The walled town of Alghero on Sardinia’s west coast has an altogether more down-to-earth vibe than the more exclusive Emerald Coast on the opposite side of the island. In fact, it feels more Catalan than Italian.
The seafront walls and defensive towers surrounding the historic center were actually built by the Catalans in the 16th century, and many residents still speak a dialect from that era. However, Sardinia has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the Nuraghe di Palmavera stone dwellings outside the town are evidence of this. Another nuraghic site is Anghelu Ruju, near Alghero Fertilia Airport.
South of the airport is sandy Maria Pia Beach which continues all the way to Alghero harbor and is lined with beachfront hotels, bars and restaurants offering tasty seafood, including local lobster. Boat trips leave the harbor to Neptune’s Grotto along the coast. Next door is Nereo Cave, supposedly the largest Mediterranean sea cave and a popular diving spot.
Also worth visiting are the pedestrian streets of the old town, packed with shops and sidewalk cafés. Also here are the 16th-century Palazzo d’Albis and the cathedral with its mixed architectural styles.
The Alghero accommodations on Booking.com include 5-star hotels with pools, cheap B&Bs and apartments with parking.
Visited with small children, 5 and 8 for 5 nights.
Visited with small children, 5 and 8 for 5 nights. It was great to be exploring the beaches, lovely narrow streets of the old historical city centre and lovely italian cuisine in general.
Don't fully rely on public transport or boats to Grotta di Nettuno / Cappo Caccia - they may not work all days, or can just take you around the bay without the option of getting of. Would recommend to rent a car to venture to nearby areas on your own schedule and you may see more.

Well worth a visit, Beautiful old town with mazing little restaurants and coffee/gelato stops , Fabulous boat trips. Very friendly city and all the locals were most welcoming and friendly. Will certainly be back.
Only negatives would be the taxis ( avoid if possible) I like to get a taxi to aiprport when Im leaving a city so that there are no hiccups / delays . However in the end I took the bus for €1.50. One taxi driver was looking for €40 and insisted I called him rather than the company he worked for.
Avoid main restaurants in the old city. Most are over-priced and from what I could make out most are run by the same person. But its hard not to fall in love with this amazing city

Really liked Alghero .
Really liked Alghero . The quaint old narrow streets in the town . The long prom walk . The port. The old buildings. People very friendly apart from the guy in the tourist office who was arrogant and rude. We could not get into some of the Churches as there was work going on.

Alghero is a lovely place to visit with its historical old town of a maze of pretty cobbled streets consisting of multiple restaurants, shops and wine bars. Lovely marina where you can take boat trips from. Lots of nice restaurants outside of the old town, would recommend Rafel restaurant and bar situated on the beach for that special dining experience.

