About Ronda

Including tips for the best time to visit Ronda

Built across a gorge on a sandstone hill, few cities can boast a setting as romantic as Ronda. Overflowing with Andalucian charm, the Spanish city is known for its winding streets filled with whitewashed houses and its breathtaking Puente Nuevo (New Bridge) which connects the city’s two sides across the gorge.

Ronda is often referred to as the birthplace of bullfighting and is home to a majestic 18th-century bullring, the Plaza de Toros. The neoclassical structure is the oldest bullring in Spain and was designed by Martín de Aldehuela, who also designed the New Bridge. If you stroll along the Paseo E Hemingway (Ernest had a long love affair with the city), you can stand on the traditional balconies that hang over the edge of the Tajo gorge. Elements of Ronda’s Islamic origins can be seen at the Arabic bathhouses just outside the city walls, and Mondragón Palace which housed the former ruler Abbell Mallek.

One of the best ways to blend in with the Ronda locals is to share their enthusiasm for food. Many bars and restaurants serve the regional speciality of chorizo rondeño – a spicy sausage infused with paprika and accompanied by crusty bread and crispy fries. You can also sample Arabic-inspired offerings such as pestiños (honey fritters) and other sweet treats like the yemas del Tajo (candied egg yolks) and rosquillas (donuts).

Very enjoyable.

Very enjoyable. Everything you want in a 5 minute walk. Spectacular views. Restaurants on the same street excellent for quality, service and atmosphere. The Alhambra was our favourite. If you want to have an average meal for 4 with spectacular views over the gorge, expect for an average meal with a bottle of wine and a gin and tonic for starters around 75 euros each.

There is so much to see and do in Ronda.

27 May 2024

There is so much to see and do in Ronda. It can be very sun intensive in the afternoon, so may I suggest sightseeing at the bridge and bullring before the tour buses arrive around 11am. There are many parks with shade and picnic seats, all with views. The Casa Museo don Bosco has a lovely terrace and garden with a small cafe, wine and snacks, on the side of the gorge with spectacular views. A short walk along the street takes you to a lovely park. Walking is so lovely in the evening and so many restaurant options.

Great vistas, culture and history all throughout the city. Best part is you can walk everywhere. If you want to avoid the crowds get up early. Remember to drink plenty of water, use sunblock and wear a hat.

Absolutely fabulous place.

12 May 2024

Absolutely fabulous place. So much history and so much to see. The views are incredible from so many spots. Just loved wandering the streets and finding the little cafes and shops. It’s a challenge in some hilly spots for those of us on the older side but I definitely could see myself living there.

A interesting place with breathtaking but rather scary views.

A interesting place with breathtaking but rather scary views. We were surprised at the amount of tourists around as we’d never heard of the place until recommended. 2-3 nights would be enough though and perhaps take in a walk. Found a fantastic little bar - with spanish guitar and flamenco - open mic. - 15 Arroba. Very friendly staff too.

29 April 2024

Provided info to open the key safe for the keys but no mention that there were 2 key safe’s & which was the one to use. Wouldn’t normally be a problem but the police would not let us park the car outside apartment block to even access the key safe No info on how to exit/enter car park on foot. Car park very tight turns and small spaces so not for a large car/ SUV without scratching paintwork No indication that there were 3 staircase’s and we needed “C” which was across the courtyard On arrival we found that a green glass dish on the kitchen island had a foot missing The living room shutter was jammed about 30cm up & wouldn’t open or close. The shutter in bedroom wouldn’t stay open as strap was broken The corner bath with shower had no shower curtain so bathroom floor would get wet There was a coffee machine but no pods supplied, we bought pods to find the machine turned on but wouldn’t dispense coffee There is a hole in the floor by the internal terrace door
