With its medieval towers, fortified 13th-century walls and winding, narrow streets, San Gimignano is the literal embodiment of charming rusticity. Popular with day-trippers from nearby Siena and Florence, this hilltop city has everything you could want from a visit to the beautiful Italian region of Tuscany.
San Gimignano has an abundance of eye-catching architecture, but the undeniable showpiece is its millennia-old towers that encompass the beautiful square of Piazza del Duomo. It’s here where you’ll also discover the Collegiata, a Romanesque cathedral known for its lifelike frescoes portraying events from The Bible and the life of the city’s patron saint, Fina.
The Tuscan jewel of San Gimignano is home to a variety of civic museums that showcase the city’s incredible history and majestic works of art. The Palazzo Comunale houses significant frescoes such as the ‘Virgin and Child’ by Lippo Memmi, but also gives access to the Torre Grossa (meaning big tower). You can take in soaring views over the Tuscan countryside from the top, but be sure to visit the small on-site museum before you leave. It’s also worth discovering the interactive experience at the San Gimignano 1300 museum, which features a faithful restoration of the city as it was in medieval times.
San Gimignano serves all the Italian staples you’d expect, with innovative ice-cream flavours served at Gelateria Dondoli and a native white wine in Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Traditional Tuscan dishes to try include wild boar or tagliatelle served in truffle sauce.

San Gimignano is beautiful but in itself it's a bit like a shopping mall, too nice, too clean. But it is a prefect place to visite Pisa, Lucca, Sienna, Monteregionni etc… It is a bit far for Montepulciano but doable for early birds. If one really want to visit extensively, plan 5 to 6 nights.

Great ice cream , beautiful piazzas, stunning frescos in the cathedral , lovely restaurants, historic cobbled streets, buildings, archways., dazzling views from the city walls and tower. Live music in piazzas. Great value city parking a short walk from historic centre. Our Hotel La Cisterna had a great location - easy to walk around and enjoy San Gimignano.

A very beautiful sight when driving among the Tuscan hills but a tourist magnet. The town itself is too touristy for my liking, it lost any originality or typical tuscan lifestyle due to the large numbers visiting. I prefer Siena or other towns or small villages near by where normal Italian life can still be seen. Expect lots of queues, guided tours and lots of souvenir shops.

San Gimignano is a beautiful town with lots of character. Unfortunately very popular with tourists and gets very busy between 10-4 each day. There are many car parks and coach parks for their arrival, and car parking is very expensive - 2.50euro per hour. The restaurants and shops in the very center of the old town are aimed at this crowd, with more traditional, tastier food tucked down side alleys. There are other more rustic towns and villages within the surrounding area which have more charm and a more relaxed/ peaceful experience
Such a beautiful hill town.

Such a beautiful hill town. Stayed 3 nights which allowed us to explore all of the nooks and crannies and cobblestoned streets at night. Once the tourist busses leave you have the town to your self. You also do not have to wait inline for the worlds best gelato! Don't miss the winery at the top of the hill.
