We stayed in Pontresina for 5 nights in early October.
We stayed in Pontresina for 5 nights in early October. It is a charming town. We arrived by train, and Pontresina makes an excellent place to stay if you want to experience the Bernina Express train journey.
The railway station is within walking distance of most of the accommodation, but it would be a struggle with luggage. Our hotel had its own vehicle for transfers, I think most hotels offer the same.
When we were there (early October) most of the other travellers were Swiss. While there were plenty of options in terms of restaurants, most visitors were outdoor/ nature loving folk who went for a quiet meal in the evening and then got a good night’s sleep. So the town was very quiet at night, which suited us perfectly.
A pass for local transport: trains/ busses/ furnicular railways/ cable cars was included in our hotel tarrif, and this was fabulous. From Pontresina we walked to St Moritz one day and enjoyed the St Moritz cable car, then returned to Pontresina by bus. On another day we caught the train Bernina Diavolezza and the cable car to view the Morteratsch Glacier. We used the “Komoot” app to find other hikes.

It was a starting point for the cross country ski race.
It was a starting point for the cross country ski race. It is easily accesible by train which is a big plus. There was a place to spent some time before start. It is also a nice starting point for many cross country ski routes in Engadin.

Pontresina is just one of many pretty villages in the upper Engadine, which is among our favourite places in Switzerland because of its elevation, climate, sights and attractions. It is not as touristy and overbuilt as St Moritz, yet has all the amenities to make for a pleasant stay: choice of accommodations and restaurants, coffee shops, retail, guides and outfitters, etc.
It is centrally located with easy access to the valleys of Pushlav, Bergell or the lower Engadine by car or public transport. A great place for those who love nature, mountains, beautiful scenery, amazing outings by rail or post bus, superb fall colours, hiking and mountaineering in summer or skiing in winter. Numerous chairlifts, cable cars and mountain railways in the region offer easy access to spectacular views of the southern alps.

Pontresina is well situated, right on the Bernina Express line and basically near the confluence of the Bernina and Inn rivers, with easy access to the valley of the Inn and the valleys to the south going to the Italian border. Make sure to stay 2 or more nights and get the Engadin card that includes Bergbahn (mountain trains, e.g., trams, funiculars, chair lifts, gondolas and cable cars) so that you have access to all the wonderful high mountain areas in the region at no additional cost. In summer it is hiking paradise, in winter a winter sport hub, and in the fall is ablaze with golden larches.
Lovely location,ice-capped mountains all around.Close to train station and bus stop.A bank for currency exchange and restaurant.Special mention Restaurant Bundi.Free pick up from station.Warm and welcoming reception, and very helpful staff.
Hotel very spacious overall, lots of open spaces.
Room well-appointed,large with all ameneties,even a balcony.
Pontresina is a much better place to stay than St Moritz.Would recommend this wonderful hotel to everyone.
The Hotel is amazing with beautiful ddcorations. The staff is always friendly and very caring. They get to know your likings and are so forthcoming.
Every afternoon you can get cake and tea in the salon. The Spa facilities are very nice and clean. The food is amazing. I really liked how the owner Mr. And Mrs. Walther regularly came to ask if everything was in order. They are super friendly to dogs and even prepared a bed for our dog.
The Hotel combines the architectural beauty of a 19th century palace hotel and the taste and carefulness of the family that runs it. It does make a difference when the owner personally welcomes you while you take an apero in the hall of the hotel. My tastefully designed room had a wooden floor (🙏🏻) and was obviously recently renovated. The Spa is nice and the dinner was delicious. I will come again.
Everything! This family hotel is fantastic. The staff are lovely and very accommodating. The service was highly personalised. Breakfast was tasty. The rooms were nice, clean, and cosy. The spa facilities of the neighbouring Walther Hotel were lovely. They even provided a dog bed, bowls, and treats. I very much recommend staying here.
Old world luxury hotel experience with modern amenities. A large staff will take care of all your requests, which even takes a little bit of getting used to in today's DYI world. Highly recommend the multi-course gourmet dinners at the Grand Restaurant.
the hotel itself is quite nice. they were very welcoming and extremely helpful in assisting us and picking us up from train station. they gifted us bread and cookies as well.
the restaurant is very good if a bit pricey.
breakfast was very good.
Spa is a nice feature. Breakfast was okay, rooms are clean and everything mostly works. Overall it's ok for the price point, but I wouldn't stay here if I were planning on spending much time at the hotel during the day.
The position of the hotel is magnificent, it is placed in a valley with an amazing view. The room was nice, I stayed in the dormitory and the beds were big an comfortable. Also, the staff is really kind and welcoming.
Classic and comfortable property in Pontresina, a convenient and attractive town to explore Engadine. Excellent hospitality for a larger hotel. Loved “street market evening” on Thursday.
They're very honest about the closed facilities, they even made this specific property. It's a nice hotel, clean and everything was fine. It's right in the middle of the town.
Super comfortable, well equipped apartment, centrally located in Pontresina (we just went out every morning for a walk to be greeted by the ibex in the Steinbock Promenade!)
We had a lovely room with lovely views of the river and mountains. The hotel is in a wonderful location. The breakfast was excellent. Wish we could have stayed longer.
good location at the edge of Pontresina and great access to the good slopes in the Bernina pass. Hotel is quiet with good facilities and a great restaurant. lovely staff.
Remote, secluded, but easily accessible by car. This place was quite a gem of a find! We are family of 3 with a dog. Hotel and breakfast were perfect for our short stay!