Fabulous place which exceeded our expectations.
Fabulous place which exceeded our expectations. Safe, plenty to do and lots of good places to eat. I would recommend hiring a car. We did from 'Casual Van'. It was great to see the surrounding coast. Really stunning scenery. Would recommend Regina Margherita and La Bottega for meals and Jo'pier. We got to and from the airport by taxi which we pre booked.
I loved the stay at Alghero Sunrise. The location is great, just near the historical center and still in the quiet environment, 7 minutes walking down the hill to the main bus stop - bus from the airport, beach bus (there is one more bus stop closer- in front of the church nearby) and buses ARST to the other locations. The room has was nicely designed and clean and towels changed every 2 days, WiFi and air-conditioning worked perfectly, the owners were very polite and helpful. Next to the hotel is one small spagheteria, which I recommend too.
The host is super kind! She doesn’t speak English but translates everything to English for you to understand.
The apartment has all the facilities needed when on holiday, and is super clean! The host welcomed us with Sardinian delicacies on the table, which were delicious btw :)
She also gave us some tips where to go and where to eat! And that is really helpful since there are hundreds of restaurants to choose from.
Overall i would definitely recommend this apartment to anyone traveling to Alghero. 10 out of 10!
The house is incredibly clean, fragrant and well decorated, located in the historic center of Alghero.
Daniel was extremely kind helping us with check-in and check-out and recommending tours, beaches and restaurants. He also welcomed us with typical Alghero drinks and snacks.
Maria Pia beach surprised us with its fine white sand and paradisiacal blue sea, this beach is approximately 35 minutes walk from the house.
We had a very pleasant 5 day stay and we recommend this accommodation to everyone.
Hostel is at a great location, 5 min walk from bus station where bus from and to airport stops. Also too close to city center ,old town and beach road. Everything is walkable at Alghero. There is no reception so after check in at a nearby hotel you get your card and have access everywhere in hostel. 6 bed dorm is big enough with comfortable beds and excellent wi fi. Clean and safe. Bathroom inside room is a plus. There is a fridge and a kitchen at the common area.
Caterina and Mario were so welcoming from the start we felt like we were at home in Sardinia. The room was so cosy and clean with some beautiful touches. Breakfast was gorgeous on the balcony and Caterina made us whatever beverage we wanted. She gave us great tips on restaurants and places to visit around Alghero and gave us an umbrella to take to the beach with us. They were so kind and honestly felt like family! Couldn’t recommend this bed and breakfast enough.
Great central location, room and bathroom (very spacious) new & clean, most beds on floor vs bunks, 24 hour assistance at the sister hotel (Hotel Catalunya) 4-5 blocks away including luggage storage, beach umbrellas and bike rental. Close to: buses, nightlife, waterfront, sunsets, cafes & restaurants, grocery, historic district. Many buses to airport, beaches, Stintino, Neptune’s grotto etc.
Great location for this family-friendly low-rise accommodation. The pool and apartment block, although older, are clean and well maintained. The apartment was comfortable and had all we needed for our week's stay. Bus into the main town goes past the building and you can also hire the electric scooters everywhere. We wouldn't hesitate to return on our next visit to Sardinia.
A very convenient and fully equipped appartement located at the border of the historic centre of Alghero.
A super nice host who's welcoming you and is very fast in his response to your questions.
We would recommend this place as base for your trips to several beaches and places to visit!
Also take part of the Italian pasta course, the family is offering....
Ciao!
The place was very clean and had everything we needed. Claudia and her mom were amazing hosts and gave us the best tips of places to eat around the city, and helped us decide the best itinerary for our next stops in Sardinia. Highly recommend this place! Would stay again; in fact, we tried to go back on our last night, but unfortunately, they were fully booked!
Perfect accommodation for our stay in Alghero, we loved every detail of it:
the location, the facilities, the cleanliness, the beautiful room, the tasty breakfast,
as well as Michelina's great efforts to provide the best services - we were truly impressed, she is one of the best hosts we have ever met in our trips.
Thank you! 🧡
The owner was really nice. We arrive at property at midnight and she waited for us with a smile and welcome food and drink(traditional Sardinian pastries and water and juice). The location was great. We walked to Alghero city. Also the terrace is big. Apartment is big / great for family. And in apartment is everything you need.
I spent 14 nights in Alghero with my family (2kids). Casa Lido is very nice apartment close to the beach and city center. There are 2 supermarkets in the neighborhood. Perfect parking possibility enabled us to have easy departure/arrival with car when we visited other beaches around north-west part of Sardinia.
Nice hotel for short stay in Alghero. Hotel and rooms are a bit of old fashioned, but clean and properly equipped. Some rooms with the view to the sea, however it's partial view only. Good and relatively reach breakfast when compared to other places in Italy. Parking available. Staff is very helpful.
I spent 10 days with my family on a road trip across Sardinia, and this apartment was the one that surprised me the most. It was spacious, clean, and had excellent communication with the proprietary Beniamino. I will definitely come back and recommend it to friends on future trips.
It is one of the best places we've ever staid in Italy (and we've seen most of Italy). Renzo and his family are doing a great job maintaining one of the cleanest and prettiest places you could chose in Alghero. It's close to every place you want to visit. Totally worth it!
The hotel is right on the beach and the food was very good. Our toddler eat everything without a problem. Also, the stuff made all our requests possible. The view is ok. The room is spacious.
The staff was so helpful. This BnB was very basic but the staff went out of their way for us. It was like staying with family. Sardinians are the kindest, friendliest of all the Italians.
Outstanding hotel perfectly situated near the old section f Alghero. Rooms are tastefully decorated, quiet and comfortable. The staff are amazing and always ready to help. A++++++
Very close to the beach and a ten minute walk to the Old Town. Air con was the best we experienced in Sardinia. Staff we friendly and rooms were large.
