Riversong, hotel in Ohakune

Offering a garden and river view, Riversong is situated in Ohakune, 38 km from Mount Ruapehu and 34 km from Turoa. Boasting a shared kitchen, this property also provides guests with a picnic area.

Andre & Sonja were lovely, friendly hosts. Easy to talk to and, from what we could see, both had been keen cyclists/runners in their younger days. The directions to their home were easy to follow and, as they were not going to be home when we arrived, they had left clear instructions on where we would find our room/bathroom taped to ranchslider. We arrived to house lights on and the lounge fireplace and fireplace by our bedroom lit. As the forecast was predicting snow, the fires were certainly welcome. Andre & Sonja's guest room and facilities are in a seperate wing off their main living area. Our bedroom was cosy and the bed very comfortable. There is a creek that runs past the back of the house which is very relaxing to listen to as you drift off to sleep. Absolutely perfect place to stay for the skiing fraternity, cyclists etc.

We stayed in Ohakune to ride the Old Coach Trail - a walking and cycling trail that runs between Ohakune & Horopito. It's a grade 3 trail and we rode it both ways but most people get a shuttle to Horopito and ride it one way. Lovely trail with thick bush, viaducts and views to Mount Ruapehu. There are a reasonable number of restaurants/cafes in Ohakune, considering it's a small town. We had dinner at Osteria, which was OK. Utopia had nice coffee and pastries.

Easy walk to shops nice parks and playground for kids. A little skateboard area. Great shops for wandering in summer and skiing shops plus information available. Restaurants and supermarket handy. .nice people too. Loved it. Ate at the family friendly The Cypress Tree. Good food. Had a choc eclair at the Eclair shop. New world supermarket had everything you could need. Good road to Turoa ski field.

We re-visited the Chocolate Eclair shop after a number of years, now under new management, eclairs still amazing. Nice town with the accent on it's access to the snow fields. In the winter season the town would be buzzing but in April very quiet. Our fish and chip dinner was very disappointing in spite of glowing internet reviews, wouldn't recommend. We should have asked a 'local'

Really enjoyed our dinner at Osteria - Italian, lovely atmosphere, attentive staff, delicious food, very popular. Enjoyed a 3 hr return walk into the Hapuawhenua Viaducts along the Old Coach track (need vehicle/shuttle to get to start) and great area for mountainbiking. Went for a drive up the mountain road with awesome views, and a stop at a nearby waterfall. Then a 1 hr native bush walk ( Mangawhero Forest walk) where friendly little fantails and robins flew about and you could hear the whoosh of wood pigeon high in the trees. Dinner at the PowderKeg - a pub setting with dining area. Again, lovely food and within walking distance of accommodation this time. Good supermarket in town and looked around shops (some vacant as is the case with many small rural towns now) and lovely playground/walkway at the Carrotland Adventure Park, then morning cuppa at the Chocolate eclair shop before departing town.

We went to Ohakune to walk the Tongariro Alpine crossing.

We went to Ohakune to walk the Tongariro Alpine crossing. it's a 35/40 min drive to the car park. We didn't arrive until the afternoon, settled in then went out for dinner. Hiked the next day and chilled the day after which we were very glad to rest as the hike for incredible but my body was a bit sore the next day!! Left after checkout on the 3rd day. The best place for dinner was the Cyprus tree (book as it getting really busy) it was one of the pricier places we ate but definitely worth it. Osteria was nice too, cheaper, and had more of a pub feeling. We went to the Mountain Rocks cafe for breakfast- it was cheap and cheerful. The coffee was very nice. we had food off the menu but they had lots of cabinet food which looked nice too. Savoury and sweet treats. Ohakune is a very small town, it suited us perfectly as we had activities to do. Lots of small walks and a waterfall too.

Very likely quieter in Summer than Winter.

Very likely quieter in Summer than Winter. Lots of walks of easy access, some without a car. Lots of trail rides (MountainstoSea). Enough shops + New World (small version of it!) and heaps of cafés and restaurants make Ohakune an easy town to venture from in Summer. Large selection of accommodation, from backpackers to chalets to Powderhorn Chateau.

It’s a flop and drop chill out pad. In a quiet, secluded location ( you can hear the goods train in the morning). The chalet is ideally placed for adventure and exploring. It is cosy and comfortable if you need to take a break from motels/hotels. It has all amenities ( no ironing board, if that’s a must) We loved the location and the property was nostalgic for us as we have owned and cherished such pads in our own family. It feels like a friends and family accommodation.

A wonderful place to stay, the cabin was beautiful, warm and cozy. We loved the fireplace and the spa pool at night with no light pollution the stars were bright and beautiful. The country surrounds and gardens are stunning. A great location, very close to Ohakune township, a few minutes drive. A delicious and beautiful breakfast served daily, thank you Dani for being a warm welcoming host. Highly recommend, we can't wait to come back and stay!

due to rain (traveling by motorcycle) and a failed attempt at the river canoe trip, I ended up staying at the Hobbit for way longer than anticipated, but my stay was fantastic and comfortable! Michelle who runs the lodge is a wonderful person and puts alot of effort in to keeping the lodge clean and comfy for guests! I would def recommend staying here if you are coming through Ohakune!

Honestly it was incredible... ohakune had a lot to offer but coming home to this bach everyday was a highlight for my tribe. We all had great sleeps, great eats and awesome water pressure. The games and tech available ensured everyone was able to wind down at the end of the day. The outdoor space was used every night, perfect view with all the green around us and gorgeous sunsets.

Great value for money. Everything you need for a self-contained stay, clean, and warm too. Very ‘old-style NZ bach’ feel, with older furnishings and cheap crockery, but proper kitchen & fridge was a real bonus when you don’t want to spend money eating out. Quiet location. Handy little "drying cupboard" where the hot water cylinder is located.
