About Uluwatu

Including tips for the best time to visit Uluwatu

The majority of Bali, an island in the Indonesian archipelago, is covered by lush rainforest and rice paddies, but the same cannot be said for Uluwatu. In fact, much of the Bukit Peninsula – the island's southernmost tip where the region is based – is dry and rocky, littered with limestone quarries and cliffs that plunge into the churning Indian Ocean below. Despite the arid landscape, luxury hotels continue to sprout along Bukit's coastline to take advantage of those jaw-dropping sea views, and a steady stream of tourists come to see one of the island's most sacred temples.

Uluwatu's fame centres around Pura Luhur Uluwatu. This temple balances at the edge of a bluff overlooking the ocean. The structure, one of six directional temples on the island, was built from black coral rock and guards the island from evil spirits. Today, it also provides a stage for one of Bali's most enchanting experiences – a sunset kecak dance, where dancers dress in colourful costumes and perform scenes from Hindu mythology.

The rugged shores of Uluwatu create large, frothy swells that lend themselves to fantastic surfing conditions. This is one of the best spots to catch a wave on Bali, and a number of surf schools are on hand to teach you the ropes. After getting your fill of the water, sprawl out on Uluwatu Beach or any other of the area's pristine beaches.

We only visited Bingin Beach but loved the relaxed vibe. Sunset dinner at Abracadabra at Mu Bungalows was a great experience. Lakra spa was very good and would recommend their treatments.breakfast at Mensa at Elementum was excellent and best croissants I have had outside of France. Dont want the area to change.

It is a very beautiful and quiet place. A great option to relax and enjoy the view. There are also great options for food. For transportation, shared vehicles can be preferred or a motorcycle can be rented.

Bali is a very mad island.

5 September 2024

Bali is a very mad island. The traffic is like no other place we have ever been to. There seems to be no rules, there are millions of bikes everywhere, causing mayhem in traffic, fitting through the smallest of gaps, not only endangering themselves but you to. They ride on pavement if they seem like they will have to stop with no consideration to pedestrians. It is stressful and you're not even driving. Bali is a paradise lost really, it is very built up now and lots of the forest is being cleared for more hotels and villas for the tourist and it is already over crowded. Beaches we went to were sandy but really not that great. Many had strong waves to battle with and lots of unwatered rocks in your way. Too dangerous for young children and many adults. Surfers were ok as they could go out further on their boards. Shame but we are probably 20-30 year to late to enjoy the real Bali.

Uluwatu is beautiful and has a charming environment.

Uluwatu is beautiful and has a charming environment. However is a city of stairs, you need to go up and down eveywhere you visit, so be advise! Water is a real issue in this city, please check around this, we had to move because of water supply problems in our 1st facility and then found similar problems on a 2nd one. If you like yoga, Uluwatu has amazing studios to go practice. As well great places to eat and go shopping. Plan well your retourn to the airport, it took me around 3h being only 20km.

Uluwatu is becoming increasingly busy, but it’s also evolving into a fantastic destination with good dining places, lively venues for a night out, and beautiful beaches perfect for sunsets and surfing.

Great place to relax and unwind.

16 August 2024

Great place to relax and unwind. There are LOTS of stairs to get to any beaches so you want to be reasonably fit. If you tour around you can find some great locations for meals on cliff tops. Eating locally in the town, you will find great food for a fraction of the price. The beaches are great to check out. Sunset views are relaxing.
