I'd been to Castro several times, but this was my first during high season, and I'd advise travelers that unless you like sitting in backed-up traffic ('taco') for long stretches, just avoid Castro from mid-January to late February, when trying to drive from anywhere north of Castro to anywhere south of Castro can take hours. November-December are great, however, and I'm told March is the best month of all. By and large, Chiloé's charms are not to be found in the cities.

Castro is a really charming and very laid back place despite being the largest town on the island of Chiloe. It's a wonderful place to chill out, and there is some beautiful countryside in the vicinity. Next time when I go back, I'd like to rent a bike and explore the countryside more leisurely (this time I had a car).

I had long heard of how lovely Chiloe is and now I know why!
I had long heard of how lovely Chiloe is and now I know why! Castro was charming, a nice mix of history and local culture. The municipal museum was informative, the UNESCO heritage churches were really interesting, the palafitos--houses on stilts along the waterfront--were very colorful. The weather can be quite variable--I had two sunny, nice days and three rainy cold ones--so travelers need to bring a variety of clothing choices. Well worth a visit!

The famous church is way better looking on the inside.
The famous church is way better looking on the inside. Not much going on in the town itself, but a pleasant stop on the way, or base for other day trips. Highly recommend Nórdica Cafe for empanadas and sandwiches!
After a long day, it was very pleasant to be welcomed by such a friendly staff with such energy. The rooms were perfect for what we needed with super comfortable beds.
As every other review says, the breakfast is fantastic, the homemade bread and marmalade were delicious! With a superb view to enjoy it from.
To note:
There is a communal kitchen area for potential simple cooking and a terrace to enjoy the view.
Finally, I was able to do well-needed laundry in the evening and have it back early morning. Superb!
This is a superb hotel. I had a single room for the price of a dorm. Its very clean. Pablo who runs the hotel was great. When I arrived they were doing a free bbq and I was invited to join - with wine included. Everyone was very warm and friendly despite my lack of Spanish. They don't do the bbq every day, I think I got lucky. but even without the bbq I will return because there was such a good atmosphere. The free breakfast was great too.
The room was very comfortable. The whole inside of the location is very warm and inviting. Very nice staff. Great location - literally one block from the southern end of the main street (Ruta 5). Good breakfast. Also a good restaurant for dinner - certainly the best we found, out of the couple we searched out and tried. If we ever return to Castro, this is where we'll stay.
Our host Andres was friendly and eager to share his vast knowledge of Chiloé. Every place he recommended was as he predicted it — like having a personal travel planner! I cannot thank him enough. … The cabin is in a lovely setting on the water’s edge, far enough off the highway out of town to provide a restful sleep.
Very friendly host with flexibility towards check-in and check-out times, she really made you feel at home immediately. Shared kitchen with all necessary appliances, and very clean shared bathrooms. We absolutely enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend this place as a base for exploring Chiloé!
this is a great little hotel to really experience Castro. it is located right on the water and you can sit in the common area or on one of the decks and watch the boats the birds and the fishers. The hosts are friendly and helpful with recommendations for restaurants and sites. Breakfast is good.
It was great staying at one of the famous palafitos in Castro - everything was perfect. Top front row to the river, well equipment, clean, a lot of space, beautiful bathroom, TV with Netflix etc., not far away from center, nice and helpful staff (also speaking English).
The location was spectacular in the woods with an amazing view. The house was beautiful and comfortable. Don Santiago went out of his way to make us feel welcome and comfortable. He even showed us around the area where there is a lake.
The house was so quaint and comfortable. The check in experience was so easy, and my host gave great recommendations. It was very fun to be staying in a palafito in Castro! She even let me borrow a raincoat, because I didn't have one.
The customer at Hotel De Castro was excellent. The location of the property was perfect and within walking distance of downtown and shopping. Check in was smooth . Thank you for the great service and will certainly stay here again.
Brilliant view and location in Castro. Several restaurants/cafes within walking distance.
Parking was a real bonus (pre-book) - management were very helpful as we didn’t prebook prior and sorted us out promptly.
Very clean.
It is the nicest cabana we have stayed in Chiloe! There is a wonderful view. You can walk down to the water. The cabana is comfortable. We love seeing the rising sun and rising moon that reflects off the water.
Very cool property amongst the stilt houses for which Chiloe is famous. Great interior design, nice restaurant on top floor, great views and easy access to the town of Castro. We loved it.
Slick and tidy hotel with rather big rooms, comfy bed, fast internet and good breakfast. Car park has limited capacity though, so its a good idea to arrive early.
The owners were very friendly and made me feel welcome. The room was clean and bed was comfy. Great location close to the centre of Castro. Nice breakfast
