The location was perfect for me, 10 minutes walking from the train / bus station and on top of a light hill, so the view from our room was incredibly nice. (This also means that if you are going on foot you have to walk uphill, no big deal for us, but if you have heavy luggage it could be difficult). Both dinner and breakfast were japanese-style, but not too traditional on both taste and texture (I say this as a plus, because my partner is not keen on super traditional Japanese cooking and still managed to eat most of his breakfast). We were also offered non-meat options beforehand, which is great! The building is a mixture of western and japanese styles, so for example the common room has high tables and chairs and a parquet, while the rooms have tatami. Everything was lovely, the common area had a beautiful terrace with a view, our room had a small balcony with outside seats and a private onsen bathtub. The owner is a very nice man and we chatted during dinner. We speak good enough Japanese, so language wasn't a problem, but the owner also speaks good enough English and is very helpful. We had free access to coffee, tea and water from the common room and two complimentary water bottles in the room.

So many beautiful details everywhere on the property and the rooms like ikebana, face mask, private dining room for everyone, all electricity outlets covered with different prints, unique furniture..So much love and thought was put into everything. The staff and the owner went the extra mile eg special drop off time, adjusted breakfast time just for me..The breakfast and dinner were out of this world delicious.

There is an on-site restaurant, plus free private parking and free WiFi are available. The ryokan provides mountain views and a sun terrace. The open air bath was incredible with a picturesque view of the mountains. It looked exactly like the photos and was nice to be away from the town up in the hills. The room was huge and extremely comfortable with nice furnishings. We liked how there were two vanities. The staff were very friendly and we enjoyed the Japanese style dinner and breakfast.

Surrounded by beautiful nature, the lovely little Japanese inn Sanso Tanaka has 1 outdoor hot spring baths and 2 indoor ones, which guests can use privately without reservation. One indoor bath boasts views of Mt. Yufudake. Amazing ryokan in Yufuin! A great combination of traditional architecture and modern comfort. Owners were a very nice and helpful couple. They had resources prepared in english to facilitate a smooth check-in and guidance for the stay. There's a wide selection of yukatas to choose from. Basic amenities (e.g., rain coats) can be bought at the reception if you need something. The ryokan has 3 private onsens, 2 indoor and 1 outdoor. We tested all and enjoyed them thoroughly. There is no reservation system; you just take a sign during bath times and put it on the door. Onsens are available in the morning and from afternoon until evening. We always had an opportunity to use them when we wanted to. The bento boxes for breakfast were amazing; they had a little bit of variation each day. They even got me special ones without fish. We arrived a bit early but the owners allowed us to check-in ahead of time. Additionally, bicycles are available free of charge which is great for exploring Yufuin. Bicycles are only available during check-in time; we didn't notice initially and asked in the morning once and the owner still obliged and gave us the keys. It felt impolite when we noticed but we were very grateful!

Owner provides transfers between Ryokan and Yunohiro Station makes the stay more enjoyable and less stress.

Surrounded by peaceful woods, Nihon-no-Ashitaba offers classic Japanese-style accommodation and natural hot spring baths. Guests are welcomed with a complimentary drink at time of check-in. JR Yufuin Station is a 7-minute drive away. Amazing stay, with multiple private hot springs. Room was as big as a house, very comfortable. Best meal we've had in Japan, and vegetarian made for us.
