About Le Mont Saint Michel

Including tips for the best time to visit Le Mont Saint Michel

Located off the coast of Normandy, the tidal island of Mont Saint-Michel is home to a population of just 30 sheltered inside the fortifications dating back to the religious battles of the 6th century. The unique nature of the UNESCO-listed island has led to many of its structures and fortifications being protected under France’s historic monuments act, including the 16th-century abbey standing proudly at its summit. Historically, low tide has brought many religious pilgrimages to the island, while today, Mont Saint-Michel is popular with castle-hunting tourists.

Despite the commune’s small size, there are many attractions both on the island and on the mainland. Wander along the ramparts to find historic stone buildings, boutique hotels and plenty of photo opportunities. Stroll the Grand Rue – a cobblestone pathway filled with restaurants and cafés – and stop at the Museum of Logis Tiphaine. During your visit, make sure to climb the grand staircases and observation towers to soak up the picturesque views of the abbey’s gothic spires. The mainland also offers sprawling views from Baie Du Mont-Saint-Michel and the Cancale fishing village.

Most visitors to Mont Saint-Michel take the train from Paris to Rennes before boarding the shuttle to the island. However, the commune is also accessible from the French capital via a four-hour drive.

I am glad I visited during the off-season, because there were less visitors on the Mont. It was still too crowded as far as I am concernd. Given the fact that 3.5 million people visit the Mont I expected it in a better state of cleanliness and repair. There were too many plastic bottles and other trash scattered around and along the main path to the Abbey some walls and gardens were in poor state of repair. Not very respectable for a a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Truly unique, historic location.

Truly unique, historic location. The Abbey was amazing and we used an excellent audio guide from VoiceMap. Staying overnight or getting across to the island early in time for a 9am Abbey entrance is essential. The island has very narrow pedestrian streets and lots of stairs and the crowds by the middle of the day are insane! ...you hardly have room to move. We left the island at noon.

The Mount (Mont) is an amazing place to visit, almost magical. But it is also very very busy, especially in the summer. I don’t like crowds, so a day trip was put of the question. Instead we booked a simple room just before the Mount. We saw the sunset, the sunrise and we visited the Mount at 8am, missing the crowds. It was brilliant.

An amazing placed to visit. Like going back in time and gets your imagination working of what it must of been like hundreds of years ago. The approach by road as you get a glance of mont st michael is breathtaking..

Le Mont Saint Michel is one of the top attractions in France.

June 30, 2024

Le Mont Saint Michel is one of the top attractions in France. While visiting it, it came clear to us why that is. It is a unique location. Walking to the streets give you an idea on how cities were like in the Middle Ages. Splendid location!

I cannot overstate how stunning Le Mont Saint Michel is. The architecture is truly one of a kind and the energy of the village is sensational, if you can, stay the night. A visit to the Abbey is a must.
