Known for beautifully undulating coastline attracting a wealth of wildlife, laidback Monterey is set on a small peninsula. Though now more famous for Monterey Jack cheese, it was once an important sardine fishing town. Some ex-canning factories now house galleries and shops on a street renamed Cannery Row after a novel by John Steinbeck. A museum and his former home in nearby Salinas can be visited.
The fantastic Monterey Bay Aquarium houses a fascinating range of local sealife, which is so prevalent here that you can often see seals basking on craggy beaches, or sea lions roaring away under piers in Fisherman’s Wharf. Whalewatching tours also depart from here.
South is the Monterey State Historic Park, site of historic buildings including Custom House and the Old Whaling Station with a path made from whalebone. To the east are a couple of Monterey hotels on the beach on Booking.com, and there are also several Monterey hotels with indoor pools.
Right by Monterey Peninsula Airport is one of the city’s 7 golf courses, and there are 3 golf courses near the Laguna Seca Raceway.
Whether you’re here for the Monterey Jazz Festival, or for driving the Big Sur Pacific coast road to the south, if you’re staying with kids, don’t forget to check out the Dennis the Menace Park.

Monterey was lovely, a great place to walk around and lots to see and do. We wish we had stayed longer. And it would also have been good to go to Carmel if we had stayed longer.
The Dust Bowl brewery down near the harbour was great. (It's in between a main road and a car park so doesn't look brilliant from the outside but worth a visit!).
The Fieldwork brewery on Munras Ave is also worth checking out, but only on a sunny day as it's outside seating only!
The aquarium is supposed to be one of the best in the world but we were fairly underwhelmed.

The centre of the town is rather tacky & expensive but the National Park at Point Lobos is lovely, as is the coastal drive (or cycle) to Carmel. The Aquarium was somewhat disappointing and very overpriced inside. The small Art museum is worth a short visit. The dedicated, car free trail for pedestrians and cyclists is a nice idea.

Monterey is a great place to spend a few days.
Monterey is a great place to spend a few days. There is a lot to see and once you learn the one ways streets it is easy to get around. The wharf is fine, Cannery row is a tourist spot but it is fun and the aquarium is great. Food is very good in Monterey and Carmel.

Cannery Row is a bit of a tourist trap, but if you head away from the beach you quickly access the restaurants of Lighthouse Avenue, including Hula - Hawaian food. If I had my time again, I would have tried to stay nearer to the Acquariam, even as far west as Pacific Grove (technically the next town along), near the delights of Happy Girl Kitchen.

I love the ocean.
I love the ocean. There are just so many great little beaches to visit. Monterey has so much Sea life too. We saw harbor seals, otters, elephant seals, too late for the Monarch Butterflys, tons of birds, just from the walking paths! We actually walked from Monterey to Pacific Grove. There are also loads of shops, and restaurants.
The standout aspect of the Portola hotel and spa is definitely the pool and the fact that they allow dogs.. I felt like the location was a big bonus because you weren't in the middle of cannery row and you weren't out in the hinterlands like some of the other hotels in Monterey. The porters and most of the hotel staff are very nice. The lobby is lovely though they could have Happier music playing. It's weird to check into a hotel and they're playing wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot!
Would not recommend booking this place. We drove to this place all the way from SF and to our surprise they overbooked and just said they send us massage. They did not cancel the booking and did not bother actually getting in contact with us. The manager was arrogant and did not care that we drove 3 hours and don’t have place to stay (our paid booking at their hotel was still confirmed). In the end they found room at different hotel for us but kept the money even tho it was much cheaper.
Although the property is in Old Monterey, a busy area, the hotel is quiet. The rooms seem to be secluded from the hustle and bustles of cars, people.
The atmosphere is peaceful, quiet and private.
We stayed in a king standard room for 2 nights and decided to stay in the one available suite for
an extra night
Walking distance to the triple D restaurant, old town, historical museums, shopping and Monterey’s Old Fisherman’s Wharf! A little Over a mile to cannery row.
The location of the Clement, on Cannery Row, next to the Monterey Aquarium, could not be better for practically anything you would want to do in the area. Well within walking distance of great eats and great sights. The hotel itself is modern with all the amenities (except spa/gym was unavailable due to COVID), well maintained and clean. Off-site parking was steep at $35/night, but within easy walking distance and unlimited in/out privileges.
The hotel is directly on the beach and the location cannot be beat! You can request firewood and s'mores supplies and build a bon fire directly on the beach - fire must be extinguished by 10 (I think). Beautiful ocean views, listened to the surf all night long. The lights of Monterey are beautiful at night. Seems like a safe location.
The lobby was lively right around sunset with people gathered having drinks. Gave it a fun vibe.
The property of the hotel is big, clean and looking good. We were greeted and helped by very friendly staff. The room was larger than expected and everything was clean and looked up to date. The hotel is within walking distance of good restaurants and the fisherman's wharf. They offer free parking and good WiFi. We enjoyed our night here and recommend this hotel to anyone who's visiting Monterey!
Our stay at Casa Munras was better than we expected! We loved the location (very easy to get to the main Monterey strip). Rooms were very cute and clean. Close to coffee shops, lunch spots, gas, etc. It also has a charging station for electric cars which was great. Hotel staff was super friendly!
I would recommend Casa Munras!
Read reviews only after booking Hotel Pacific and was a little worried abt the hotel room and some of the not-quite-good reviews.
Upon checking in, we are quite pleased with the cleanliness of the room and the size was good for our family of 4.
Bed & restroom are clean, Breakfast was decent with bacon & bread/pastry.
The room was lovely and the furnishings were comfortable. Likewise, the interior courtyard space of the hotel was spacious and inviting. The property was easy to drive to and was a short drive to the Cannery Row section of Monterey. Parking was plentiful and easy to drive in and out.
The location and bed were so comfortable. It was easy to get to where we wanted to go. Room service for breakfast was on time and delicious. I loved how quiet the hotel was. The staff were all so friendly! I have found my gem in Monterey!
We liked the fact Pacific Inn was pet friendly and reasonable driving distance to all the main attractions which interested us. The hotel room does have a mini fridge and microwave. Fairly quiet.
Convenience. Walk to Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row Shops and Eateries. Fireplace in room is warm and cozy. Microwave in room is also handy for instant food.
