Christened ‘The Blue Pearl’ of Morocco, Chefchaouen is a city that’s instantly recognisable by the wash of cerulean all over.
The medina of Chefchaouen is the bustling old town area characterised by winding streets, decorative doors and walls painted in every shade of blue. Sip on some freshly squeezed orange juice from one of the many merchants around as you wander, pausing to shop for local handicrafts or snap a stunning photo. Its main square is the Place Outa el Hammam, dominated by the Grand Mosque and the Andalusian-style Kasbah, both of which date back to the 15th century. Offering a break from all the blue, the rust-hued Kasbah is home to lush gardens, an old prison and a cultural museum.
Nestled in the foothills of the Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen offers its visitors plenty of picturesque hiking trails. You can climb up to the Spanish Mosque for beautiful vistas of the blue-and-white city cast in a warm glow at sunset. Located near one of the medina’s gates is the Ras el-Maa – a tiny waterfall that serves as the city’s main source of water. Here, you can spend some time people-watching by the gushing spring as the locals gather to do their washing.

Chefchaouene is a beautiful mountain village with friendly people and just emerging in its tourism. We had the most incredible traditional hammam at Riad Cherifa. There was a sense of culture and tradition without the intensity of the big cities like Fes and Marrakesh. If you are visiting Morocco this was one of our highlights.

A ridiculously picturesque city with a quaint Médina to stroll though. An afternoon, dinner, one night and breakfast is likely enough time to explore the area. There are lots of hills/stairs so might not be ideal for people with mobility issues.

It is a more laid back place compared with where we had come from in Morocco ie. the bustling city of Fez -So we instantly felt more relaxed! We mostly enjoyed exploring by walking at our own pace in this pretty town in the mountains. We enjoyed views from rooftops and from the top of the Kasbah. We had good meals- one at the main square a restaurant called Twins which was great for people watching and to see the entertainers! Also the other restaurant we went to twice was called Cafe Clock where there was live music every night and the staff were very helpful and interested in chatting with us..

Picturesque town with lots of photo opportunities and hiking directly out of town. Smallish, but fun Medina which is full of steps and alleys you can get lost in, but easy to get out of as well. A bit touristy but souks are not pushy at all.
Scenic, but lots of tourists (including us!
26 February 2024
Scenic, but lots of tourists (including us!) most handicrafts for sale did not appear to be of high quality; however, some rugs looked quite nice but I didn’t have the capacity (room) to consider purchasing any.
