation to a restaurant that provided pick up and drop off to their location. The food in Istanbul is excellent.

It’s a beautiful city avoid going on holiday dates as the city is over crowded and traffic can be bad. But amazing city and the people very friendly and helpful. If you wish to move around by taxi use Uber as the fare is good. Free taxi drivers can take advantage as there is no meter in the taxi. If you don’t have Uber negotiate the fare before getting in the taxi.
Amazing city, so much to see.
16 April 2024
Amazing city, so much to see. Lots of great cafes, bars and restaurants. Worth buying a travel card that you can use on buses, ferries and metro. Be prepared for lots of walking if you want to see as much of the city as you can. Amazing shopping, much cheaper than other parts of Turkey.

16 April 2024
Istanbul is no longer a destination for budget travellers, it is quite pricey to eat out, drink wine or go to museums in comparison to places such as Spain or even parts of Italy. Visits to Hammams begin at about 65€. But is is still beautiful to walk around the city and go on the river, neither of which cost. The public transport is fantastic, very reliable. We found the Turkish people very friendly and polite.
Public transport was packed, especially trams.
16 April 2024
Public transport was packed, especially trams. Taxi drivers cheat a lot, especially when they realise you come from UK, USA, EU or from other rich countries. Speaking in English makes the prices jump dramatically. If possible, try to speak in Turkish to get better deals.
