About Wanaka

Including tips for the best time to visit Wanaka

Wanaka is a year-round travel destination that basks in the glory of its breathtaking landscapes, particularly its snow-capped mountains, alpine lakes and beech forests. The city is nestled in New Zealand’s Otago region, in the company of rolling vineyards, known for its Pinot Noir.

Famous for its outdoor adventures, this ski and summer resort town draws thrillseekers from all over the world. A trip to Wanaka in winters will reward you with vistas of snowy peaks and pristine ski fields. You can enjoy snowboarding and skiing at Treble Cone or head to Snow Farm, the only cross-country ski area in New Zealand. Get on a chairlift at Cardrona Alpine Resort, gaping at the unspoilt white expanse that surrounds you. Summers in Wanaka look completely different as Lake Wanaka turns into a launchpad for water sports, such as wakeboarding, fishing and windsurfing. You can also experience some other adrenaline-fuelled activities like motorbiking, hiking, skydiving and horse riding.

Following the Central Otago Gold Rush, the region hit a jackpot with another treasure – wine. On your holiday to Wanaka, set some time aside to explore beautiful vineyards and top-notch wineries. You can sample award-winning wines at Gibbston Valley Winery Restaurant or visit some tasting rooms in Cromwell. Head to Rippon Vineyard to sip on a few of the region’s oldest wines while admiring the scenic views from this lakeside vineyard.

The lake frontage with stunning views of the mountains and lake and choices of eateries catering for vegetarians Good parking but roadworks made it difficult at times to get around Would recommend the Big Fig for vegetarians and Charlie Brown for great crepes

We were amazed by the location near the lake with clean air, nice ambience in the Hotel Restaurant, with good food! I should have reserved 2 or 3 nights there. We booked 3 rooms all of us enjoyed it. Can swim, water activities and more.

Wanaka is the most beautiful place to visit The views of the lake and surrounding area are really stunning. It’s seemed a really peaceful place with just enough to do. Plenty of eating out places to choose from and many activities and places to visit. We will definitely be back.

A wholesome town just outside of Queenstown. I could've stayed here weeks. It was a great location to be based at for Roy's Peak Summit, more hiking and days spent by the lake. Bonus activity was a dinner and movie night at Cinema Paradiso. A really lovely town with a very live-able atmosphere.

Wanaka itself is a lovely spot.

Wanaka itself is a lovely spot. It was lovely without being too much of a tourist trap. The art gallery I visited was very good, and the two local restaurants also good and reasonably priced. The staff at the Thai restaurant were especially friendly and helpful. I wish I had stayed long enough to drive out to a few places from Wanaka.
