About Puerto de la Cruz

Including tips for the best time to visit Puerto de la Cruz

Located on the largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz is home to beautiful beaches filled with black volcanic sands. Head to Playa Jardin beach, the oldest resort on the island to find entry points for Atlantic water sports. Elsewhere, Martianez Beach is known for its famous outdoor swimming pool, while the beach itself is popular with amateur surfers. At the outdoor pool, you’ll find sea-water pools and resort-style restaurants suited to families looking for a relaxing day spent in the sun.

During your time in Spain’s Puerto de la Cruz, you’ll find many famous landmarks away from its volcanic beaches. Book a segway tour across the city to gain an insight into the history of the region and visit the medieval Church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia and the ancient stone castle of Castillo San Felipe. Alternatively, explore the city on foot to visit the penguins at Loro Parque Zoo or put on your hiking boots and journey through the picturesque hiking trails and waterfalls of the Parque Taoro. Here, you’ll be able to admire views of the Paseo de Colon and Mirador La Paz before ending your day spent in one of the many restaurants located in Plaza de Europa.

Beautiful Canarian style buildings in the 'old' town and lovely plazas. Plenty of good restaurants (we loved Arcon Tapas, Bambi Gourmet, La Taperia, Restaurant Herreria to name but a few). Easy access to other areas by buses. Good walking routes close by. Fantastic rugged coastline with crashing waves. Weekends can be a bit busy, even in winter (February/March). Loro Parque is a must.

Its peaceful and tranquillity although we did travel in February. Weather was hot with lovely breeze. Found a lovely little spanish burger bar Tui Burgers, very reasonably priced, friendly staff and lovely food. We hired a car as it was around an hours drive from villa to Siam Water Park and Mount Teide and 15mins drive to Lorro Parque. Both the Park & Lorro were busy even in February - would imagine they get overcrowded in summer months. Great place and would definitely go back.

This is not a bump bump music town it is for couples and families. There is a good contrast between old town and new. There is a mild surfer's beach at one end and a black sand beach at the other with the old town and harbour in-between. There is a good mix of shops and restaurants. It is flat walk right along the the water front. There are several parks to sit and relax in. La Fragata at the old harbour is a great pub that also does coffee.

There are beautiful views, with beautiful black sand beaches and banana trees. The ocean from the north side of Tenerife is way too aggressive 🥲 with great waves and no possibility to swim. The only tourist attraction is Loro park. Siam park and whale watching is on another side of the island. Though the prices for accommodation are pretty acceptable here.

I first visited P de la Cruz in 2005.

7 February 2024

I first visited P de la Cruz in 2005. The town has become much more prosperous & international in the intervening two decades with many well known retail brands now well established here. End of January/early February must be popular because we found the town crowded at every hour of the day or night. However, it is spotlessly clean and the new floral Avenue from the shopping centre to the Harbour/seaside is a welcome addition. I also appreciated the attractive new statue of the fisher girl selling her wares with a basket of octopus balanced on her head. (see photos). Staff in cafes are polite and friendly. Prices are reasonable. Food appears to be only average but we ate well at the Semiramis hotel. The weather is idyllic; never too hot and often a fresh breeze blowing. Small wonder Tenerife is known as the Island of Eternal Spring. Puerto, on NW coast of the island, receives a little more rain than other parts but has been suffering from a lack of precipitation in recent years. However, the abundance of colourful vegetation hasn't suffered unduly & the Botanic Gardens in La Paz are a shaded paradise of exotic greenery. Very restful & well worth visiting. (see photo of the Lily Pond there). Finally.. did you know Agatha Christie was a resident here in 1927? (See photo : a selection of her book titles on a flight of steps in the old town). Every 2nd year there's a festival of plays and films in her honour...the centenary year is now only 3 years distant! Jane Skinner Bishop's Stortford, Herts. UK 7 February 2024.

5 February 2024

This is not a beach resort even though it has a few black sand beaches. It is primarily a resort for enjoying the superb surroundings, views and climate. It is pleasant to stroll around the resort. Bear in mind that it does rain here quite often which is why it is so green and verdant.
