About Positano

Including tips for the best time to visit Positano

Pastel-hued houses impressed on hills and the serenading sea breeze make Positano a sublime vacation spot in southwestern Italy. Snuggled in the far end of the Amalfi Coast, this resort town unfolds a series of dramatic vistas that lend themselves as backdrops to its seaside restaurants and chic boutiques.

A road trip along the Amalfi Drive is undoubtedly the highlight of a holiday in Positano. Set out on a journey through the 48-kilometer cliff and sea-hugging route, and you'll pass by charming towns and coastal villages. Navigate the hiking trails of the Path of Gods to snap photos from vantage points overlooking the rugged landscapes and gleaming ocean. You can also spend some quiet time at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, whose tiled dome stands out from the stacks of vertical villas.

The best way to explore the splendour of Positano is on foot. Walk the narrow streets, which are chock-full of souvenir and handicraft shops, up to Spiaggia Grande – the main beach of this resort town. Here, you can find a sunbed underneath an umbrella and admire the scenery of the pebbled shores. For a relaxing stroll amid the sea and cliffs, head to Fornillo beach, located a few minutes away.

Positano is like living out of a post card.

June 7, 2024

Positano is like living out of a post card. It has a magical and peaceful vibe. Every picture you see is exactly what you will experience. One thing to note is you will walk a lot and there is lot of hills and stairs. Everyone was super friendly and welcoming.

Positano is definitely great for the traveler who is interested in taking gorgeous photos and picturesque views. It is also great for exercise as there is no shortage of stairs and walking trails to get from place to place. The town of Positano is quite small and very walkable from one end to the other and getting to other towns on the Amalfi Coast is very easy using the ferry. However, the Amalfi Coast in general is very expensive and overall the food scene is quite mediocre. The best meals we had were at Mediterraneo and Lo Guarrancino. Also the fried squash blossoms at Cafe Positano were surprisingly very good. Everywhere else we ate in Positano was just okay or bad. My stay was 5 days but I would recommend no more than 3 days for future travelers.

Stunning views unlike any other place.

Stunning views unlike any other place. Definitely recommend Positano as a base for your Amalfi vacation as it is in the center of everything and make other excursions easily accessible and so fun to explore after the day trippers are gone.

The beauty of the town is unreal, but it is built on steep hillsides which means that narrow roads and switch backs are not recommended for the unseasoned driver not used to such terrain. If you're not in shape when you get there, you will be by time you leave. There are many, many, many steps and paths around the town. It's very picturesque but also very demanding physically. Probably not the best town for the elderly or those with physical challenges. Taxi's are the best mode of transportation though there is a good local bus system however, busses only come by hourly, and because of the congrestion they are rarely on time.

The views of Positano are amazing . Everyone is really friendly and the food amazing . You need to be fit to get up and down the hills and steps. There were 3 really good restaurants very close to Florida residence and they were all good but our favourite was Saraceno D’oro had the most amazing pizza and lasagne and the staff were all really good

One of the most stunning places I've ever visited.

April 14, 2024

One of the most stunning places I've ever visited. Relatively unspoilt as it's difficult to reach and very expensive. Felt like an exclusive holiday location. Colourful buildings springing out of the hills, beautiful climate and STUNNING flora and fauna. All in all, one feels like one has been dropped into paradise on earth. Visiting in April is to be recommended as it feels neither too hot nor too crowded. I can't sing its praises enough. Travelling can be tricky if you have older people in your party - almost every route around the town involves steep steps. Spoilt for choice in terms of eating - we didn't have a bad meal. Shout out to Il Capitano (higher end) and Il Fornillo (slightly more reasonably priced). Recommend day trips to Pompeii and Vesuvius, the Amalfi coast (from Positano to Maiori), boat trip to Capri and Anacapri, and Sorrento.
