About Paris

Including tips for the best time to visit Paris

As the birthplace of the Age of Enlightenment and a constant trendsetter in the world of fashion, Paris has cemented itself as one of the world's must-see cities. In a country known for exceptional food, style and culture, the capital delivers on all three counts.

The city is split into 20 districts (known as 'arrondissements'), which all display their own character. Le Marais (in the fourth arrondissement) is famed for its medieval, meandering lanes, full of traditional patisseries and chic boutiques. The area is also home to the iconic cathedral of Notre-Dame, considered one of the best examples of French Gothic architecture.

The seventh arrondissement is home to some of Paris' most famous landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, Les Invalides and Musée d'Orsay. Neighbouring districts also have plenty to offer, such as the famous Champs-Elysées, Arc de Triomphe and Opéra Garnier. In the centre of Paris you'll find the world-famous Musée du Louvre, home to tens of thousands of works of art, including da Vinci's 'Mona Lisa'. Further outside the city, but still worth a visit, are the mysterious Catacombs and the Château de Versailles.

Each French city takes pride in its cuisine and Paris is no exception, offering some of the world's best food. You'll find everything from three-Michelin-starred establishments like Restaurant Guy Savoy, to laid-back bistros like La Mascotte.

Offering fun for visitors of all ages, Disneyland Paris is located to the east of the city, in the suburb of Marne-la-Vallée and can be reached easily by train.

Traveling on the Metro was fun and easy, and it travels to all of the most significant Tourist Sites. The Hop on- Hop off Busses and Boats are an excellent way to get an overall view of the city. Check out speciality tours, ie. Black Paris for an in depth history of African Americans in Paris and/or Walking Tours of different areas.

This was my 3rd trip to Paris and I still love it, but it was expensive, and there were so many tourists, even though I deliberately came in the off season (it was spring, but early April, not yet the summer season). I always find it amazing to see so many iconic and historical sites. I was able to see the beautiful Notre Dame Cathedral exactly 3 years after the devastating fire, and it was humbling and hope-inspiring to see how much work had already taken place to restore this landmark. The photo exhibition was well done, and gave people a way of connecting with the story. It is always thrilling to see the Eiffel Tower, and as I was with a friend who'd never been to Paris, (and we were both coping with some health issues) we decided to do an open top bus tour, and this was a great way of seeing all the important, iconic sites without walking for miles, or trying to get on and off Metro trains and buses, but it is not for everyone, and you really need to get into the narrow lanes and walk away from the tourist attractions to find some great cafes, bars and places to enjoy a reasonably priced meal. Do hydrate!! Always hydrate! Paris water is very safe! If you plan to visit any of the galleries and museums do book tickets in advance, and don't try to do 6 hour days, basically 2 1/2 to 3 hours will be enough at one time, then you need to get outside and get some fresh air! Restaurants and cafes in museums tend to be very expensive and there are often queues for them.

The buzz, cafe culture.

The buzz, cafe culture. Enjoyed the choice of so many different places to eat and drink. the ease of travel on the buses using Google Maps. Montmatre was amazing with so many artisan shops and we loved our visit to the Musee de Montmatre.

Paris is the type of city where you need to stay in the center and walk to experience it. Traffic is really bad in the city and I mean really bad ! The architecture is incredible as are the museums. I've been all over the world and nothing compares. People on the street are always in a hurry, no time for talking. But the hotel staff and food places were more friendly than where I live in the United States.

The city is amazing with all the monuments, but they can get easily crowded. Beware of the pickpocketers, they are everywhere, and never let your guard down. It was a bad time to visit as the whole city was full of scaffolding due to the Olympics.

I was surprised at how clean the streets are in Paris.

9 April 2024

I was surprised at how clean the streets are in Paris. Free of garbage and debris. People were friendly and always willing to help. The Metro (public transportation) was easy to use to get to the tourist sites verses a more expensive option of using Uber or Taxi. Note, there was a bit of a walk to get to the Metro station. An upside to walking is you get to see the city neighborhood.
